20/5 40/5 60/10 New Speeds Announced for Docsis 3.0
Has RCN announced what new speeds they will offer with the docsis 3.0 upgrade?
Thanks

RCN will leverage the Cisco(R) DOCSIS 3.0 downstream channel bonding solution that includes the Cisco(R) uBR10012 cable modem termination systems (CMTS) and Cisco DPC3000 Channel Bonded Cable Modems. The new services will offer peak data rates of 20 Mbps downstream/5 Mbps upstream, 40 Mbps downstream/5 Mbps upstream and 60 Mbps downstream/10 Mbps upstream. Pricing will allow for one to two year commitments ranging from $59.99 to $199.99.

Re: New Speeds Announced for Docsis 3.0?
While this is great news, I will say it again - This will fail unless they can support it, I see a lot of people complaining that they can't saturate their 20Mbps line (only getting 10-12) during peak hours as it is. So no way this will fly.
But, I am curious about the 40/5 package.... I wouldn't pay more then $100/month for it. But I am liking this so far.

at least in NY my 20/2 connection regularly achieves its advertised numbers, sometimes slightly above, so I don't know if thats really an issue..

The DOCSIS 3.0 upgrade should address this issue. There should be more than enough bandwidth to support it.
I've had docsis 3.0 service from Comcast, and the speeds were consistent with the 50/10 package.
The biggest difference most people will notice is the increased ability to upload.

I don't have any issues, I normally get 21 down, I was just posting what I have seen.
Wonder what the 40/5 package will cost?

Not sure, but I just called and had my 20/2 plan switched to $49.99 a month, change took place right away - saw it on the RCN account page.
So call now and get it switched to a lower price, I also saved my parents $30 a month for the same bundle)

I'm a little unclear about something here. If I already have the 10Mbps/800Kbps service from RCN, will I see any increase in speed or decrease in price from this new announcement? Or are they simply introducing additional tiers of service above what they already offer, for a higher price?

Plans with far greater speeds will be rolled out (first for small businesses, then for consumers) but you can bet existing plans will also be reconfigured at some point. You should always be able to keep your current plan but it may be beneficial to switch to a new one, depending on what is announced.

Is this deal listed anywhere on RCN web page and is there a description of the 3.0 plans for Chicago?

I think this will be the first time in over 10 years that I will stick with the lowest tier. I rarely see my speeds over 10mb so what's the point

My 20/2 is actually 16/2 or 80% of what thy claim
At this rate
40/5=32/5
60/10=48/10

I always get at least 20/2 so the plans for the new speeds will be something to keep an eye on.

I too get a constant 20/2 at all times, even during peak hours. I'm curious as to the new speeds too. I might bump on one to 40/5.
cdr1000, every post you do man is negative. If you read the fine print on RCN's website, it always stated "speeds up to 20MB/s Down." There may be times you hit the 20 down without knowing it. Cheer up a little bit, if you don't feel your getting that speed, bump down to the 10/768Kb package :)

Guess I'm not a cheerleader?
Price for regular gas differs from price for premium.
You are paying a specific price for for a specific item.
Same should be applicable to RCN service.
If they can not deliver, I'd like to get some money back.
Well, RCN bill is in USD, RCN technical support is outsourced to Philippines. However, RCN management is not.

I'm not too hopeful they will deliver these speeds either. I'm in the same boat as cdr1000. I pay a premium price for 20/2 service and I rarely ever break 12-13Mb anymore. At any time. This was not the case about 1.5 yrs ago. I used to pull 20Mb easily. WTH happened? I just did a speed test before posting and rocked a blazing fast 6.5 Mb on my 20 Mb pipe. :uhh:

Would it be logical to assume if the price range is $60 to $200, then the middle tier will cost around $130/month? Just speculating here.

I think RCN does a good job. From 6pm-12am it's reasonable to expect slower speeds.
If you keep complaining, they could implement metered billing, caps, throttling, and all that other ugly stuff Comcast does.
Is that what you want?

Whenever they are mucking around with their system, the speeds are inconsistent. They are now doing crush, DOCSIS 3.0, and who knows what else.
But I just had a slow upload problem that was caused by my router, not RCN. When I plugged my PC directly into the cable modem, the upload was OK again. I had to manually set the WAN port of the router to 100 Mbps rather than "auto-select" to solve the problem. So it could be a lot of things.

Ah no, but I'm not gonna just sit back and suck it up when I don't get what I paid for. It's an issue with the service that needs to be addressed for over a yr now. If DOCSIS 3 fixes a ton of it, then great. But if they can't get people those speeds 95% of the time even with DOCSIS 3, then we'll be complaining.
I been through ALL the trouble shooting. It's not on my end. I've had calls with RCN and they have seen my slow speeds and said they would correct the issue. Nothing has changed.

I always get at least 20/2 but my area has competition with Verizon and Comcast for customers. As a result, I may be one of just a few RCN customers on my block.

I just called and tried to have my bill lowered for my 20/2 service. She stated this is only for New Customers for a 12 month period and only for Cable Modem service only, not bundled packages.
So if 20/5 is going to be $60, why am I paying $85 for 20/2?
