[iO] Get a better deal
Hey guys, im paying around $230 a month and i was thinking calling cablevision to threat them to cancel my account and switch to a competitor. I have a few questions about what deals could cablevision possible give to to keep me as a costumer.
Does verizon fios service availability in my area affects what kind of deal they give to a person?
What is the highest discount that cablevision has given to a person to keep as a costumer?
What do you guys recommend to me ?
Some facts:
I have been a iO costumer for 3 - 4 years.
I have all premium packages except for "OOL Ultra."
I have always pay in time.
If you guys have any question, let me know.

Re: [iO] Get a better deal
Call the CV disconnect dept and tell the Rep that you are looking around for another provider. You don't have to be in a FIOS area. You may be able to get the triple play promo for a year. I have also heard of free boost for a year. Good luck.

availability of fios will greatly improve chances of getting a good retention offer.
i've seen posts people getting(don't know if its true) triple play+free boost+free io gold+free dvr for a year.
it's also depends on your social engineering skills :)
read up how to talk to reps and how to behave to push them a bit further to get what you want :D

FIOS availability does affect it -- but --- you are almost guaranteed to get a deal if you have an appointment for FIOS installation scheduled when you call.

like the triple play offer, i love how the reps on the phone keep trying to get me to buy into me "saving money" when after the trial period is over the prices all jack up to full which is more total, than what im already paying now, lol

i'd rather have that and be open to other options when they come than satan's contract with verizon till the end of days.
calling once a year to safe $50/month is not an issue for me

Yes, CV does not treat its customers equally. People in some areas get better deals that others.
CV wouldn't give me the deal I wanted, so I disconnected.

Re: [iO] Get a better deal
A friend of mine works for cablevision as a sales person.
I know how everything works on his sales, winbacks ( getting costumers from directv, dish, fios ) triplepay sales and the commission he gets for every single sale. I asked him about the retention center and what kind of deals they can give and he says that he doesnt know anything about what kind of deals they can give. He also told me that cablevision is deploying them where fios is entering in order to keep costumers.
If you guys have any questions about what can he do and what kind of deals he can make with people, feel free to ask.

So what youre saying is the money you save for say, a year or if youre good and can squeeze a 2-year deal out of them, has no point? You can dump it any time without penalty.

When I called to disconnect, I told them what I wanted in order to keep the service and they didn't give it to me. Between then and the disconnect date, Cablevision called me back three times to try to get me to keep the service.
The best deal was the one offered during the initial call. The later offers were not as good.
I think that some of the callbacks were from the sales department. So it seems the retention department can give better deals.
So take what you can get on the first call. I really just wanted to disconnect, not make a deal, so I don't mind that they didn't give me what I asked for. I'm happy to be saving $57 a month by canceling my Cablevision service.

That's why I didn't accept their offer of 3 free boxes for 2 years. I didn't want to have to call them again, like I was at some third-world bazaar (see above photo).
I disconnected, and I'm saving almost $700 per year compared to their so-called deal. That's real money.

How were you able to save $700 a year compared to Cablevision? What service did you wind up going with that was so much cheaper for TV, internet and phone?

I called and said i was disconnecting my optimum voice. The rep told me he has a package that he can offer to me that was available on his discresiion to use.
He gave me what I have 15/2 internet, family cable with io, and optimum voice for $115 a month for 2 years. Of course I took it.
Call cablevision and find out. Just be carefull. Some smart reps will go to the fios site and see if you actually can get fios . So be carefull in your wording.

When I signed up recently (a previous FIOS internet/phone and DISH TV customer), they basically told me I could get 2 things free for 2 years with the triple play. I could choose from boost, dvr, and certain premium TV packages (I don't think io gold was among them, but didn't ask). They are also giving me a substantial discount off the regular $90 price of triple play. So in all, the deal I'm getting is close to what you mentioned; however, regular price of io gold is $96/month, so I suppose getting that for free is an even better deal, if you really care about having 6 billion channels.
Now, I might have been able to finagle one more freebie out of them. In fact, the representative promised me a free cable modem battery, but that was never delivered, and when I called to complain they said they just plain don't give them out. I decided it's not worth my time to hassle with them about it, since I'm pretty happy with what I have. (There were some initial internet problems that took a few days to resolve, and aside from slow upload speeds, things work almost as well as advertised.)

