Speed dropping from modem to router
I am getting a speed of roughly 2.4mbps when I connect my computer directly with the modem. However, with a wireless router, the B/W drops substantially and my page loads are extremely slow. I also recently upgraded to the latest ST 516 firmware but that didn't help. I am not sure what settings I can change at the router level to speed up the Internet connection. I have a netgear WGR614 54MBPS and the speed does not improve eventhough I am sitting next to it.
Can someone help.

OK I am not sure what you mean by personal info. I am with Primus.
Are you saying you want my name/tel #?
Please clarify.

Re: Speed dropping from modem to router
I bought a WGR614 v5 years ago at a used computer parts place for $10 just for the heck of it. I realised right away why it was on the discount table. It's a piece of junk, no offense...
Try updating the firmware and do a quick search for compatibility problems with your wireless devices.
Make sure encryption is on, try some different wireless channels.
Check if you have 2.4Ghz phones or other equipment that could be interfering with it.
Try a different router, if possible. You'll probably notice that another router performs much better. Mine won't even hold the signal without dropping out every few minutes if I start transferring any substantial amount of data through it.
It even makes a poor doorstop/paper weight because it's so light. I'm not sure why I have mine in the house anymore, even if it's just taking up storage space :p
I currently use a WRT54GS v1.1, which performs well for my needs.

^It did perform decently when I was with BELL but for some reason it I think does not like the PPPOE connection.

Re: Speed dropping from modem to router
How's the speed when you connect to the router through a wire?
Why not use your modem in routed mode and let the modem handle the PPPoE connection then?

Re: Speed dropping from modem to router
Routers with the stock firmware often make the Internet slower. I used to have three cheap routers that aren't compatible with DD-WRT, OpenWRT, Tomato, etc. and browsing was slow, WLAN connection was unstable and the routers all rebooted often. I bought an Asus WL-520gU, which already has a much better firmware to start with, and then replaced it with DD-WRT. Guess what: my average download speeds went from about 2300 kbps to 4300 kbps. DD-WRT was replaced with Oleg's firmware recently, as the USB support is much better, but it's still as fast as before.
So far, I've been able to improve connection speeds in many households just by switching the router firmware to DD-WRT.

Yes. This appears to have done the trick. Changed the modem setting from bridge to routd, vpi/vci=0.35, and supplied the username/password at the modem level.
I then disabled the username/password setting from the router.
Now I am almost getting the same speed as I did when directly connected.
Thanks for your help

Any idea where I can get the DD-WRT for my NETGEAR as my search tells me it is not supported for WGR614 v4?
thanks.

Re: Speed dropping from modem to router
DD-WRT is not supported on your router... so the only choice you have is to keep the stock firmware.

Re: Speed dropping from modem to router
Yes I've looked for custom firmware for that thing, but I never could find any. It has a tiny amount of flash memory as far as I can remember and a non-linux chip, so there's very little probability of finding any alternative firmware versions.

Re: Speed dropping from modem to router
Should I then invest in an another router. Can I buy an N router that is backwards compatible to b/g and expect a speed gain.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Speed dropping from modem to router
No just get a good G router.
Get something like a linksys wrt54gl and flash it with tomato or dd-wrt.
Also dont use the same channel as others in you can pick up.
Avoid 6 at all costss

Re: Speed dropping from modem to router
If you don't want to use MLPPP to bypass throttling, get an N router. I can recommend the new D-Link line of products, especially the DIR-655. It's expensive most places, but if you can find it for $100 or less, it's a great deal and will serve you well while handling almost anything you can throw at it.
The WRT54Gv1-4 are great for Tomato/MLPPP. They're decent units that can handle a moderate amount of traffic, in Canadian broadband terms.
The Asus WL-520gu supports Tomato/MLPPP as well and can often be found cheaper than the Linksys, with almost identical technical specifications, if you're interested in that avenue.

When i think that you'd spend 100+ $ on an external router
and resist for weeks my idea to spend 6 $ on a ferrite core!

OK I picked up this router today and flashed it with the latest tomato firmware. I changed the configuration of Multi-link PPP to single link. However, I am not seeing any speed gain. Also, eventhough I increased the transmit power to 70, the signal I pickup in another room is weak which lowers the Internet speed.
Any suggestions?

Re: Speed dropping from modem to router
If you're using a single antenna, raising the power beyond a certain level can actually hurt you at the router end. The TX power spills over in the duplexer, and desensitizes the RX, and you effectively reduce the router receive sensitivity. More troubles!
If you have 2 antennas on the router, they will likely be side by side, and the same problem occurs. The only way 2 antennas will allow better tx/rx separation is if they're positioned one above the other.
Take a look at the construction and what the RF signals have to pass through. The amount of attenuation of some of the materials will surprise you. The E-coatings on my windows effectively make a Faraday cage, and I cannot access my router outside (total under 30 feet distance).

edit: Even if the router drops you down to 10-15MBits/sec, it will be unlikely you'll notice much difference, when you consider what your profile is.

for MLPPP you need to pay for it... it's a 4$ option with Teksavvy...
and when MLPPP is enabled on your account, your username name will change.
and when you say in another room, what do you mean exactly? is this on the same floor? do you have a concrete or some sort of metal separation between your computer and your router?
for my WRT54GL router in the basement, when I leave all settings to default value, the signal is very low on the second floor, first floor is ok and basement is excellent.
I also have an enterprise grade wireless access point installed near my WRT54GL router... signal is excellent anywhere in my house...

Re: Speed dropping from modem to router
I have played around with the position of the router in my house and settled on a spot where the signal is decent enough.
However, I was wondering if since I bought the router WTR56GL only yesterday if I can further the tune the configuration settings to improve the connection speed.
A link describing optimum settings using tomato would be nice.

Re: Speed dropping from modem to router
Actually I am with Primus so does that mean MLPPP would not work in my case?
When I run a speed test, I am getting 2.85/.700 mbps with a wired connection with Primus. Can I get it any better than that by tuning my WTR56GL router.
I live in 3 bedroom apt. so same floor. When I work in the living room, a wall separated my netbook and the router.
Can I make use of my old wireless router in some way?

Re: Speed dropping from modem to router
I don't think that MLPPP is available on Primus...
we need your modem stats to see if you could get a better speed... it seems that you may be on a 3008/800 profile... depending of your modem stats, you may be able to get more speed.

Re: Speed dropping from modem to router
So if assuming I am on the 3000/800 profile what would be suggestion in regards to improving my speed? Is there any change I can make at the router level? Realistically speaking can I get more than 2.8 mbps with Primus because of all that throttling that is going on.

Re: Speed dropping from modem to router
first you need to look at your modem stats to see if they are good enough to support a better sync speed... if yes, call primus.
or you could simply call primus right away and see if they could help you getting better speed.
they only way to get a better speed when your profile is set to 3008/800 is to call your provider...
