I need to decide between DSLX and SBC's PPPoE offers. Can anyone comment pros/cons for me? Pricing seems to be about the same.

A few weeks ago moved into a new home and ordered a Static IP line from DSLX (SBC line), but instead of jumping on the $42/month with 1 year contract, I decided to start out month to month at $54/month.

I though that it would be worth paying the $60 setup charge and extra $12 for the first month so that I can get an idea what type of speed my phone line is capable of (before committing to the year contract).

Well the line has been ramped up and the speed is great! The problem now is that DSLX raised the prices of their Static IP 3000/384-416 package to $49/month (bad timing for me), but they lowered the Dynamic line to $37/month.

If I switch to Dynamic I have to pay another $50 to DSLX for the Static to Dynamic conversion. This is why I am tempted to order SBC because they won't charge me the extra $50.

Here are my knowns/unknowns:
I know that DSLX allows better, but perhaps slower (66 kilobytes/sec) connects to Usenet via Supernews than SBC Yahoo, I assume the tech support is superior w/ DSLX, Line speed will be the same, I will probably not use either for primary Email so that is a non-issue, I moved from a Cox to Timewarner area and I've heard nothing too good about Roadrunner Cable modem - so I am compelled to stick w/ some sort of DSL.

you're going to get 15 responses just like mine, which I hope only solidifies my point even more.

DSLX's support team is one of the best I've ever dealt with, and certainly the best in the technology industry. (Apple may rival it, but I've had no dealings with them, yet)

If you have a problem and SBC has to enter the picture on your DSLX line, DSLX talks to SBC instead of you. Ignoring that fact that DSLX might have more clout, I'm sure SBC treats a DSLX tech on the phone like a much more knowledable person, and DSLX probably gets to talk directly to a tech, instead of the $#%(#$ing customer service dept. Who would you rather have calling?

You also get perks, like the recent 100mb mail upgrade, or the addition of more static IPs on all plans.

You'll pay $50 to change to dynamic IP and save $5/month on what you would have been paying before they changed the price. You'll need 10 months to recoop the cost. Alternatively, you can save $50 by not switching to dynamic and pay $7 more per month, which means it would take 7 months to equal the fee.

My recommendation? Switch to a 12 month static IP contract, if you like static IP, or 12 month dynamic if you'll have absolutely no use for static IP, ever. (If you switch to dynamic, and then realize you wanted static, you'll have to pay a fee again). If you want static with SBC, you have to pay $75+ a month.

So, in short, DSLX is better all around, and far superior when it comes to customer service and support. Choose them.

Because I know they will take care of me, DSL Extreme equals "peace of mind".

Their standards are way above the, average customer service.

I believe it's called Customer Care.

DSLX has excellent customer support and service.. I will never ever go back to SBC.

Even if DSLX prices were higher, it is worth paying for the great service (please don't raise prices because I said that...)

Anyway, I believe if you switch to dynamic, but sign a 12-month contract, you can avoid the $50

And contracts are fine (at least for me), since I have not seen their level of support with any other provider

Stick with DSLX.. you won't go wrong

DSLX explained to me that regardless of signing a 1-year contract that I would still incur the $50 charge. This is because SBC charges DSLX $50 to reconfigure the line, and DSLX passes this cost on to "existing" customers (even though I'm only a few weeks into my first month-to-month with DSLX).

I'm a bit disappointed that DSLX doesn't want to waive the $50 if I sign a year contract, especially since I already paid for my initial setup fees ($60). You would think that they would want to keep the business.

I wonder if I just cancel and then sign-up for a year if I would still have to pay the $50?

you probably won't have to pay the fee, but you'll have to incur significant downtime as they deprovision and then reprovision your line, as well as paying a new setup fee.
