[Connectivity] What wireless router to use with Extreme 50? Help

So Comcast suggests the WNR3500 for the extreme 50 service. Ive got that router and when im on wireless I barely get 15 down. When im connected directly to the router I get 45-50 down. Am I doing something wrong here? Are there any other settings I need for the router? Ive searched everywhere on here, but there doesnt seem to be any clear answers...please help.

Re: [Connectivity] What wireless router to use with Extreme 50?

Have you ever tried a different wireless channel in the router ? Is the wireless signal strength good ? Is the adapter far away from the router ? Are there many walls, ceilings, or obstructions in between ? Is it a steel building ? Is the wireless adapter in your computer an "N" capable one ? Are there any wireless devices/telephones that are 2.4Ghz in your home ?

Re: [Connectivity] What wireless router to use with Extreme 50?

At first it was set to 6,10 and then I moved it too 7,11. On the router itself it gives me options to choose. One is up to 54, up to 145 and up to 300. I chose the up to 300 option and it only allows me to choose multiple channels. For instance, 6,10 7,11 etc etc. The wireless signal was really good. My laptop does have an N card in it. no other wireless devices other than cell phones.

When I logged into the router it said it was up to date. I even called Comcast and they said the WNR3500 is what they use. I may as well keep my WRT54G router hooked up because im getting the same speeds...LOL I dont understand what could be the problem. I figured a wireless N router would do the trick, according to Comcast.

Re: [Connectivity] What wireless router to use with Extreme 50?

I've found for a real speed bump with the 3700, you need to be on the 5Ghz band. Then again, I live in apartments surrounded by an ultra-crowded 2.4GHz spectrum (142 access points visible to kismet. Only 1 in 5Ghz which is mine).

Up to 54 is g only, up to 145 is g/n and up to 300 is n only. My 2.4ghz AP is set to 145; the 5ghz to 300. The Macbook flies and the iphone still connects at g speed. Of course if your laptopbook doesn't work in the 5ghz band it is kinda moot.

I only got DS3 last Monday so I image I'm still limited to 16/2 at the cable modem but using iperf, can easily push 50-60 Mbs from laptop to laptop over wireless.

Re: [Connectivity] What wireless router to use with Extreme 50?

talking about the 3700 I find that the Traffic meter is not that accurate, which is the main reason I upgrade to this router from TrendNET TEW 633 GR which work fine for about 2 years. And the wireless signal seems to be not as good as the TrendNET. My wireless g network cam keep dropping connections.

I am trying to configure the TrendNET to work as a repeater, but it keep me problems when trying to change the DHCP to the same as Netgear. It fail to connect.

Re: [Connectivity] What wireless router to use with Extreme 50?

So I found my "other" wireless USB stick and I tried it. For a brief moment I was pulling in 30 down on wireless. This was set on up to 145Mb and auto channel. I tried a few more times and it dropped down too 13 down. The moment I plugged in the ethernet I was getting 52 down. This is very frustrating because it defeats the purpose of wireless and defeats the purpose of having the 50/10 Extreme package.

You absolutely will want to use an N router with gigibit wan (internet) port. If you want I can send you the link to a modem I've tested with your exact service for this exact purpose and had amazing results.

Also the others are correct in you requiring an N adapter on your wireless devices (unless built in) if you want to see the best performance.

Cisco.

I used to have the Ambit when they haven't capped it. After about 2 months, they've capped it and I was never going above 30Mbps on every speedtest I did. I decided to just try the Cisco and there you go. I only have ultra but the powerboost is pretty high as you can see. ;)

I actually did this on an early Saturday morning. Usually it's around 40-70Mbps during peak hours.

I upgraded from the Linksys wrt54g v3 to the dlink dir-655 and I saw a nice improvement in my performance both on wireless and wired. Its nice to know that in the next few years as the speeds increase in our area that I'll be in good shape.

Besides, I'm in a docsis 3.0 area and I'm loving this from my 22mb connection.

I figured a wireless N router would do the trick, according to Comcast.
Comcast also uses two other Linksys gigabit wireless-N routers with their Blast! and higher services: the WRT-310N/320N (the WRT-310N was the original choice; now, the lower-end option is the 320N) and the WRT-610N (the only wireless choice for Ultra and Extreme 50 subs in the Beltway Region). Both also include wired gigabit; the 310/320N is non-simultaneous dual-band, while the 610N is simultaneous dual-band. Both routers are N-ratified (in other words, ready for the final N standard). If your *adapter* does not support dual-band N (and some adapters don't support simultaneous dual-band, which is mandatory for maximum performance), that may be the weak link. If your router supports dual-band N, make sure your N adapters do also; otherwise, you'll only get half (or less) of the performance N is capable of. (If you have no N adapters in your LAN at all, but do have gigabit wired devices, then you can safely consider an N-wireless/gigabit-wired router such as the Linksys WRT-320N or re-certified WRT-310N.)

Re: [Connectivity] What wireless router to use with Extreme 50?

PGHammer, I thought about the whole "dual band" N adapter. My laptop has N built in, but its not dual band. Same goes for my USB N adapter. I was actually thinking about purchasing a dual band router and adapter to see if that fixes the issue. I was looking at the WRT-610N and the Netgear WNR3700. Thanks for your input.

Mike Wolf - Please do send the link. Im curious to see what you have...

Re: [Connectivity] What wireless router to use with Extreme 50?

Why simultaneous dual-band N is critical - simultaneous dual-band N is like full-duplex for wired Ethernet; it lets you send while receiving (extremely useful for multitasking Internet applications, such as p2p, IM, e-mail, Web browsers, etc.), and simultaneous dual-band routers (such as the WRT-6xxN routers) won't get their best performance without adapters that also support dual-band at once. Single-band and non-simultaneous dual-band routers will, at best, perform only half as well, and in the case of low-band-only N routers, as little as a quarter as well as their simultaneous relatives (no better than wireless-G).

In a word - ouch!

Well hata28, I picked up the router you own today (Netgear WNDR 3700) and at the moment I am having issues connecting my wireless clients to it. It is taking a long time to connect and when it does it is giving me the "limited or no connectivity" message. I have entered the passphrase correctly and everything.

Any thoughts?

Edit: I updated the firmware to V1.0.4. once I got things set up. Also, it seems to just be the passphrase that isnt working. The key (1,2,3, or 4) itself is working. =/

Dual-band means that you can choose whether to use the 2.4GHz band or the 5GHz band.

Simultaneous dual-band means that you can use both bands at the same time.

I have the WRT610N router with which I use the 2.4GHz band for all my "G" devices while using the 5GHz band for my "N" devices.

Also, an adapter has nothing to do with the "Simultaneous dual-band" feature. These routers work with any "B", "G", "N" or "A" device.
