Folks,

I just wanted to post the apparent solution to this problem, which was originally reported HERE (the post is too old to directly update).

After multiple visits from Cablevision they finally replaced the drop to the house. It has been several months and we have had no intermittent 1-way audio during telephone conversations. In addition, the periodic break-up of video channels seems to have largely disappeared.

Upon their initial investigation Cablevision reported the signal levels into the house were excellent, however intermittent troubles in particular with Optimum Voice would still occur (in recent months the condition worsened such that the Cable Modem would even intermittently drop its connection for short periods of time (e.g., 15 seconds)). Cablevision began by replacing the modem, then the splitter that sits in front of the modem and the short inter-connect cables between splitter and modem. Nothing seemed to help until the drop wire into the house was replaced. The technician noted some corrosion on the copper center conductor of the drop wire (this actually appears as a series of black spots)
