Yes, 33db is below what we consider the acceptable value of 35db but if you're not experiencing any service issues I would leave it be for the time being.

for the 20 seconds you had it Well your wrong, if they just started testing D3 in his area, most likely they are letting him pull 50 down, and around 5 up. So anything above that mostly is powerboost but the steady 50/6.25mb's a second down is real. We all know speedtesting sites measure totally different.

Yes as coxtech1 has said no changes in upload speed really, there will be changes on down the road for upload, but right now they are more focus on faster download speeds, since upload bandwidth cost more.
And upload can be fully utilized unlike downstream which goes largely unused.

Is there any difference in latency (ie. VoIP) from D2 to D3 ?
Thanks,
Lonnie

If there is, it isn't by much. you might see up to 5ms difference if that at times. D3 is more about faster speeds, and less congestion during peak hours.
Edit: wth you mean latency for VOIP? Voip doesn't take shit to run, so any speed service from cox should run VOIP great.

Re: [VA] WOW!! new sb6120 modem speed
I picked up a Motorola SB6120 as well to replace an Arris D2 modem. Blue light on Motorola came on right away. Powerboost speed in Speakeasy test went from 20->32mbps downstream, so not as good as the 50mbps that bryan69u is getting. Modem stats, however, went from 37dB -8dBmV on the Arris to 34dB -12dBmV for each of the 3 channels on the Motorola. Basically, it goes below the acceptable 35dB/-12dBmV threshold during the middle of the day (seems to correlate to heat?) and then goes above the threshold at night/early morning. But I don't notice anything wrong with the connection when it's below the threshold.
What are the signs that being below the acceptable threshold is actually causing a connection issue? Does the modem downgrade the speed like DSL modems do?

Well them level are rather weak, and maybe you need to get a tech out there to look at your line, and see if a line is bad or maybe bad splitter or too many splitters.

Thanks, I suspected D3 bonding might add some latency, but 5ms is not too bad.

Re: [VA] WOW!! new sb6120 modem speed
Ira, what i meant was, I think it could be up to 5ms better, but it could work both ways. I just think on the better side since D3 is gunna use bonded channels, which means things could be accessed alittle faster being its pulling from more then one channel.

Re: [VA] WOW!! new sb6120 modem speed
bryan69u - Have you tested your non-Powerboost speeds before and after putting in the D3 modem? I found the only difference was the bigger Powerboost in the first few seconds, which mainly just generates nicer speedtest results.

Re: [VA] WOW!! new sb6120 modem speed
Just installed a SB6120 here in Falls Church. PC-to-Modem direct connection I'm seeing 53 Mbit down, 7.3 Mbit up. :D
Modem shows 3 bonded downstream channels... all with excellent power readings (0,2,2 dBmV) and good S/N (36, 38, 38 dB). Impressive.
Its a shame my older hardware firewall can't support that throughput. It tops out at about 40-45 max.

No problem im happy things are going good for you after that D3 modem upgrade. I have been patiently waiting, but also probably driving CoxTech1 crazy with questions about D3. Foreal the faster speeds are nice, but i mainly want it for the more steady speeds we will see with bonded channels. Because we all know that cable's biggest weakness with the overloads on one channel for internet.

Re: [VA] WOW!! new sb6120 modem speed
Pretty much same here. Although I'm assuming that with multiple bonded channels you would have higher reliability too. If signal goes weak or noisy on one channel, you won't lose connectivity... You may see loser speed, but the connection should be able to operate as opposed to losing sync. Of course with only one upstream channel at the moment, you're still subject to upstream signal issues. Correct me if I'm wrong on this.

Not yet. I need to bypass my router (which due to age and cpu capacity limits my throughput to about 40 Mbit) and just haven't gotten around to it yet.

The router shouldn't be a limiting factor when testing non-Powerboost speeds. Getting 40mbps non-Powerboost speeds would be quite incredible (unless you're actually on the 50mbps D3 plan).

I guess i asked the wrong question. I have been out of the loop. I have an old sb4200. Does it pay for me to get a new modem considering I live in san diego. I was following the forum and was curious if I would see any boost here at this time. thanks.....

Re: [VA] WOW!! new sb6120 modem speed
My older SB5120 was showing occasional T3 errors and some other miscellaneous management related errors/warnings.
The SB6120 has been synced since Friday night and I see no errors in the log since initialization. Signal levels seem very stable too. The SB6120, being new technology may simply be better at maintaining the connection. I am on D3, though - so I'm not sure if it would have made much difference on a D2 network.

Re: [VA] WOW!! new sb6120 modem speed
Well the 6120 should be better at handling stuff then a older D2 modem. I dunno if being on D3 means anything since your using two bonded downstream channels or not. How long did you have your 5120? Also seeing that cox has your area D3 ready its possible when they changed some of the equipment for D3, it just started problems with your 5120.

Re: [VA] WOW!! new sb6120 modem speed
Dumb question... since using a D3 modem your obviously getting above your quoted cap? Is this because they have yet to implement proper speed restrictions for the multiple bonds or are the restrictions only per bond?
I live in the noVa area and there is a 50/5mbit package that requires d3 but I'm not sure if its available to me... I'd still be interested in upgrading at some point for future compatibility as well as it looks like d3 uses AES 128bit encryption instead of the 56bit DES that d2 uses?
thanks.

I've been using the SB5120 for over 4 years - shortly after I got Cox HSI service.

Re: [VA] WOW!! new sb6120 modem speed
Well being 4 years old, the modem could of been on its last leg, because that normal for a modem going bad, errors, with sync dropouts. But that isn't to say the new equipment cox is using for D3 is what cause this problem also. So now you got the 6120, you should be good for another 4-5years. Its hard to pin point this kind of issue.

Re: [VA] WOW!! new sb6120 modem speed
I think the SB5120 was/is fine. It always showed a handful of T3 errors a week in the log over the course of its lifespan - even with near perfect signal levels. Never considered them unusual. Had a few sync losses over the week leading up to switching in the SB6120... I suspect though that the solid week of rain and wind from the edge of the hurricane that sat over us was more to blame than the modem. Now, with the SB6120, I've seen 0 messages posted in the log since the modem booted several days ago. Its working great.

Re: [VA] WOW!! new sb6120 modem speed
My almost 3 year old modem started doing the same as my last 2 when they got to about 3 years old.....little by little they started to freeze and drop out. So, I purchased a 6120 at buy.com for $80 and made the change before it crapped out completely. I'm pleased with it but don't see any increase in speed (in the New Orleans burbs) and still only get about 10Mbps on good days. Sometimes a bit better.
I wonder if there are any tweaks out there for Windows 7 though booting to XP and Vista yield similar speeds. Guess I'll wait until the uber speeds come to town if I can afford it. Wish I could see the 13Mbps they say we're getting here.

I hear ya Beerguy... I hope they get some network upgrades to your market soon. I was blown away to see my DL hit 60 Mbps (probably speedboost enabled) when direct connected PC to modem. Unfortunately I can't get better than about 43 Mbps through my Zywall 2+ firewall/router.
