A question about where to setup QoS

On Sunday, I received an incoming call while I was watching a HD movie online. I had no problems to hear the other end. But the other end could only heard couple word here, there, not the entire conversation. I had no any problems if I didn't watch the movie.

I believe I should do the QoS. Here is my setup:
DSL modem -> Linksys WRT54GS -> Linksys PAP2-NA, as you can see the phone adapter is behind my router. Both the router and phone adapter support QoS. My questions is that; where I should setup the QoS?
1) on the router
2) on the phone adapter
3) on both

As Mazillo suggested, the correct place to set up QoS is on the router.

I was tinkering with the QoS settings in Tomato today. The way it works is you first define classes. I defined a class for VoIP. I wanted it port-based, so I added port 5060. But, I also had to enter in a range of RTP ports - check the SIP tab on your PAP2 to find what these are.

Once I had the class set up, it was just a matter of allocating bandwidth to each class. Keeping in mind that G.711 uses about 90 kilobits per second in each direction, it was relatively simple.

To check and see if I did it right, there is an option in the Tomato menu called "View details". Here, you can see all the current connections from your network, and what classification they are. I made a VoIP call and confirmed that the classification on the details page matched the classification I had set up earlier.

Even if you're not using Tomato, the procedure will likely be similar.

I have the same router that you are using and I currently do not have QoS enabled. Even when I am downloading or watching streaming video, my calls are still fine.

The only time that I have had my callers unable to hear me is when I am uploading large files while talking on the phone. I have tried to enable QoS, but my callers still got choppy audio when I was uploading large files.

I want to try an put Tomato or DDWRT firmware on my router, but I am afraid that I will brick it (this is what happened to my old router during a firmware upgrade).

What is the brand/model of your old router that got bricked? If you had a serial console cable, chances are you can recover this device.

I really don't remember. It was really old and time for a new one anyway. I just don't want to brick my new router!

BTW, usually older (earlier version) router has more Flash/RAM capacity to run open-source firmware to host some applications.

Yes, I know. I looked into the available RAM and Flash memory before buying my router. When I saw $22.99 for my router, I just could not pass that up and could not justify spending double or triple that amount on something that had more memory (and was still only 802.11g and only 100 Mb ethernet).

I just needed something to get me by until I could find a good 802.11n router with gigabit ethernet. I am waiting until they update the routers with the finalized standard of 802.11n and not the draft.

i also find that on WRT54's i can tend to get better range and reliability with older routers. also some of the newer ones you can not replace the antennas with higher gain ones. versions 1 through 4 along with the GS and GL rock compared to the newer ones.

Since you guys started talking about firmware. My WRT54GS's Firmware is Version: v7.50.2. I went to DDWRT web site and couldn't find a higher version than v7.50.2.

Does anyone know a better one?

DD-WRT is not Linksys!

Yes. I bought the original one from Amazon with the firmware v7.20.2. It is Linksys firmware.

Which means I don't need to upgrade, right?

I believe a more appropriate question to ask you is why do you want/need to upgrade the firmware on your router?

BTW, what is the version number of your Linksys WRT54GS router?

I don't want and don't need either unless it is necessary. I typed wrong version # in previous post.

Ok. let me clarify, the Linksys WRT54GS comes with the version v7.50.2 firmware (not v7.20.2) installed. It is original one.

7.50.2 is the firmware version. I am more interested in the hardware version which is usually listed on the label at the bottom.

Thanks. I wondered what are the sizes of Flash/RAM does a Linksys WRT54GS v7 have. Can you telnet and/or login to your WRT54GS? If so, once login into the shell, can you try either df and/or free to find out the partitions and RAM sizes, respectively? I suspect this device has a built-in Flash/RAM of 2/8MB only.

Please read my post to find out. My Linksys WRT54GS v3 has been running an open-source firmware right after I bought it. So, I don't know if the Linksys stock firmware will have a feature to show the amount of Flash/RAM on your device.

Enter the model number of your router into this site and it will tell you the RAM and flash memory:

There you go. I got from crazyk4952 provided web site. The RAM is 16MB and Flash is 2MB.

looking to setup QOS settings on my router running dd-wrt software. like the poster here im looking to stop the occasional times when the other party hears me choppy. So only want to adjust the upload. Since my upload is 512Kb, this is what i am considering:

Start QoS = Enable
Port = Wan
Packet Scheduler = HTB
Uplink = 412
Downlink = 0

Then under MAC Priority i am going to enter the Mac address of my pap2 and set prioity to premium. Would that be good enough? Should i also enter anything under "Services Priority" or "Netmask Priority"?
