Atlantic Broadband thottles BitTorrent!
Just like Rogers cable in Canada, ABB completely throttles BitTorrent and speeds can not be acheived.
I'm truly upset as this is the only broadband internet connection available to me in my area.
I'm stuck using IRC, Newsgroups, and DC++.
I want my BitTorrent!
Does anybody know any ways around?

I see you're in Middletown. Are you sure you're not lit up for Fios? The only other option is Netgazers but that's pricy and not nearly as fast as ABB or Fios...

Re: Atlantic Broadband thottles BitTorrent!
Use a SOCKS proxy; with some tweaking you'll get semi-decent speeds. Nothing like NO throttle, but do-able.

Re: Atlantic Broadband thottles BitTorrent!
I call ABB every day now and complain how it is not right for them to limit my speed when we bought 5MB unlimited. Downloading and uploading Torrent files is a nightmare now! I went from 640KBs a sec to next to nothing now and upset isn't the word. Today i was told by them that P2P sharing is mostly illegal downloads so they are policing the net and not allowing it. I can't even host a chat room on Ares. Not one person can make it inside and the room motd took me so long to make so nice. I said i just want to do like other people in the world. So the guy said soon all ISPs are going to block p2p programs. That's a nasty thought.
I have no other ISP choice here. As for doing Bit Torrents I found by rebooting my PC and modem every few hours it makes the torrents start moving again a little better. I know torrent sites don't like you shutting down but its the only way to get any activity. All in all it sucks but i hate giving up something I love to do cause ABB says so. I feel my freedom has been taken away and I can't do what i want to with the service I pay for!

Re: Atlantic Broadband thottles BitTorrent!
No problems here with BitTorrent. Download speed always is between 280kb/s and 320 kb/s which is correct according to the package i pay for.
On the other hand, I don't use BitTorrent 24/7 and i don't use any questionable P2P networks ;)

Fios will start construction soon in my area. Can't wait, I've had just enough of this p2p throttling crap.
With a 15/2 connection from fios, I can get a max of 3888 gb / 518 gb transferred per month. Insane. And just this sunday, circuit city was selling Seagate 200gb hdds for 29.99. Time to add on some additional hdds :)

They don't throttle my connection at all, and I use Bit Torrent alot. Then again, I also use it for Linux distros, and yes, ISPs CAN tell what you are downloading, as BT traffic is flagged and wide open that way. All the techs have to do is watch the server logs and see everything you do online, heh.

It's gonna take 428 hours to download a 700mb file for me on BT. It's been runiing for a couple of days at an average of 1 kbps.

Whoa, all of a sudden my BT works. Amazingly it reached it's actual speed. Their program must have a bug in it.

I am making a wild guess here but in theory it could be possible that your computer has a bug and with the Cable Company everything is fine......

Nope, there are six computers in my home and p2p dosen't work on any of them.

...actually, before I had Atlantic Broadband, I used BT and LimeWire and they both worked fine. However when I switched, both ceased to work. LimeWire won't even connect to the Gnutella network.

My torrents are blocked on Miami Beach. They are using Cisco 7200's which have modules for packet inspection.

YES YES YES!!!! Verizon contractors are outside burying fiber optic cable. I will be the first one in my neighborhood to get fios. No more throttling!

Re: Atlantic Broadband thottles BitTorrent!
Damn. That last post sounded like that of a girl who just got a new barbie. Well, I was excited at the moment is all. If I recall correctly, the fiber optic cable has a maximum bandwidth of 780mbit/125mbit. This comes out to be approximately 78,000kbps down/12,500kbps. Insane huh? Just imagine the power you'd have if you could uncap them somehow.
