Hello, I have cogeco internet in Brockville, ontario
basically this is my problem.
pinging google.....

Ping statistics for 74.125.95.147:
Packets: Sent = 115, Received = 84, Lost = 31 (26% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 33ms, Maximum = 57ms, Average = 39ms

Its not my computers (windows and linux boxes), router is bypassed etc. What can I do? I tried calling tech support but the dude I talked to didn't even know what packetloss was. I have worked phone tech support at a call center before as well so I know the phone techs are not actual techs and they probably cant even escalate something like this.

I have in the past experienced packet loss problems in Cobourg. It was explained to me by a tech who seemed quite knowledgeable that increased packet loss at peak periods is often a result of an overloaded node (although I realize there are lots of other reasons why packet loss can happen). And sure enough, the problems seem to have disappeared. My node was scheduled for a split in July/August so I am betting the split took place and solved the problem.

Having said that, I have also had problems with Linksys WRT54g routers experiencing more packet loss on Cogeco than other routers. I use a DLink at the moment in Cobourg, but if I go back to one of my old Linksys models (I have two) packet loss increases considerably. Yet if I use the same WRT54g routers in another network (in Brazil, where I am at the moment) they don't seem to experience the same problem. Makes no sense to me, but I can attest to the fact that it's all true.
