[ Mobile] Bell Plans way over the edge!!!
I am very upset with both Bell and Telus!!! They are really setting the stage to profit big on your usage!! The average bandwidth available for ANY devices is 500MB of data.
And now with HSPA (3G+) is launched that is going to change things? I say not!!! Its going to bring huge profits to wireless carriers with overage usage! Once people realize what they can do with the speed, that will allow for overage caps to spill over FASTER which brings more PROFITS faster to those sick mobile providers!
Well I am in Newfoundland using VERIZON.. Why would I want to pay $100 for 1 gig of data and 300 minutes of air time when I can pay $116 US and get unlimited data (blackberry) and 1300 minutes US and CANADA wide INCLUDING long distance?
Its a no brainer folks. If you want the service, contact Verizon wireless they will hook you up. You don't need to be living in any areas in the states to have their phone services.
You will however have to get a US phone number which was no big deal for me. If you wanna reach me bad enough, call me and pay BIG time!
Enough is enough with the garbage networks in Canada STEALING your hard earned money!!! Woo Hoo HSPA, who gives a SQUAT about your new pre-launched OVER PRICED services!!!
I will say this, to those who sign up.. WARNING:
Your signing a 3 year JAIL SENTENCE when you sign up with these canadian carriers. If you want out of a contact in the states, its $190 buck and it drops by 10 bucks per month for each month you have used. in Canada.. its $20 per month of a contract you have LEFT!
Ok, your 50% through a contract with bell.. hmm I want to switch to Telus... how much will it cost me? $360 bucks!!! and your HALF WAY THROUGH!! More than paid for your stupid phone! HELLO! Your better off paying the $450 outright price average for your phone and ditching the contracts... Then you have flexibility to switch if you have to, but you will have to purchase another phone..
I think the attempt by WINDS mobile was to set the industry on edge, which I think Koodo Mobile started to do with the introduction to the "TAB" purchasing program. Its kinda a way to mask the "Contract" and introduce a new mind game attempt to "NO CONTRACT" buys, and "NO SYSTEM ACCESS FEE".
Come on, its incorporated in the price already silly.
And you know that tab, if you take it, at least if you use the phone 10% of your monthly bill is deducted from that TAB, sort like the US carriers, but the fee is not as ugly if your 12 months in and you want to cancel. The most you'll pay is $125 bucks!!
And they have features like unlimited inbound calling, 5 friends nationwide calling, unlimited long distance ect.
At least if your going to pay $80-$100 bucks per month for a phone, you get some value out of it!! But $100 bucks per month with bell and 300 minutes? Go F yourself Bell!
So I hope that people don't just drop everything for that stupid I phone cause I predict the worst launch in history coming tomorrow. It will set the flow in how the CRTC is going to look at bell in the future!!!
STOP THE PRESS!! I just got word that Bell is delaying the launch because they just launched HSPA.. WHAT? What the hell does that have to do with anything.. SEE there is a flaw in their systems already. Buyer be warned. Those little bandwidth hogs will eat your wallet and then sum, if not wreck your credit score!!!
Good luck fellow mobile ites!!

I'm not really against what you're saying entirely but Rogers in particular examined usage on their top data plan promo (6 GB) and found that 95% actually used less than 1 GB of data for the 2 months they sampled usage. If we want it to change we have to use more data. Bell/Telus is simply matching the market.

My Bold is extremely efficient with data. I do a ton of browsing on it every month and barely hit 1GB.

I think your doc needs to up the dosage!
Seriously; if you don't like it - raise a billion bucks, and launch your own cell carrier... You can set usage and rates as you see fit.
The problem with Canada, is there's just so damn much of it... It's expensive, to provide coverage to so few people, across such a wide area. Economics dictate that profitable areas (GTA, Montreal, etc) with high density and good RoI, have to subsidize areas with lesser RoI...

Once you get past the drama, yes, there is some interesting information.

And you also need to cover less-dense areas to make a mobile phone service attractive to consumers. Hence why the current players have a roaming mandate with the new carriers.
I wouldn't a find a cellphone as convenient if it didn't work nationwide in most travel corridors and all cities, although I've only been to the two no HSPA provinces of MB and SK about twice in my life.

