Re: Pittsburgh: Guide Update 11/10

This sounds like the update before the guide feature update.

I don't think it's "all" settings that are being reset.

There is some more info here.

excerpted from the site for those who don't make the jump ...

Comcast is updating the Digital Cable On-Screen Program Guide in many of our markets.
This update will improve performance and pave the way for new features, but may impact the saved settings of your On-Screen Programming Guide. A message will be sent to your cable set-top box’s message center with the date of this update.

After the update has been completed, you may need to reset some of your personal settings, including:

Parental Control Locks by Channel
Scheduled DVR Recordings
Program Reminders
Favorite Lists

Important Notes:
The actual date of the system updates will vary depending on your location.
If you do not use the four features listed above, you do not have to take any action.
If you do use these features on any of the channels listed below, please reset your personal settings after the update in your market has been completed. Only the channels listed below will be impacted; settings on other channels will not be affected.

List of channels impacted at the link above...

so this won't give us the new features of a28?

Re: Pittsburgh: Guide Update 11/10

It changes the source id of certain channels to a standard number that will eventually work with web based dvr scheduling and other potentially nice features (prompt if HD channel is available, etc...)

Think of the Source ID as part of a table of contents in a book.

In a book the chapter number is the channel number.
In a book the chapter title is the channel label (ie, HBO-E).
In a book the page number listed for the chapter is the source ID

Go to that page in the book ie) source ID, and it lists everything you need to know to tune the channel. Frequency, video PID, audio PID, qam modulation type, forward error correction, and much more.

Some of these changes are needed to take advantage of A28's new features. So this is step 1. A28 will come shortly thereafter.

The good news is that the after step one comes A28, as cypherstream points out. So you appear to be closer to getting A28 than most.

Re: Pittsburgh: Guide Update 11/10

A28 guide deployment is scheduled to start on 11/10 and will continue through 11/12. There is so much equipment to be updated that it is being spread over 3 days based on model. The source IDs will all be updated on 11/10 which is why everyone will lose parental controls, etc, on affected channels. New iTV applications are launching 11/12 and I think the myDVR online DVR manager is supposed to be available 11/13.

just to clarify --- customers will lose "parental control by channel" settings IF they have that specific feature enabled AND if it is one of the channels on the list.

This is SCHEDULED, not PROMISED dates of activity. The source ID changes on 11/10 can be delayed for any number of reasons pushing other scheduled activities back. This is also a "regional" schedule and each "local" system may need to delay if needed.

I got that message too a couple weeks ago but not the update. My area was supposed be switched to all digital as well. Some cities around here were apparently switched but not mine.

Anything happen for you guys? I woke up to a red light message. Hoping it was a notice for this upcoming change, I turned on the TV and checked. To my utter disappointment, it was for some lame boxing crap. I can't install Anti-SPAM protection on the cable box ether because it's all closed source.

Today is the remapping of all channels to an internal Comcast source ID. This may or may not be limited to Corliss Street with a few restarts/updates downline. It is unlikely your guide version will change today. If all goes well, a FUTURE guide update will be released. Rumors put this FUTURE guide update to be as soon as 11/10/2009 and as late as 12/31/2010, with an 11/12/2009 date being most probable.

Sorry if this is mentioned elsewhere, but saw the "Guide Update" post and it seemed to fit so...

I don't know about you, but I've had the update for a almost two days now and I have to say, my DVR is actually usable again. It had previously grown to be so sluggish that the push a button and wait was definitely the norm on almost every push. Maybe it will degrade over time, but the old Moto is actually responsive again. Thank goodness.

Turn to the ESPN standard definition channel. Is there a Watch In HD button on the lower left on the program info bar? Then press OK/Select on your remote.

Re: Pittsburgh: Guide Update 11/10

Does the screen saver fill the whole screen yet on HD channels? I think only the PACE RNG-110 can do that, but did they get it working on the Motorola?

Is the guide centered correctly? On A25 it's slightly to the left a bit. If I zoom in to 4:3 wide mode and bring up a menu, about an inch of video peeks through the right side. The video alignment doesn't fix the overlay either. That adjustment only aligns text, which screws things up graphically and also disables the scaled video.

I'm curious if the overlay system was worked on a bit, as it had a few problems. Also when picking a VOD title, the Comcast logo would invert and the guide graphics would glitch. Also when returning from a VOD "Preview" the VOD menu's would be distorted.

Ok, I have the HD button on several of the SD channels. Not all yet. Which is nice saves time hunting for the HD channel number.
After seeing the boxes doing the d/l the last 2 nights and nothing different, it was looking like a waste for me. I don't have a DVR model. DCT6200

Re: Pittsburgh: Guide Update 11/10

I believe that Watch In Hd button is program specific so it may not be there all the time on all channels. Only when there is an HD program that matches the SD program. I know those overnight infomercials aren't in HD!

On ESPN and CNN it's all HD all the time.

No, it is hit & miss with the Watch in HD button.
Just doubled checked with the 3 main local stations. Only the one has it WPXI/NBC Today Show. The other 2 don't. They are showing HD programs in HD WTAE/ABC Regis & Kathy, KDKA/CBS Local broadcast morning show.

Re: Pittsburgh: Guide Update 11/10

Oh, so it's triggered on guide data? I thought that the release, along with the new source ID mapping added a column in the channel map table that pointed the SD channel to the location of the HD channel. If this field is populated it would display the proper button along with the correct back link to it.

IE if it were a csv format, and this is extremely simplified:

vct,freq,qam,pid,sourceid,hd-refrence
6,549,256,4,20060,231
231,747,256,1,30161,,

Re: Pittsburgh: Guide Update 11/10

So do the menu's just 'pop' on and off screen still, or did the Passport guys that joined the team add Passport style slides, fade in's / fade out's yet? I know the DVR's can handle this. SA NON-DVR's can handle this, and non dvr's are less powerful.

I'd like to see the mini-guide, mini icon menu, and info bars 'slide' up from the bottom of the screen. Like when using an IPhone application, everything 'slides' into place. Heck like using Passport. These guys were Aptiv and all converged into this 'Rovi' team, so we know they have the brains to make this happen.

Based on how I have seen it work, I think it also checks another field for a match - the program ID. If the program ID matches and the sourec ID's correspond, then the Watch In HD button displays.

That is supposed to be a feature...now you don't have to guess when the show comes back on, just hit play when you see it.
