Traceroute and Ping test

I've been having problems with my internet and when I ask people online they say to show them my Traceroute and Ping test. I know how to do this but is the information safe to give out to people?

Yes it's safe. You're not sharing private information.

Re: Traceroute and Ping test

Some people like to hide their MAC addresses when they give out network details. MAC addresses are individual numbers assigned to (almost) every network device created within the last some-odd years. It's a unique identifying number that identifies your specific device.

I'm not exactly sure how dangerous it is to let this slip out, but I would hazard a guess that your modem or router's MAC address would be more dangerous to give out than your wireless card, for example.

Besides that, the route that your traffic takes to get to a certain site isn't really private information. It's a bit like your route to work every day. It really depends how much anonymity you want to maintain. However, the fact that you posted on a public forum means you're already okay with a certain amount of exposure, unless you're at a library or friend's house (sneaky sneaky).