Verizon DSL + POTS for $54 per month. That's cheaper Cablevision's price of $85/month for Internet plus phone (no TV).
The $700/year I'm saving is by not having any pay TV service at all. That's the amount I would have been giving CV for a measly 45 channels. It's not worth spending $700/year for 45 channels, so I pulled the plug.
EDIT: The $57/month I'm saving by not having TV pays for my daughter's school lunch. So we're talking about real money.

If you have been a great paying customer for years, they will help.....at least that is my experience. I have had Silver and boost for years with a DVR. I called the rep and was brutally honest, told her att is in the area but really did not want leave cablevision, and asked what could she do to help me stay. She appreciated my honesty and gave me dvr free, upgraded me to Gold and took off about $25 from my bill for 2 years (the dvr freebie is only for 1 year)

But that's not a fair comparison to say that you are saving $700/year by not going with Cablevision. You are also saving money each month by NOT going with DirectTV or FIOS or DISH.
Anyone can save money each month by cancelling their service, but that has nothing to do with Cablevision.

I'm glad you have an infinite amount of money. Unfortunately, Cablevision thinks we're all as rich as Dolan (who gets his TV for free anyway).
The best thing about canceling my CV TV service is I'm no longer bombarded by those annoying Optimum ads!

Re: [iO] Get a better deal
My family have been with Cablevision since 1980 and I decided to call them yesterday to see what kind of deal they would offer me since Fios is available in my area (central Jersey). Without much hesitation the person I spoke to reduced my bill from $160 to $130 a month for the next two years with no changes to my level of service. I currently have iO Silver, OOL (basic) and Optimum Voice, so the $30 a month difference is a huge help.
After debating with the rep about the evil of FIOS for the next 20 minutes, I was able to get two months free of DVR service. I asked for DVR service for free for a year but he said they currently do not have that promotion. Even if I get hooked on the DVR (this is our first DVR), I'll still be paying $20 less than I was before and I'll have a DVR.

Re: [iO] Get a better deal
Has anyone had any luck with a deal even without the tv portion of fios being available? I want to switch but its not worth it unless I get all of their services since the phone has tax, but I'd like to try and get my cable bill down for now. Also, should I just call and ask for retentions, or is there a cancel menu option or something?

Bobcat @ 7th Nov 07:16PM:
Re: [iO] Get a better deal
The retention dept never asked who I was switching to. I guess they assumed Fios. But their deal (3 free boxes for 2 years) was not acceptable to me, so I canceled.
There are touch-tone menus to cancel, which gets you to the retention dept.

Re: [iO] Get a better deal
I have the Triple Plan with iO Silver, 2 DVRs and another 2 non-DVR boxes and am paying $194.75/mo.
I just called up and they offered me an extra $15 discount on OOL and $5 discount on OV for 24 months.
Maybe I could have gotten a couple boxes free for a few months too, but I took it.
I'm happy that they extended this to me for 24 months.
Of course, I'm giving $5 or so right back due to the rate increase that's coming along.
Debating whether it's worth the $12 to downgrade from Silver to Family. For the 3-4 times a month (at most) that we watch HBO/Starz, it's probably not even worth it.
But, with the new changes, if I give up HBO now, it'll cost me a lot to ever get it back since it's on Gold now.

If you have the Triple Play (I am confused, you say "triple" but I don't know if it's just all three or the actual triple play), you're price should not go up. I had Triple Play last year, and last December when the rate increase came, my bill stayed the same. When I called them earlier this year and told them I was going to DirecTV, they gave me the triple play for a second year, however the price was $4 more to reflect the adjusted pricing.
If you don't have the actual triple play, your price may still remain the same. After all, you are on a promotion, so technically, I don't believe it should change.
I have until May to figure out how to get them to lower the price for a third year, however I have just been made aware that Verizon is negotiating to install FIOS in our condo, so I am guessing that I will be able to get them to give me a really good retention deal. Hopefully FIOS is available here by May 2010...
