AT&T via HyperTerminal connection?

Okay, I know it may seem weird, but ...

Is it possible to connect to the AT&T network via a HyperTerminal (dial-up) connection and transfer a file using FTP or TELNET?

I can acheive a connection, but cannot get past the Username/Password prompt. If I enter my full email address as username it errors out; if I use only the part in front of the "@sbcglobal.net" and then enter my password I get an "Invalid username/password pair" error.

What exactly are you trying to do?

When I was on DSL, I had no problem connecting to my customers networks (over VPN and not) with Telnet and/or FTP.

This is just a request for clarification. As a DSL user, I occasionally used dialup without problem.

I think you are asking "Do U-verse users have dialup access?" or, equivalently, "Do U-verse accounts have dialup privileges?"

I don't know the answer. Since I converted my POTS line to U-verse voice, it is only an academic question for me. If U-verse is out, the phone is out anyway, so my alternative would be WiFi at a nearby Barnes and Noble (I assume we still have WiFi access).

AFAIK U-verse users get free dialup as well.

We've got an old NT Workstation box here and I need to pull a large (> 4MB) file off of it.

a) the box has a CD drive, read-only (not a burner)

b) the box has USB ports but, as you may know, MIcrosoft never added USB support to any flavor of Windows NT

c) I could use a file-splitter application to move the file onto multiple floppies, but the floppy drive in the box is shot and I was hoping to avoid finding/installing a new one.

d) No, there is no network card installed...

e) the box *does* have a modem and *is* already connected to a dedicated phone line.

f) this is a one-shot deal; pull the file then shut down the box for good and toss it in the recycling pile.

So, I figured if I could achieve a HyperTerminal connection to my personal (uverse) sbcglobal.net account, I could then FTP the file to one of our corporate FTP sites.

Using one of AT&T's local dial-up access numbers, I can obtain a connection using HyperTerminal however as I said earlier I am unable to login...

All U-verse accounts get dial up access to the AT&T local numbers.

I think the problem is the application you are trying to use.
As I recall, HyperTerminal tries to make a direct telnet / ftp / etc connection to the end point you are dialing.
Our dial equipment does not support this - it expects to set up a PPP session so it drops you.

You'd probably have more success setting up a Dial-up network connection within Windows NT, then use either Hyperterminal or the windows command line to establish a telnet or ftp session.

You need to use your primary account fully qualified username and password to access the dial service.

Is there any particular list of numbers? I am in Bellsouth-land would i use the ones from 8884DOTNET or would I use the old AT&T worldnet access numbers?

Actually any of your accounts will work for dial-up access. It doesn't have to be the primary.

I know it's a bit late, but you could've used Knoppix to transfer the file to a USB drive. I suppose you would need to have downloaded and burned an ISO, though.
