[TWC] Terrible Pixelation on HD Channels in Staten Island NY
I'm about ready to give up on TWC here on Staten Island. My HD channels for the last few weeks look horrendous. The majority of them have terrible pixelation or are breaking up completely. Some look fine though. It took a week for a tech to come to my house yesterday. He replaced some wires, and put on an attenuator. It made little difference. I already have FiOS Internet and phone and pretty much only keep TWC for MSG HD. Unless someone has a solution to what's going on here, I'm going to have to turn on my FiOS TV. I tried to watch the Knicks in HD tonight, but gave up and actually watched the SD channel. Am I only the only here with this problem?

well know in 30 days from tomorrow or less whats going on with MSG HD and MSG Plus HD on Verizon . Thats all the FCC has left in their "5 Month" deal Verizon gave them on July 7 . Im keeping TWC for MSG HD Networks and NY 1 , unless Verizon gets Channel 1 (FIOS1) in NYC , and the channel 1 in HD (FIOS1 HD) and MSG HD , Im stayin with TW. I currently have the TW phone and Internet now as well, but all that could change sooner or later .

I noticed my pixleation on the Rangers game last night, and a few other games this season, but overall its been fine. I wasnt home tonight for the Knicks game. I am pushing MSG Networks to also offer MSG 2 and MSG + 2 in HD , hey MASN 2 has an HD Feed in DC, why not MSG ?

I'm going to give it to the end of the year, or until Verizon gets MSG HD or a larger capacity DVR. Whichever comes first. I'm paying over $50 more just to keep TWC, than I could be paying for Verizon's Triple Play. It's not worth it for the awful picture I have right now.

Re: [TWC] Terrible Pixelation on HD Channels in Staten Island NY
I emailed TWC to escalate these problems. See what happens, Im quite suprised at it though, its been good up until the last 2 weeks or so. I had that same problem with Versus HD when the Devils played NYR on Mon Oct 5 , that seems to be fixed now though. It could also determine the STB , IM using 2 8300 HD DVR's . If Verizon does pick up MSG HD in the next 30 days and FIOS 1 does come to SI, then I will switch, they already have Verizon Wireless. I have Sprint since March awaiting TWC Mobile thats if MSG HD doesnt make its way , and that TWC Mobile is called RR Mobile and will work through Sprint and be in NYC 2010 with Mobile voice following data , which begins Dec 1 in North Carolina.

Thanks for the email. I have an 8300HD too. They suggested I could try a newer box, but I don't think that is the problem. Besides, it's the only DVR that they haven't crippled external hard drive support. I have over 500GB of stuff saved, and I'm not about to lose it just to "try" a new box.

see wjhat they say, send back to me tyheir feedback and see what happens . Guy in the VZ Forum tells me that FIOS1 NYC is pushed back due to the budget and that a second feed to the nYC area has to be run from WRNN. I don't like the idea that FIOS1 is using WRNN and that FIOS 1 does not have their own studio. Alot of people on here state they dislike the FIOS 1 and rather have News 12 / NY 1. People are mixed as well, but majjority state of what I first said. NY 1 is also now HD on TWC, dont know if News 12 will go HD on TWC / Cablevision.

I'm not sure what serial number you refer to. The one on the DVR?
My problem is this, on some of the channels, the picture is either terrible, or breaking up. On sports channels such as ESPN HD and MSG HD, the picture looks poor, almost like stretched SD when there is no action going on. When there is action going on, the picture gets pixelated and/or starts breaking up. Among the HD channels that are the worst are: ESPN, ESPN News, All MSG, Discovery, SyFi, and a couple of others. I had a tech out Thursday, and he put an attenuator on my line which gave me very good FDC and RDC numbers. (39, 2) Unfortunately, it did nothing to improve my picture. I live in the Bay Terrace area.

