Modem keeps resetting itself

Hello, I am having difficulties with staying online.

While I am online, either checking a forum, going to youtube, doing mundane internet task, my modem resets itself.

I have been having this problem for longer than a month. I had Called Charter and they have sent 2 service technicians to try to fix the problem, but all they did was do a modem swap (and even then they couldn't fix it and left).

My own fixes that I have tried:
Changing Cable wire
Changing Cable Outlet (Made internet a lot slower)
Changing power outlet (Worked but after a day it resets itself)

The modem I am using is a motorola surfboard SB5101.

Here are the current status of my modem.

Frequency 561000000 Hz
Signal To Noise Ratio 36.0 dB
Power Level -7.6 dBmV

Upstream Value
Channel ID 2
Frequency 28000000 Hz
Power 44.8 dBmV

Re: Modem keeps resetting itself

I am having the same issue and it only happens in the morning. Seems like there is a drain to my node around a certain time, maybe everyone around me watches TV in the morning and sucks all the power out. From what I can see in your log the power dips real low and why your modem is resetting, so try to find the time of day and ask them to monitor the modem for big power spikes.

Re: Modem keeps resetting itself

It really doesn't matter what time of the day it happens. It could happen now. It could happen around 3 and it could happen at midnight. It just happens throughout the day.

I have been home alone for the past few days just to see any difference. Nope. None whatsoever.

recommend posting in the direct forum to get assistance. Upstream power should never be as low as 8.

That is when it is restarting.

I am going to use a connection hogging program to see if it will disconnect and monitor the power.

Post in the charter direct forum. The techs in there seem to know their stuff, unlike the ones that come to your house.

Probably noise in the return signal. Is 1MB the advertised upload speed for Charter? Seems like it should be at least 2MB.

Re: Modem keeps resetting itself

I am having the same issue with all the random disconnection, and I am using the same modem as you are, SB5101 Surfboard. Even after a firmware update today, I just got a random drop within the last 4 hours upon writing this message. It doesn't drop as much when I do regular web browsing, but it drops frequently ~every 40-50 minutes when playing online games, such as Warcraft 3 and WoW. It's rather annoying to keep resetting the modem, which could take anywhere from 1-8 minutes of downtime.

I have been having a similar problem the last few days. I have a SB5101N modem. I wonder if anyone is having this problem with a modem other than a Motorola SurfBoard? Like would changing the modem fix the problem?

Re: Modem keeps resetting itself

I was having the same problem the last coupe of days at random times. It might be the main switch or the node congestion. I am posting just as a marker. If the problem continues over the week I will post a complaint. If it is just a glitch.. lets hope it is... It may go away.

Yeah, tech guy came again... Still a problem. But at least this time he actually looked at the lines and did something outside instead of the modem switcheroo.

Re: Modem keeps resetting itself

I just got the modem switcharoo as well. my modem is fine, as well as my lines. the technician told me its been happening everywhere, also mentioned they are trying to create a 60mps server for customers for hardcore gamers, and installing that into the servers could of caused the problem as of late.

He put me on a immediate help list.

I hope this doesn't last forever

I've been experiencing this problem for about four weeks now. Still doing it and Charter says they are still working on it...
As for the 60 meg service causing it, if it is I hope they fix it or quit trying to make it work cause I'm paying money for a dysfunctional service and it's starting to get old after all this time.

I have had issues with mine for over a year. They keep telling me my connection is stable and I have posted yet again in the direct forum today. Now I am just waiting on them to escalate it again to the local market.

Problem is no one would listen when I would say there was a problem. They would send a tech out and they would try the old its your equipment which both my husband and I know was not the problem. We ruled out our equipment 10 months ago. Finally after I started using the direct forum would they send a tech who would actually listen to what I was saying. I told my hubby I am sick of being yanked around over this.

Yeah, that' s a bit excessive.

Hopefully they can find out what's going on and we can all get normal non-rebooting service back.

Re: Modem keeps resetting itself

Yeah I have been gaming since I switched to cable 10 years ago. 3down 256up was plenty. Anything over doesnt do anything for gaming. Im on 5down 1up now any couldnt tell any difference besides maybe 3-5ms better ping which wont make any difference. Highest pings I get to US game servers is 60ms with an average of 30ms and 10ms to local servers.

The only thing that would require over 5/1 is if you run servers from your house. Only an idiot would do since local gaming server companies are cheap as heck to run one for you.
