Couple questions : Debating between SBC/DSLX
Greetings,
I have two simple questions in regards to the service of DSLX ..
[I'm in the Downtown Los Angeles area, 4000 ft. from the CO]
1. What DSL modem is given for the free leasing?
2. SBC's current promo is $39.99 for a 12-month contract [1500-3000 kbps / 384 kbps] ..... and DSLX's current is $42.95.
Is there anyway for DSLX to match the SBC price?
Thanks in advance!! :)

DSLX does not do pricematching. No need to when they beat SBC on features.

may i ask which features?
The only difference I see is that the upload for DSLX is [384-416 vs. SBC's max at 384], and also a static IP.... ?
also, is there a shipping cost for the initial equipment? SBC charges $12.95 :(
Thanks for any help! :)

is network quality actually better if it's on the same backbone as SBC?
SBC doesn't offer Newsgroups?

In most of California, DSLExtreme provides their own core services and Internet backbone/peering connections. SBC provides only the subscriber loop.

DSLX provides a Supernews account which has higher retention, higher completion, and a larger number of groups.

I dont know about SBC Newsgroups, but DSL Extreme allows you two logins with 256kbs each, thus resulting in 512kbs

Sign up for SBC, and wait until something goes wrong or you need help (which it will). You'll immediately regret not spending the $3/mo.
Or, alternatively, sign up with DSLX, wait until something goes wrong or you need help (which it will), and George will become your hero.
Just browse through the reviews of DSLExtreme on this website. How many places can you go where the users of an ISP will try to convince you to sign up for it? I'm trying to sell you DSLExtreme, and I'm not getting paid for it- in fact I pay DSLExtreme.
How many companies have customers that loyal? There is a thread just a few down below yours about Verizon vs DSLX- it might be worth a read.

Re: Couple questions : Debating between SBC/DSLX
If I sign up at $42.99 for a 12-month contract, does it automatically go to 54.95 after the 1st year and remain at that price? Or will it only go up to the amount of the service at that time [month-to-month price]?
Is there a charge to have the DSL equipment to get shipped to you on initial signup?
Thanks for all the help so far! [i'll read the verizon/dslx thread also :)]

Re: Couple questions : Debating between SBC/DSLX
There are two options for the package.
Competitive Promotional Package -- $42.95/mo
1 Year Subscription ($54.95/mo after 1 st year)
Exclusive Price Freeze Guarantee -- $49.95/mo
Price will never go up! Price Guaranteed for as long as you keep the service
There is a 12.95 shipping charge for the DSL modem and a $2.48 charge for California use tax on the modem lease.

Greetings George!
Thanks for the reply!
I was wondering if you happen to know which DSL modem DSLX provides for residents in the Downtown LA area?
Also, at the end of the 12-month contract, are we able to re-sign up for another one year contract for the current deal/price at the time? [instead of letting the price jump to $54.95] ??
Thanks! :)

also wondering .... :)
If i'm uploading a lot, does it slow down my download speed?
I currently have earthlink, and when I upload near my maximum of 96kbps, my download crawls down to 56k speeds!
?? :)

Daemon @ 16th May 11:29PM:
Re: Couple questions : Debating between SBC/DSLX
due to the nature of TCP/IP and the internet, whenever you are uploading a lot you will get slower downloads.
Let me explain-
Say you are downloading from me. I have no way of knowing that you are getting what i'm sending unless you say 'got that much', 'ok, got that part too', etc. So, every so often, your computer sends data back to who you are downloading from to tell thes server you got it okay. However, now assume you are uploading at near your max. Now, there is no upload bandwidth left for you to say 'okay' back with, so the server thinks you didn't get the data and resends it. Since you get the same data over and over, the overall download rate decreases. In general you need 10-15% of your upload bandwidth open to download at max speed.

George,
For the 1500-3000/384-416kbps package, what upload speed would you recommend capping off at so it doesn't cannabalize the download stream?
[i'll be able to find a program that'll limit my upload speed]
thanks :)

Re: Couple questions : Debating between SBC/DSLX
I do not think that there is a program that you can do it overall for. Most applications have a way to set the max upload speed. You would be able to do it at an application level but I do not know of a program to set it overall.

1492 = PPPoE
1500 = Bridged (e.g., Static, or DHCP)

Re: Couple questions : Debating between SBC/DSLX
since the dsl modem is in bridged mode [if you want to use it with a router] then i'd assume everyone in the network should be set at 1500.
versus.
if the dsl modem isn't set in bridged mode [and connected straight to the one computer that's using it] then it's set at 1492?
Is that right? :)
also, does it slow down your connection if you have the wrong setting?

Re: Couple questions : Debating between SBC/DSLX
Your modem can be in bridge mode and your computer/router could be handling PPPoE. The appropriate MTU is still 1492 in that case. PPPoE takes up 8 bytes out of the 1500 byte ethernet frame, which is why you need to reduce it. I think if you leave it at 1500, path MTU discovery will lower it for you anyway.
Leaving it lower (say 1492 on a bridged static connection) unnecessarily reduces your efficiency, although only by a tiny, practically unnoticeable amount.

When would you set it at 1500 [which scenario] ?
Would you put it at 1500 when the dsl modem is doing the PPPoE?

That is incorrect. I am using DSL and am most definately not using PPPoE.
PPPoE is for dynamic addresses, but not for static IP's.

Re: Couple questions : Debating between SBC/DSLX
Same here. I'm on a DSL circuit, no PPPoE, and with MTU set to 1500.
True static bridged or routed IPs are becoming a thing of the past, though. SBC-Ameritech assigns so-called static IPs using PPPoE. This fixed, or "sticky IP," approach will also be implemented at some unknown date in the near future in the other SBC regions, including PacBell and Southwestern Bell. I'm not sure, but I think SNET already uses PPPoE-assigned sticky IPs.
This is what Covad, as an ISP, does too, for one fixed IP. If you pay extra for five static IPs, then I believe they're true static IPs instead of PPPoE-assigned sticky IPs.
So count your blessings that you're with an ISP who still offers real static IPs.

does dsl extreme use real static IPs?
Curiously ...
why are the two settings different for non-PPPoE and PPPoE connections? (1492 vs. 1500)
thanks! :) [i think i've decided to go with DSLX instead of SBC :)]

Here are a few words of advice... DON'T DO IT, DON'T DO IT, DON'T DO IT! At all costs DO NOT GO WITH DSL EXTREME! They are the most piss poor company I have ever had the displeasure to deal with in my life! Free dial up is better than DSLX!

That's currently true of DSLX, but not univerally true. You could have a statically assigned IP over PPPoE. BellSouth currently does this, and I hear SBC is talking about switching over to it.
As stated above, 1492 is for PPPoE connections. The reason is that the PPPoE protocol eats up 8 bytes out of the 1500 byte Ethernet frame. If PPPoE isn't there (as is the case with DSLX's static IP service) you can use the full 1500.

i use QoS and i can get about 85% of my upload while still getting 90+% of my download also if you will ever use newsgroups don't go with SBC, sure they are fast, u get ur max speed to them, but they are useless, tons of newsgroups blocked, almost always the attachments arent complete...

badtzjunk,
If you don't mind using linux as your router/firewall, then you can have router/firewall just like the big boys. I use a 266mhz laptop for this. I have the rules set to prioritize the ack(receive packs) so my downloads don't slow down. A simple down and dirty script can be found at »lartc.org/wondershaper/.
IProute2 and iptables are powerful enough tools to even make your machine the fastest on your home network.