Re: [TWC] Terrible Pixelation on HD Channels in Staten Island NY
A few things TWC has to do :
Enhance NY1 HD to look like CBS, NBC, FOX, WPIX, ABC .
MY 9 does not have a HD News cast.
NY1 HD and NY 1 SD look the same picture, Im not complaining about it that its bad, its just not HD Video on the News Casts / Video Feed.
FIX the Standard Definition Quality channels on the Samsung 3050 boxes and I guess the 3090 too, although its not in SI, its Samsung . The SD Quality is a blurr on all channels, SA SD Channels are much better .
FIX the Quality on MSG 2 and MSG + 2 / Overflow channels, Channels 197 and 198, Sports Extra 1 and 2, the Qulaity is worse than MSG (27) and MSG + (48) . If I am staying with TWC , the Overflow channels are a must for improvement , where its not the Problems on FIOS TV or DISH or DIRECTV I don't think. The Picture is dark, blurry , especially the main camera feed , the closeups look ok. I will find out or not If I m staying with TWC and that will determine what happens with FIOS1 and MSG HD / + HD on FIOS, they already have ONE Bill, VOIP and Staten Island CTV Channels.
I am not giving you my serial # on my boxes for personal reasons, my name is W. Burgess, Staten Island , Charleston , if you want to look at my area and my boxes. MSG HD , ESPN HD, MSG + HD, ABC HD are bad. TV Guide Channel 51 is still fuizzy as well , dont know why its like that.
Thanks

I was actually embarrassed tonight having my friends over to watch the football game. One actually asked me "what happened to my TV", the picture quality was so poor. My house used to be the place to come watch the games. I have the biggest and best TV among us. At this point, I don't know what to do. I'll have to put a Blu-ray disk on to remember what my TV used to look like. :(

If anything, it would be FiOS. I'm already wired and have internet and phone. The only things stopping me are MSG HD, and my external HD. At this point, I have to do something soon. It doesn't look like TWC is ever going to fix the problem.

As for TWC Mobile , I have Sprint already , and the partners are Sprint, Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Clearwire , Intel, Google, and Bright House Networks. Cablevision is strongly thinking of the Wireless Voice over their existing WIFI services and using T Mobile as their provider. I wonder also how FIOS 1 really is in NJ and LI . I hear mixed reviews on here, but at the same time I hear more people miss NY1 or News 12, depending on where they are

I love FiOS internet. It's much faster than when I had Road Runner. I've never had an outage either. Verizon is constantly giving me offers to turn my TV service on. Right now it's $150 cash back, and $15 a month off the price for 1 year. I would save over $50 a month if I dumped TWC for FiOS. I know their TV service is far from perfect, and their current DVR software sucks, but it can't be worse than TWC and "Navigator" right now.

I'm monitoring the Verizon Tech forums (their forum, not here) on the rollout of their new DVR firmware. It may be the deciding factor for me to finally keep my word and leave TWC for good.

When I called yesterday, I couldn't get an appointment until next week, unless I had an "all day window", which I didn't. They claim they would send an advanced tech too, because I told them the last tech here checked everything from the pole, to my house wiring. I also called Verizon today too. They are so desperate to get me to switch they offered me their "Triple Play" service with HD DVR, additional box, "Extreme HD Package", and increased internet speed (25Mbps) for around $105 + the usual Verizon BS taxes and fees, for 1 year. I pay $94 for TWC alone, and $80+ for FiOS Internet and phone. I have to be insane, but I haven't gone for it yet. My biggest fear is their small capacity DVR with crappy software. I'll have to make a move soon though. I can't live with the horrible picture quality I have now forever.

ESPN, YES was bad again last night. Is it Time Warners Issue , like is it worth the guy coming here for a few channels, or is it the network it self ? Like are these problems with the networks on other providers, FIOS, Dish, Cablevision, Comcast, DIRECTV , RCN ?

I can tell you the tech that came to my house did nothing to help the situation. It was interesting when I called tech support the other night. When I told the rep on the phone my problem was that channels such as ESPN looked terrible. Her quote was: "Is the problem "macroblocking and pixelation"? It was like she knew and it wasn't the first call she got about it. She offered no cure other than sending a tech out again though.

