How to get best Internet deal? Order online, call or chat?

I need to order Comcast Internet for my mother's house in Woodbury, MN. She doesn't need super fast Internet speed, so we were thinking we'd order her the deal that's going on right now for 15Mbps services for $20 month for six months, and then it goes up to $43 per month, at which time we'd probably switch over to the Economy Internet service for $25/month.

I've seen on some web site forums that some people (in other areas of the country) had luck getting that $20/month deal for 12 months, instead of 6 months using Comcast's chat feature on their site. However, when we tried it, they wouldn't give us anything better than the 6 month deal.

Also if you order online on Comcast's site, if you order online, they charge a connection/setup fee, which we were trying to avoid. Do they charge this fee no matter how you order, even if you order by phone?

Also, I've seen even better deals for Comcast through third party sites, like www.comcastoffers.com, where they claim to give you the $20/month rate for 6 months, as well as a free modem and up to $100 cash back. But I'm not sure I trust these third party sites. Are they legit?

If anyone has advice for how to get the best deal on Internet, when you already have TV service, and how to get it for the longest period of time and keep the setup fees as low as possible, please let me know! Thanks for your help!

In the past I have used "Authorized Reseller" sites/offers.

I have gotten $ back, free modem and router. Only caveat, must follow the rebate terms and forms to a "T". Miss a date - out of luck on the rebate.

Over the years - have gone through Comcast twice and an Authorized Reseller twice - moved a couple of times.

As to an "Authorized Seller" make sure they have a working 800 number and a physical address. And that you can access the proper forms to get the rebates.

One benefit I have found is the time of hookup - calling Comcast, I have had hookup the next day.

Reseller- a week to 10 days for them to get info to Comcast and the Hardware for a Self-Install to you.

Shop around and timing can be key - There are Promos all the time and they change quite frequently from Comcast and Resellers.

I just moved back into an area where Comcast was available [only DSL or Dialup at old addy] and they charged a $25.00 hookup fee. But they came out and made sure all runs were up to specifications, provisioned the TV Boxes and the Internet [let them use an old crappy machine to Install their software and later removed it.]

I got the best price (I think from the internet direct from comcast) Free install (HSI only) 28.00 a month including cable modem rental for 12 months.

Thanks, Hortnut, for the good tips on buying through a reseller.

WestDC, I wish I could get the 12 month deal, but it must be specific to certain areas.
