I just upgraded to fiber
during the router setup I was asked to install the "Bell Internet Service Adviser"
what is this thing and does it keep records of ports ect and send them to monkeys?
aka sympatico spyware type thing?

Corrected (unless you actually have a fibre cable running into the modem).

According to Bell:
Service Advisor provides a seamless setup of all your Bell Internet tools such as Security and Internet Check-up. After setup, it will also provide you with important service alerts to help you keep your service up to date and running smoothly.

Unless you feel it offers some value to you, I would uninstall it. It includes a tool for checking to see if you are connected to the internet. I feel that the target audience is for former AOL users, if you catch my drift.

If you have time on your hands and want to investigate it further you could run a packet recorder (i.e. wireshark) and record what the program does for an hour or so. It probably just pings your gateway and modem just to check if you have a connection to the net.

I have the same service. During the setup I also got the prompt to install their software, but I just skipped that step. The setup process still completed successfully.

Bell knows what you're doing anyway, thru the wonders of DPI. The other crapware they shove on you is just icing on the cake.