I cant tell you if an Advanced Tech is coming or not ? It was good that the lady knew it was macroblocking on the HD Channels , well as soon as I get news on MSG HD, MSG + HD, FIOS 1 NYC HD and SD , and the other 2 Staten Island Local PEG Channels on 33 and 38 , Im back at FIOS and Verizon Wireless. Well know any day now with MSG HD, and 2010 is FIOS 1 I am told. Staten Island CTV will have other Programming on 33 and 38 , I was told by them,. right now they have 4 on both TWC and Verizon .

As most of my latest posts show, I'm so torn and confused on what to do, I fell like not watching TV for about a month. It's gotten to the point today that I was actually on the Dish Network and Direct TV sites looking at their packages. I keep hearing all these great DVR improvement coming to FiOS, but then I see the same promises posted on message boards over a year ago. I don't know what to believe or expect right now.

I just switched yesterday, and have to tell you the picture especially on the SD is 100 % better than TWC picture.. They are close on HD picture IMO.
I thought I would miss MSG HD which is why it took me a while to switch, but the picture on my TV was pretty good. I love getting the xtra channels from Verizon.
The DVR and changing the channels are the only drawbacks, but the positives outweigh the negatives so far.

besides the hidden fees if you notice they do not tell you about that you have to pay for a cable box rental in the ad's from 6.95 to 21.95 per month
($83.00 to $263.4 peryear ) you might as well get direct tv's hd as it will be the same or less cost peryear of the rental
Basically TWC's HD Quality is as good as VHS Quality i have proof to back up my claims

I can tell you what the tech did at my house that made no difference. He replaced a cable and put new F connectors on all the others. Checked the line coming from the pole into my house, and replaced a splitter with one that has attenuation. The attenuator gave me better FDC and RDC numbers, but made no difference in picture quality.

Did they do the same things they did when they came to my house?
I was driving home on Amboy Road this afternoon, and I passed 3 large TWC bucket trucks working on the lines. I thought "maybe, just maybe" they were finally fixing their problems. But when I got home, I put ESPN on, and it's as awful as ever. :uhh:

ESPNHD is the same. The guy came, changed a bad connection and replaced other things. I don't get it, it has to be the ESPN Feed from their Truck, it cant be TWC , because other HD are fine. MSG HD and MSG + HD is good now . I will check YES HD tomorrow. ALso I willl contact ESPN this week . In June , ESPN / ABC HD problem was the network itself, not TWC. There was an article on it on how they made the Live Well HD better quality then the ABC / ESPN HD channels, so they switched. The WNBA on ESPN HD and ABC HD this Summer was fine. When I had FIOS, I had Pixelation too , and the customers who have it now speak about it, especially now with the NFL Redzone channel. my take on it its ESPN Problem , and its only the game, Sportscenter is fine . Whats the comparision ? I will be in toucjh with ESPN this week. So it has to be the Network problems and not Time Warner cable. Another Tech coming out , is nOT going to change anytihng. It is a little better, but not much of a better picture.

and if I am going to FIOS, no date is set for NY FIOS 1 for SI , nor an HD Channel I am told , no MSG HD Updates yet , who knows if and when I am going. So I am sticking it out with TWC now and will have the Mobile Data and Voice services this coming year on ONE BILL , ok yes there is no date on the Mobile yet either, but TWC already has my programming covered, with MSG HD up in the air on VZ but Mobile services on TWC are just opposite. Also I have to see how FIOS 1 is when it does come , if its not like NY 1, w/o SI News and Programming, then oh well to FIOS1. I hear alot of FIOS customers on here , that dislike FIOS1, and rather have News 12, I guess they were mislead on FIOS 1 when first told. Well see when it gets here and where I am in 2010. Maybe working on the lines , they were fixing the MSG 2 Quality , but like ESPN, its an MSG issue, I have sent a written statement to MSG Network , and still waiting for a response if i indeed get one.

billy espn hd is one of the most watched hd channels. just because YOU dont get it good does not mean its a problem with the network. there are thousands of points of failure between espn's bristol uplink and your tv. most likely the problem is isolated to your area.