Re: [ Mobile] Bell Plans way over the edge!!!
I don't necessarily disagree with the general theme of the post, but there are some possible issues:
1) While I can't speak to Bell or Telus, Rogers (or at least Fido) does not require a data plan with smartphones. My friend has a regular simple Fido plan on his iPhone (no data), while I have CityFido and the 6GB data promo.
2) Bell sells 1GB for $30, much like Fido/Rogers.
3) The Verizon plans that you mention are no longer available. The newer replacements have no data included, and it's also not clear if Canadian roaming is included or extra.
4) The ETF on the 3-year contracts aren't much different than not signing a contract and getting the phone at a discount. Example: My 3-year iPhone contract came with a $500 discount and has a $500 ETF...
5) Assuming a $500 ETF on a 36-month contract, $20/mth left breaks even at 22 months and is then cheaper. It's worse early in the contract, but better later:
1 month: $490/$500
21 month: $290/$300
22 month: $280/$280
23 month: $270/$260
35 months $150/$20
6) FYI, Koodo is Telus, and pretty much all carriers have the features you attribute to them.
7) Bell has made no announcement that they're delaying any sort of launch, and Telus has already committed to launch the iPhone tomorrow. Both Telus and Bell use the same HSPA+ network as they each co-funded it.
I do generally agree with your overall point, though, we're getting screwed.

Rogers does now also require a data plan for subsidized smartphone handsets. No exceptions.

Note the "subsidized" part there. That's an exception right there, if you pay for the device, you don't need a data plan. I believe that my friend got his 3G subsidized before that requirement was changed, but you can still do it if you'd like. The $699 price ($500 extra) of the iPhone is cheaper than three years of $25/mth data plans ($900 extra). You're saving $400 by not getting a data plan.

Re: [ Mobile] Bell Plans way over the edge!!!
Verizon has a plan that is $79 or $110 family plan for us canadian calling and is still the current plan, and you can purchase the data side from that which includes unlimited north american blackberry data. The $79/$110 plan is 1300 minutes per month which includes long distance and roaming in north america!! :-)
edit:
here is the link its called Nationwide plus Canada:
and the plan starts at $59.99 with 450 minutes, I only know of the $79 which when I signed back when was 1350 mins so the plan changed slightly
»www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/stor···typeId=8
And Global Blackberry (which includes Canada), is unlimited and $65.00 (*some countries listed are 250 mb usage.., canada is unlimited)
When I got my plan it was $49 for north american, and yes that plan no longer is in effect, so I am grandfathered with that.. Still its a much better deal than dealing with Bell Crapbility.

Re: [ Mobile] Bell Plans way over the edge!!!
Nationwide Plus Canada reportedly does not include Canadian roaming (can't use the phone in Canada without paying fees), and does not include data (the international BlackBerry plan is $65/mth extra).
So you're now talking a minimum of $60 + $65 = $125 per month to get 45 minutes and data, but you still have to pay hefty per-minute roaming charges.
With your grandfathered plan, it's doable, but it's completely unfeasible now with current plans.

Like some other guy said the delay by Bell is probably so tell can get some sort of throttle in place. I'll guess this throttle might be more stringent than the throttle on dsl.

Where did you see the data options? I only see the USA/Canada plans here which are way cheaper than Bell:

But where's the unlimited data option?

Re: [ Mobile] Bell Plans way over the edge!!!
The big problem with Canadian mobile plans right now is that it's impossible to get a good plan without signing a 3-year contract. Many carriers have VERY FEW no-contact (month-to-month) plans, and most of them are rather undesirable (think 40-50$ month for not many features).
The ONLY way to get a reasonable plan in Canada is to takeover someone else's retention plan, or wait for a half-decent plan to come out and sell the phone you get from the subsidy (Iphone 3GS, instant 400$ profit)
If you span out 400$ over 18 months you'll "save" nearly 20$ a month on your plan.
After 18 months or so you'll have had opportunities to complain to Loyalty & Rentention to throw in some goodies into your plan and make it even more worthwhile.
Eventually you hopefully end up with a decent price plan. It's a lot of cat & mouse, but hey, when you time it JUST right, it's possible to get something that resembles vaguely a US plan.

Huh? Few plans require a contract. The contract is just for a discount on the phone. If you're willing to pay full price, I believe nearly any plan from any Canadian carrier is available without a contract.

Nope. Fido I think is the exception but every other carrier requires a contract for most plans. I think Rogers only has a few now that are available on month to month.

Nope, almost all plans from Bell are available without contract. The only exceptions are special, limited time offer plans and employee purchase plans. Every one of their standard lineup can be had in 30 day, 1, 2, or 3 year varieties.

I still think Rogers is the better side for now. I wish we didnt have three years contracts here, cut it down to 2years.
