[Connectivity] comcast vs fios Cherry Hill NJ
I live in Cherry Hill NJ and we have Comcast, the HDTV signal gets pixellated a lot, freezes up, the sound cuts out, we have similar issues on our standard def TV, I frequently have to reset the modem as we lose the internet signal atleast 3 times a week, the phone has a background noise as well. I mention all this because we have had these issues before and now after I was in direct communication with a higher level comcast customer exec and she sent somebody out to the house, reran all the lines (including the line between my house and the line up on the pole at the street) changed my boxes out and they did "everything". My wife works from home a few days a week and she has terrible issues with her VPN connection through our internet. I am sick of this. The only thing I can think of is the actual new line from the pole swaying in the wind, can this cause this?
Does anybody live in our area and get their service from a street line on a pole? We have FIOS on our street but I have heard they have slower internet and have not heard anything amazing about their tv part either.
I am looking for opinions from those who have either system.

FiOS wins on internet speed and TV quality. Since Verizon is a phone company by trade their phone service is also of course solid.
Not sure where you heard that Verizon was slower than Comcast but it isn't. Even if Comcast has upgraded your area to DOCSIS 3, I'd take 15/5 FiOS over Blast (16/2 + PowerBoost) cable any day, and 25/15 FiOS over 22/5 Comcast Ultra without skipping a beat.
On TV quality, I'm just going by what I hear but what I hear is nothing but good things on the service quality itself.
The only issue you may run into is in regard to billing; Verizon doesn't have a good track record on that. Other than billing though you'll absolutely be 100% happy switching from Comcast to FiOS.

Sounds like it's a plant/network issue. Are your neighbors having any issues?

Re: [Connectivity] comcast vs fios Cherry Hill NJ
I had them look into this and they claim it was all me. I have several neighbors, most of whom are seniors who have either switched to FIOS or just going back to the ancient strategy of getting the local channels with an antenna! I just don't get it, I have gotten the best response while throwing a hissy fit on Twitter, they (comcast reps are tripping over each other trying to get me to email them first. They came out elevated the issue and redid all the cables and the line outside.
Since it is my most recent experience, I complained about the terrible NLCS phillies series I watched and they told me nobody else complained or had issues. I even called friends with comcast who live 10 minutes away and asked them and they had no issues. This sucked in both HD and Standard def. And my wife flips out because of the internet issue. Then I called comcast from the phone on their service and they asked me to call back from another line, they was too much background noise!

At home, go to 192.168.100.1 and give us the signal stats. If you have Comcast Digital Voice, which it appears you do, you should see something similar to this:
RF Parameters
Downstream
Freq/Power: 711.000 MHz 0 dBmV
Signal to Noise Ratio: 39 dB
Modulation: QAM256
Upstream
Freq/Power: 29.400 MHz 40 dBmV
Channel Type: DOCSIS 1.x (TDMA)
Symbol Rate: 2560 kSym/sec
Modulation: QAM16
This are your signal statistics on your modem, it would definitely help us to tell you if your cable signal is the problem.

Re: [Connectivity] comcast vs fios Cherry Hill NJ
It is interesting to me all the numbers appear within the range you mentioned. The tech read the numbers in the basement, upstairs and another room and said originally one of the numbers was "too strong" but then when he was all done said everything appeared to be good and within range.
RF Parameters
Downstream
Freq/Power: 717.000 MHz 4 dBmV
Signal to Noise Ratio: 36 dB
Modulation: QAM256
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Upstream
Freq/Power: 33.200 MHz 52 dBmV
Channel Type: DOCSIS 2.0 (ATDMA)
Symbol Rate: 5120 kSym/sec
Modulation: QAM16

Your upstream signal seems to be on the upper limit! I'd have a tech out and look at it...

Make sure you get whatever they tell you to get you to sign up in writing.
These salespeople (Charlatans) will say anything to get you to sign on the dotted line.

Re: [Connectivity] comcast vs fios Cherry Hill NJ
Verizon does not always win on internet speed or tv quality. My brother had fios internet, tv, and phone. Not only was fios slower but he had around 8 months of complete crap. he finally got fed up with his outages that he just paid the ETF and called it a day. It was a bar and i posted many times that anyone could go and compare both side by side. He had the same tvs side by side with one being verizon and one being comcast. HE also had wireless access to both networks that anyone could compare speeds. The only part that was even was the phone. Comcast won on both tv quality and internet speeds. Did i mention verizon was down for days at a time. So you had to be lucky on when you went whether you could actually try out fios for internet. Around 8 months and what he estimated to be 100 hours of phone support he gave up on his fios experiment.

Wow, looks like Verizon isn't perfect by any stretch. However *in cost cases* VZ wins oer Comcast.

Um, nope. Several ppl in our neighborhood are VERY upset about Fios' internet speed and picture quality. Techs have been out and have told one of them that VZ has been having issues.
Worse part is they're locked in to a 2-year agreement...

I'd think that you could get out of the contract if services weren't provided. Either with Verizon direct or via toher channels.

Do you know if the tech did a ingress test outside to see if there getting any "noise" in the house. Also did they check behind all the wall plates. You will be surprised how one bad fitting behind the wall plate will cause the whole house to mess up.

Wow, so much info. Thanks everybody.
I don't know what exact tests they ran. The guy used his little computer and check lines as he was rewiring across the basement, he did it in the office where the modem is attached for internet and phone, in the family room where hd is and right outside where the wires co run up for 2nd floor.
Also could a too high upstream cause major issues?

Re: [Connectivity] comcast vs fios Cherry Hill NJ
Your upstream is too high, however it's would not cause tiling on your TV.
Intermittent problems can be notoriously hard to deal with. There are a number of things that can cause these problems. Some of them are pretty weird. A faulty ground in your house, someone with a Ham Radio in your neighborhood, someone putting a lot of noise on the main line in your neighborhood, etc
Your basic CommTech probably does not have the skills or time to fix your problem. You need a Lead Tech or Supervisor to come out and give your place the once over.
Once they have determined that everything in your house looks good, they can concentrate their efforts on finding out if there is something bad with Comcast's plant.
Your problems could be from a crack in the mainline, water in the system, a bad tap plate, squirrel chew etc.
Post a request in the Comcast Direct Forums »/forum/comcastdirect
They can put in a corporate ticket which will get much more attention on a local level. Otherwise they will just keep sending low level techs out.

Wow - seriously?? LOL.
FIOS offers 25/15 internet - 133 HD channels (in the Philly region) - and these facts aren't amazing? I'm not here to be a fanboy - but you need to read up on your FIOS facts!

I am not saying I never read great things (online), I just have never had anyone tell me they were blown away in my area, I have heard people tell me their internet seemed slow. I read amazing Comcast stuff too doesn't mean everybody gets this great service.
