Few Questions

I'm moving from Vancouver, BC to Vaughan, ON (above Toronto) by the end of the month.

I had cable in Vancouver with Shaw and its much better than Telus (for me at least), but I heard that both Rogers and Bell suck big time in the East, so I decided to go with TSI. The current plan of 5M/800K is fine for my needs.

Here are few questions I'm wondering about:

1. How is the latency for online gaming?
2. Does it matter if the service uses PPPOE for online gaming? Does it affect latency in a negative/positive way?
3. If I'm to sign up for the phone service as well, do I have to have Bell install the number first? Or can TSI do it all from scratch? (Note: I currently have no Toronto/Vaughan area code number).

Thank you

Can I get you to post in this forum please with your postal code and address so I can see what services will be available to you.

To answer your questions:

1) EXCELLENT!

2) PPPoE does add about 30 to 35 ms in latency because of authentication. But over-all it will be ok, I have no problems and I am a hardcore gamer.

3) You'll want us to do your phone, we can do a fresh install and assign you a new number...it takes a min. of 10-12 business days for the phone and we would attempt to do the DSL the same day as the phone. But the DSL can take an extra 5 business days from when the phone line is active for the DSL to kick in.

Re: Few Questions

To get a quick approximation of speeds available to you, you could check Bell's website »bell.ca/shopping/PrsShpInt_NewAc···Type=NEW and enter your street address for a listing of Bell products in the area. If 'performance' is available for you, chances are that 5M/.800 with Teksavvy will be available as well.

Also you can check the members map on this website and see if there are any members 1-2km away from you getting acceptable speeds: »/gmaps/dslr

I wouldn't worry about ping if your line is in good shape. I know it hasn't even been installed yet, so this hopefully a good thing in your case. You have less wear and tear on the thing :) You should be able to expect anywhere around 20-35ms pings to Toronto servers, but I've found pings are VERY consistent with Teksavvy.

Aww too late, I already posted :p

Maybe you can get the Timbits and we can have a slumber LAN party?

I'll bring a router, some towers and a couple sweet monitors :D

Say what?!?!?!

PPPoE does not, IMO, add /any/ measurable time to "latency" (though it does add a second or two to the initial router *bootup*-time).

Back when I lived downtown (using PPPoE and a DSL-login acct) I got ping times of 6 or 7ms to www.google.com - so there's no 30-35ms being added.

To the OP's questions#2:
PPPoE makes no (detectable) diff to online gaming latency times. None, naughta, zero, zilch.

James, methinks you misunderstood the question (or were speaking to a worst-case scenario where someone is on an INTERLEAVED connection ... but that [increase in latencies due to INTERLEAVED] would effect not just PPPoE but all traffic on that pipe)?!?!?!

Re: Few Questions

That is correct about having slighter higher ping times on interleaved. When I was on fastpath I was getting 6ms to 15ms on google or teksavvy servers. However on interleaved I get an average or 40. That difference probably doesn't affect gaming that much.

My question is, who and how is it determined if you will be on the fastpath or inter profile? And can the user request for a change?

once you get you DSL hooked up, just post your line stats and people will help you out. And yes you can ask to be switched to fastpath if your on interleave if you line can handle it.

Re: Few Questions

Thanx so much for the replies. really appreciated.

The postal code is L4H 0T5. its on Retreat Blvd in Vaughan. Some of the nearby houses are still under development, but several houses are built and occupied. So, its relatively newish area.

I still would like u to check the postal code please :)

Thank you.

Re: Few Questions

Also, can you tell from the postal code if my line would be on fastpath or not? or do I have to wait to get a local phone number first?

Thnx again

Whether you're put on fastpath or interleave is determined by the length and 'health' of your phone line. The databases for speed are fairly inaccurate already, so there's no hope in finding a database which lists fastpath/interleave along with locations.

The longer your line (~3-4km+) the more likely it is you'll have to be put on interleave or settle for a lower profile.
