Slow speeds for the past 2 weeks
I don't know why but for the past 2 weeks my internet has been slower than it should be. Before I used to get ~2.5Mb down, now I can barely get 1.7. What is up with the decrease in speed? I don't recall any changes that could have caused this. (Teksavvy customer for 1.5 months).
Tell me what info to post as I don't know what's needed.

Line statistics. If you have a SpeedTouch ST516 modem, you can access the line statistics using DSL Modem Tool (DMT) v7.35 --> »dmt.mhilfe.de/
If you're using a different modem, you can find a number of different versions of the program to suit many different modems. Just look down the page and see if your modem is listed there anywhere.
Are you having trouble with ping as well? Or is it just that your maximum download speed isn't what it should be? Are you noticing any other slow-downs like browsing troubles or lag spikes?

Re: Slow speeds for the past 2 weeks
Yes I have that modem, but how do I access it if I have it in bridged mode and is behind (or in front of?) the router?
My ping is fine (pingtest.net says B, and I don't notice much lag in games). Download speed it the only problem.
One thing I forgot to mention is that my upload is actually up 50% (from 0.4Mb to 0.6) for some reason.

Re: Slow speeds for the past 2 weeks
I don't trust pingtest.net. I have near perfect line, yet every time I run it, it gives me a result an unbelivable packet loss rate of 96%. It only does this for the first time I use each server and if i click on "test again", it will always give me a grade of A.
You could always use the modem in full routed mode so that you can view the stats without interrupting your connection. I feel that using modems in bridge mode is overrated.

But doesn't routed mean it acts as a router? I'd like to use my own router. And even if I do do it, how would I access it (as in ip)?

you could use your external router's automatic dhcp configuration mode. Anything that passes through your modem will be distrubuted throughout your network (similar to a cable modem setup that is going through your own router).

Re: Slow speeds for the past 2 weeks
If you're using a router with Tomato/MLPPP, or you know how to add an ip forward for your modem through your router, you can access the modem while it's in bridged mode without worrying about the modem's firewall blocking you.

lol if you think thats bad for the past 2 months ive been having packet loss first bell decides to up my upload to 800kps and that didnt solve my issue so now for the past 2 days my connection is officialy 1.5mbs download 600kps upload thats right. And the bell tech was supposed to come today and decided not to come into my house but test outside and said everything is fine and i accepted the speeds.
Yes we should definetely give them mooore money because their lines are clogged. Seriously....

I use dd-wrt and just found this: »www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Ac···guration
I'll try it sometime tomorrow - need my sleep now.

It's not a matter of the modem's firewall blocking the user out. When the modem is in bridge mode, the modem has no active firewall. The issues lies in the fact that the modem is not assigned an IP address when in bridge mode.
An IP address must be assigned to the modem before connectiing to by Telenet through something such as DMT 7.35.
While it might be true about Tomato having an option to assign the modem's IP address while still handling the PPPoE connection, Tomato firmware is not the norm. Most people do not mess around with different firmwares, and really, we have no idea what type of router the OP has.
Assuming a more standard firmware version on the router, DMT 7.35 can be used to connect to the modem if the router is placed into static IP mode and manually assigned the IP, subnet, and default gateway. However doing this will make the internet unsuable during this time while using some modems and firmware versions.
People will argue that the reasons for placing the modem in bridge mode are to avoid problems and conflicts with the router and to make the connectin simpler. However, to get your line stats with a Speedtouch 516 and your router, it is actually simpler to have your modem in full routed mode.

Are you sure about that? I thought my modem was in bridged mode (router establishes connection). The modem doesn't get an external (WAN) IP address, but it still has an internal IP address (two actually) at which you can access it... The default internal IP addresses for the ST516v6 are 192.168.1.254 as well as 10.0.0.138.
I use 10.0.0.138 to access my ST516 while the connection is up and running. That's how I collect my statistics through the router.

It is true that the modem still maintains it's 192.168.1.254 address, even in bridge mode. However, with most routers, the 192.168.1.254 modem address is not visible when using the normal PPPoE mode of the external router, nor is it accessible through the router unless the external router is made aware of it. As the modem does not have it's IP address mapped through the router in this configuration, you can't connect to the modem (unless of course you manually assign the IP address, default gateway, and subnet) because the modem won't even have an IP address within the network at this point.
As I was saying before, the vast majority of internet/router users do not use Tomato firmwares. While there may be an advanced routing methods to assign static routes even when a non-tomato based external router is in PPPoE mode, these methods are not enabled by default. It can be easier to just use the modem in full mode and the router in automatic mode for simplcity's sake.
I'm not denying that if configured properly, you can use a router in PPPoE connection mode and connect to a modem's interface even if it is in bridge mode. I am only saying that for many users, there's no need to play around with these settings and automatic configurations will do just fine. In fact, having the modem to bridge mode can actually cause problems if he/she does not know how to get back into the modem's configuration page without hitting the factory reset swtich with a pin on the back of the unit. Unless the user has a specific reason to be swtiching to bridge mode, why not just leave things as they were intended to be used by the Speedtouch manufacturer?

Okay, I accept your explanation about that being the easiest way to do things. That clears it up for me :)

Yes, ask to be set to 4032/800 or at the very least 3008/800 Kbps. Your speeds are lower than before because someone at Bell messed with your speed profile setting, possibly accidently or possibly because of a previous trouble ticket. Your profile is set much lower than it has to be.
As for the upload speed increase, you might have been previously set to 3008/512 Kbps.
