Kramer-I do not see anything. I did a hijck and only thing running was zone alarm and that was Pro which, as far as I know of, has no anti virus. Windows 7 site ok's Zone Alarm. I have e mailed Microsoft getting no real solutions. I even manually disabled Windows defender.
I am stumped. Would love to be able to use MSE!

I am running Avast and MSE right now, no performance issue, instability....
Why would you run both MSE and AVAST?
I have tried many and the one that provides the long term least hassle and decent performance has been AVAST. I fiddle and fart with lots of them on my puter, but AVAST is what I put on the rest of the house computers. MSE sounds like it may be very good also but there is a maturing cycle it probably needs to go through first.

Re: Anti Virus Program? Tried Avast-Looking For Better Program
I use to have Avast on both my systems for years and thought they were clean till I ran G-Data. G-Data cleaned them up however I have some issues as the following will highlight.
On my first system, I'm using G-Data and I think it was a mistake to buy it. If I try to play a video or audio such as one that is embedded in a web page the video/audio stutters. One of the reasons I thought I would get G-data was that it was ranked pretty high in reactive/proactive on that chart. But it comes at a price to interfere with the pc operation. When I remove G-Data security suite this stutter problem does not happen.
On my second PC I went CA security because there was no way that PC was going to happen with G-Data. But I see from the chat that software is 1/3 reactive/proactive of G-Data.
So I am stuck with both till my year is up.

I have been using Avira free. Like it better than any of the paid programs i have used. (kaspersky, nod32, Norton, Mcafee). Running it under windows 7 and the only downside is a add pops up once a day asking if i want to upgrade to the pro version.

Nah - Your first thought was correct. Your resident AV program (MSE) is jumping in and checking things before the requesting application (Malwarebytes) gets a chance to see the data. If you think about it - that's the only safe way for MSE to protect you.
If you were to load Malwarebytes' resident protection, it would probably depend on the order in which they hooked themselves into the OS.

I've been using Comodo Internet Security. It combines Anti-Virus, Firewall, and Proactive Defense (Defense+) features for free and without ads.
When you install it you can decide which features you want to use.

Are you looking for free software or just the best AV/FW in general?
IMHO, the best is Norton's Internet Security. I did use AVG and Comodo for 1 year and it was ok. That firewall takes some getting used to and you have to tweak it a bit.

A Basic firewall that just stealth's ports is not good enough.
A cheap router can do that.
A good software firewall is software specific, if you want to block software from running you can. It is all in the configuration of a Good Software Firewall.
Last I checked Windows XP or Vista or 7 has any of that other than a basic stealth port.

Re: Anti Virus Program? Tried Avast-Looking For Better Program
Back in July, the avast! folks asked us to write a testimonial. This was my contribution:
Back in the Windows 98 days, I evaluated all available FREE antivirus programs. At the time I was using a paid version of a "Name Brand" antivirus program on my two computers. At the time, I had determined that if I ever decided to use a FREE antivirus program, avast! would be the one that I would use. I put my notes away and that was it for several years.
I did continue to evaluate avast! from time to time and even joined the avast! forum in December of 2003 to keep up with how avast! was doing.
I finally installed the 2005 version of that "Name Brand" antivirus programs on my two computers but began experiencing problems- not the complaints that most people experienced - bloat and bogging down their computers but warning messages like asking me to activate the program which I had done months earlier and also a message that the program did not have a repair feature and that I should uninstall the program and reinstall. A point of interest is that the uninstall program which this company has developed is probably one of the best things they have produced in recent years.
Finally, in late 2006 I received another message telling me to uninstall and reinstall the program. When I began the install process, I received a message saying that I had attempted too many installs and must somehow show proof that I had purchased the program. I had the proof but was so sick of problems with this software that I gave up and installed avast! on my THREE computers. As a side point, I had the 2006 versions of this software which I sold on the Internet for $1.00 US. I pity the persons who bought them.
I now have 5 computers- 4 desktops and one laptop and they all have avast! installed. The desktop that I use the most has avast! Professional installed. I really didn't have to buy the Pro version since I an a hobbyist but I like the added features and also wanted to say thanks to the folks in the Czech Republic.
Needless to say, I am extremely pleased with the results I have gotten from avast! and something very drastic would have to happen before I would ever change my mind.
I think that the friends to whom I have recommended avast! would agree with me.
Thank you avast!
P.S. They never even said thank you.

Given that a new OS is in question, this might prove interesting. It's far more relevant though that there might be lock-downs inherent to the OS that need addressing.
Even now after a couple of decades, I don't have issues with a virus I didn't ask for, to solve a problem. Habits [Surfing] still account for 94% of the problem and the other 6% relate to poor email habits.
It is a little unnerving to go helta-skelta into a new OS, though and security.

For some reason I really like MSE. Hassle free and seems to work. I kind of forgot it was there until it caught something.
This is an example of how you know you've finally got the right AV on your particular system: you're happy with the interface, it catches the baddies, and you don't even notice it on your computer. :)
- The interface should be easy for
you to use.
- The AV shouldn't cause conflicts with your other software.
- The updates should be frequent and should be unnoticeable, that is, everything else shouldn't slow down when the AV is updating.
- It should be able to scan your particular email program.
- Scans should be able to handle compressed files.
- It shouldn't be resource intensive.
I don't know how it works with the free AV's, but with my NAV/NIS programs, the background scans only run when the computer is idle, so there is no impact when I am using the computer.
not only can MSE scan zips and rars
but inside installers too so much win

Well, Grail Buddy, any Antivirus and/or security product that changes the basic function or modifies any fuction of the operating system, whether permanently or temporarilly, WITHOUT GIVING THE END USER ample warning BEFORE THE PRODUCT IS USED and/or PURCHASED, is a heap of horse dung to me...and it's morally, ethically, and maybe even legally wrong to me... Period..
That's why Norton disabling's of system restore without a pre-usage warning and the DRM issue makes it horse dung. and lord knows, I tried to forgive Norton a couple of times, even due to "RandyBell's" protests in the past...

There is still a big difference between saying that the hard discs were damaged vs. a format and reinstall.
I agree that some users were effected by this but to treat it as anything more then a program glitch is ridiculous.
Anyone that uses computers should accept the fact that a program may perform improperly in which case they report the issue to the developer and either wait for a fix/patch or find something else.

Re: Anti Virus Program? Tried Avast-Looking For Better Program
Right on, Jim! I too left Norton forever when Symantec pulled the DRM crap with the 2003 version. I had Norton 2001 for two years and really liked it but that was the last version (or 2002 which as Randy said was not enough upgrade from 2001 to warrant purchase) I will use. I was right to stay away from them as look what they did with System Restore. That is arrogance and disregard for the user.
As for the "historic" aspects of our thread on Kaspersky chkdsk problems, it cannot be disputed that our thread was the reason Kaspersky was forced to its knees and forced to admit what they had been doing. That makes our thread historic. We made a REAL DIFFERENCE with that thread. It empowered Kaspersky users and WE did it. NOT members of some other Security forum. Not even members of KAV's forums where it was being discussed but Kaspersky was ignoring it and denying and ignoring and denying. We, the members of this forum, exposed that mess and that makes the thread historic and should make every member here proud to belong to this forum.
Ironically, Avira paid versions evidently have a problem with chkdsk on Windows 7. Something in those versions is apparently causing chkdsk to mark the volume as dirty and to run at every boot. But I am confident that whatever is causing this that Avira will get to the bottom of it quickly. They have done the opposite of Kaspersky and are appealing to anyone having this problem to contact via PM and get a package to download to help test and isolate the problem so they can fix it.
