I can neither reach their site nor do I get the new version via the internal updater. What gives?

Now I can reach their site. Strange. Don't know what was going on. However, I'm still wondering why their internal updater didn't tell me that there's a new version available. Hm... Anyway, I installed the new version successfully. Thanks again, Lisa. :)

If you use a host file it will prevent you from going to thier website and using the update feature in the program. This is what happens to me every time there is an update for Foxit reader.
Edit: I use hostsman and have to turn it off when i update Foxit reader.

You're right, Mark. However, I disabled my HOSTS file before I tried to reach their site. No luck. Anyway, it seems to work now. Do you happen why their site is blocked by a HOSTS file? Is there anything wrong with it?

Not sure why it was added to hosts files. Checking it off doesn't help me so this is why i have to shut down hostsman.

There's no need to check it off, Mark. Just add it to the Exclusion List (see pic above)

That question was being looked into last month, see:

It's in the HOSTS both with and without the 'www.' zone prefix. Uncheck both.

Unfortunately file from ZIP archive is not portable. It adds a lot of new entries into registry. See the list here.
I've downloaded zip file (4,658,602 bytes) and executed the file Foxit Reader.exe (9,262,536 bytes, CRC 8783DE13, v.3.1.3.1030).

For whatever reason, the fact that there is a portable copy of the Foxit Reader seems to be a secret.
It is not mentioned on either the Foxit download page, the Foxit overview page or at download.com.
To get the portable version, simply download the "ZIP Package" from Foxit Software.
This downloads a Zip file consisting of a single file, FoxitReader.exe.
Same as I always get

Re: [Free] Foxit PDF Reader 3.1.3.1030
This is an old article (May 2008).
AFAIK the last portable version was 3.0.2009.1817. For its configuration it used local FoxitReader_Preferences.ini file (as portable versions suppose to) and not computer registry.
Search for latest portable versions yields some ambiguous results. I can see different packages containing different files pretending to be a portable version of FoxitReader ver.3 1 3. I guess some of them are not real and may contain an "extra" stuff, which nobody would want to see on his computer...

Re: [Free] Foxit PDF Reader 3.1.3.1030
Eh. My fault. I suggested, and others have as well, the settings be per-user, because non-admins can't write to the FoxitReader_Preferences.ini while it's in Program Files. Vista/7 may virtualize the write so that non-admins writes are done in the user's profile, but I always disable file & registry virtualization and MS has said it shouldn't be depended on for correct operation.
You can always ask to make a true portable version.

Re: [Free] Foxit PDF Reader 3.1.3.1030
Yes, this is correct. Users in Vista/W7 can't simply write to Program Files folder. But a portable application is not supposed to be there in a first place. Users need portable applications:
1. to run anywhere from small storage devices (USB drive, CD/DVD, floppy, etc.)
2. to run it from any other places on a local storage. For example, I keep all portable utilities on drive D:. This way I may easily reinstall OS without a hassle to install all of them back again. Moreover, I make access to portable applications via toolbars that I keep in the drive D: too. It means that after re-installing OS the only thing I have to do is to add those toolbars in taskbar (or make them as a sidebar) and that's it. All of them "are installed" and ready to be used again immediately...
With portable applications there is no need to install anything. There is no clogged registry, that may require to run cleanup tools time to time. Because all settings are in one place - you may easily remove that file and all default settings will be restored or it's easy to completely remove the application without a need to clean your registry after that... Or it's easy to move configuration from one computer to another.
Due to those advantages (as well as many others) that portable applications have over programs that require installation I'd prefer that _all_ applications on my computers were portable. So adding one more to the set of portable utilities is always attractive to me.
That's why I'll keep the old version of FoxIt (3.0.2009.1817) as my tool, and will simply wait for a new official version that is portable before I'll update it.