Re: [TWC] Terrible Pixelation on HD Channels in Staten Island NY
I thought I was the only one. I'm here in Staten Island and the picture has been awful lately. I just got my first LCD TV 3 weeks ago and the picture was great until about 2 weeks ago.
At first I thought it might be the TV since mine only has a 60hz refresh rate, but there's too many stations that look fine for it to be the TV.
For example the other night the knicks game on MSG was great, boxing on showtime was fine and the movie Wall-E on Starz could not have looked any better. Yet most movies on HBO were macroblocking even in scenes with virtually no movement. This is why I'm pretty sure it's not my TV. Plenty of shows with lots of movement look spectacular yet others are horrible.
One of the worst is G4 which looks worse in HD than it's SD counterpart. Also the Independent Film Channel is beyond words. The movie Turistas was on the other night and it looked like a 50 year old film. Just bizarre looking colors, grainy, macroblocking etc. Yet I could flick over to a football game on the Big 10 Network and it looked spectacular.
The other reason I believe it's Time Warner and not my Tv is that I still have a 27" tube Tv in my house hooked up to a Scientific Atlanta 8300 non HD box. Lately the Standard definition stations have been pixelating. As I type this MSNBC on my tube TV is totally locked up in one big jigsaw puzzle. Also on both my HD and SD TVs whole stations just disappear for hours at a clip. The other day MSNBC HD and Telemundo HD just vanished for the whole day.
Overall, most stations in addition to the macroblocking, even in scenes with little movement, the picture just seems to be fuzzy of late. It's really annoying. I have someone coming down tomorrow. Hopefully something can be done.

Those pictures above are exactly what I've been getting on almost all my Premium movie stations, even in scenes with the slightest movement. You get the sense as you watch that the whole picture can break up at any moment.
Just wondering, to those having these problems, what refresh rate is your TV?
Mine is only 60hz but I really don't think that'e the issue, as too many things (including stuff with lots of movement) look great and my tube TV hooked up to cable is also acting nutty.

My TV can do up to 120hz. The TV is definitely not the problem. It was fine for up until a month or so ago. All my channels looks fine when no movement is going on, even ESPN. As soon as there is any movement, the backgrounds start to blur, and the terrible macroblocking begins. Last night ESPN2 looked fine, and regular ESPN was unwatchable.

The problem is now really spreading even to my standard definition stations on my tube TV. Today CNN was just a big jigsaw puzzle all day, MSNBC was locking up, as well as a number of other stations.
On my LCD TV the E Channel was totally messed up with the whole picture degrading with the slightest movement, and most of my Showtime channels were just a mess.
But the most astounding channel is Universal Sports, Channel 162. It's a standard Definition channel so I know it won't look great at on a Hi Def TV, but holy crap. The thing looks worse than the most unwatchable YouTube video.
I wish I knew just what the hell Time Warner is doing because this really is amazing how they can put out a service like this.

DISH Network does not offer YES Network, so there OFF the list, and Cablevision cannot get in SI . , or RCN Cable. never mind the Pixels on TWC, If Verizon loses the MSG HD battle. then Yes, I will be staying with TWC , and will have Mobile services , Voice and Data in 2010 . If they win, I still have to see if and what FIOS1 is like, if its nothing to do with SI, and no date yet for FIOS1, still staying with TWC. TWC has to work on the ESPN, YES HD Networks, MSG 2 , MSG + 2 PQ if I do indeed stay, and maybe just maybe they will get the NFL Network.
If I was in CV Territory, It would be the same, only difference is their Mobile Voice will be with T Mobile this coming year . So TWC is pretty much set, with FIOS still has catching up. I enjoy NY1 and its SI Programming on TWC. I wonder if the PQ is any better on FIOS with MSG overflow channels
