Anyone have a speed increase in the Philly area

I am on the 6000 down plan, and all my speed tests from various locations put my speed at the 9000 to 10000 range today. Is comcast upgrading speeds again?

I'm in Palmyra, NJ which is RIGHT OUTSIDE philly(under 1 min away)... i had the 6mbit plan yesterday... speeds were normal... I upgraded to 8mbit today(YAY!!) and speeds are as advertised.. getting a little over 8mbit and a little under 768 for upload.

so no increase of speed over here

I am in your area and noticed increased download also. Upload remains the same. Have not tried any extended download to see what the sustained values may be though.

Re: Anyone have a speed increase in the Philly area

being a comcast tech agent i can tell you that nationwide comcast has increased both the regular tier and the speed tier from 6mbs to 8mbs and 8mbs to 10mbs respectivly. The only other speed increase is in the Atlanta market where a large speed increase of up to 16 megs is being tested, this market was chosen due to the very high usage of our speed tier.

I was getting 7800-9000 and today 13000-15000
Guess they want you to stay and not to switch to V.

And being a knowledgeable comcast customer I can tell you that you're either mistaken or just full of crap.

Re: Anyone have a speed increase in the Philly area

Well, after downloading a rather large file I see that speeds are still being limited to 6 mb/sec. Only thing I see different is that the connection seems to want to run like hell but I can watch the modem limit the download off and on. If anything has changed it seems to be that the potential for great speeds now exists. I would bet that an uncapped modem would really be sizzling right about now.

Spikes. Download a large file and see what the average speed is. Speed tests such as the one you mention do not run long enough to provide a realistic value.

And - speed bursting only occurs on systems with Cadent routers in the headend.

Still on a Cisco UBR here - no bursting... :p

Re: Anyone have a speed increase in the Philly area

Prior to yesterday, I was getting the usual 6 to 7000 download. I noticed how much faster my connection was yesterday, so did some speed tests. As you can see the download is faster, upload remains in the same area.

Re: Anyone have a speed increase in the Philly area

As stated above, the truest speed tests are based on the time it takes to download a large file from a fast server. Flash and Java tests are convenient, but not necessarily accurate. Here are some of the large downloadable test files (or parent folders of test files) that I use:

1) »ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/pub/test64
2) »speedtest.rochester.rr.com/test.zro
3) »ftp://ftp.aol.com/aol6.0/171340/setupaol
4) »ftp://ftp.newaol.com/aol6.0/179902/
5) »speedtest.rochester.rr.com/

Start the d/l of a large file with IE and let it run at least 50% of the way through. Observe the transfer rate at the point where it settles in at a fairly stable number. That's your speed. Do the same from all five locations above. The best result of the bunch is more or less your *true* maximum speed.

Re: Anyone have a speed increase in the Philly area

I'm sorry to rain on everyone's parade but I don't think it's a speed increase at all, I am almost certain it's not. I am in the DC area (PG County) and I dont know if any of you guys noticed but Speakeasy's speed test has changed its interface to a small degree and ever since it did, it's been giving me bogus speed results....16kbps....It's simply something with Speakeasy .I doubt Comcast would just let me have crazy speeds like that for free...

On a side note, I notice my IP address has changed to 71.230.10x.xxx, from this 68.80.78.72. Seems like a totally different IP address range than anything I have had before. Maybe its related.

Re: Anyone have a speed increase in the Philly area

Having more download is great. But what about a bump in upstream? I mean, 8Mb/s should more MORE then sufficient for anyones downloading needs. But with torrents and voip and gaming/etc/etc we really need the upstream bumped or Fios is going to kill Comcast with its 2Mb/s upstream.

Just my two cents.

It is impossible that a speed increase would happen in California before the east coast. dadkins lives in Cali and no way he would get something before the east coast folks. :) MrChupacabra would never allow that. :p

FiOS is only in certain markets and Comcast doesn't even consider it a threat. I have FiOS Fiber in my neck of the woods. I just need them to make it availible.
