[TWC] 8300 DVR HD external drive turned off?

I tried to add an external hard drive (Western Digital 1 TB) to the 8300 HD DVR. The DVR will not allow me to add the external hard drive. I called TWC and told me to call Scientific Atlanta. Scientific Atlanta told me to call back TWC since they indicated that TWC has turned off the esata port so an external hard drive can't be added.

The instructions on the TWC site indicates it can be added. How does one correct this situation?

What version of guide software is the box running?

External hard drives work with some, but not with most guides.

TWC has disabled the eSATA ports. Those of you that have them activated are lucky. TWC didn't mean to do it.

Been going back and forth with them on this for a long time. Probably going to get a TIVO. Can't get DTV because I'm up against a hill. Don't quite trust U-Verse yet.

I am surprised that TWC gives you the instructions to add an external hard drive from their website.

Depends on what software you have. It USED to work, but since they rolled out their own software, TW Navigator (which imho sucks compared to Passport, but is better then SARA), they have once again disabled the eSATA ports.... or at the very least the software is not ready for it yet.

Have you tried calling that they should really update their website? :D

Navigator does work with eSATA. Only the 8300HD's work with it and not the HDC boxes.

When I spoke with TWC, technical customer service support, they informed me that they turned the esata port off. The reason they gave was copyright infringement on movies and television shows.

Never been a fan of someone else controlling the hardware that's in my own house. Change is hard. This eSATA things drives me nuts. If I'm away on business and there are a few movies I want DiVRed while I'm away, the skimpy box won't handle it.

This week, I'm having some roof work done. I'm having an OTA antenna put up while they're there. Even with cheap rabbit ears in the house I get higer quality uncompressed pictures than with TW - and it's free!

Once that's done, it's TIVO time. If it weren't for the Daily Show and TCM, I'd probably deep 6 TWC all together.

I have an original 8300HD, and my external HD still works after the software updates.

I guess you are one of fortunate few. SA even told me on the phone that TWC's last update made the esata port inoperable.

Yup. Works fine. One reason I still have TWC instead FiOS for my TV service.

AFAIK, the original 8300HD is the only box that it works on.

What is the purpose of even having the e-sata port if it is not operation? Also, why doesn't Time Warner remove this option from the instructions if it won't work?

Verizon does the same thing. Their esata ports are turned off on their DVRs too.

AFAIK, the Motorola 6xxx and 7xxx series DVR's have disabled esata ports.

If I bought a TIVO, how would I make it compatible with TWC in my area? What would I have to do to get the same features for recording on my 8300 HD DVR?

Get a CableCard from TWC. And a Tuning Adapter if you have SDV, also from TWC.

Oh, two CableCards and two Tuning Adapters are needed I think if you want to use dual tuners.

On the HD and HD XL models you only need 1 Cable Card and a Tuning adapter. The Cisco TA will do both tuners. TWC uses M-Cards which allows you to have 2 tuners with 1 card.
