Does anybody know if i can pick up the dcx3400 at any location?
If this was answered before, I missed it, but can these boxes get a firmware upgrade to be multiroom when that becomes available, or is a whole new installaton required for that?
YOU WILL NEED THE dcx3400M and dcx3200M boxes for multiroom. the current boxes dont do multiroom.
Any update on when Multiroom and the "M" boxes will be available?

Has anyone else noticed a recent degradation of picture quality on ESPN HD in Frisco. Is a new compression scheme being used? ESPN2 is fine. ESPN is horrible now.
I was just about ready to jump the Dish ship for TW/RR cable (probably in Jan/Fed '10), but when I see stuff like this I back off. I've been with Dish since they've had HD; their signal is pristine, except the rare occasions of rain fade, and lately, I haven't even dealt with that problem. When they (North Texas) switch to DOCSIS 3, which is apparently planned for early 2010, will that change help picture quality? Or, is picture quality somewhat unrelated to bandwidth?

You're kidding right? I have both DirectTV for use at tailgates, and TWC at home, and there is no comparison on picture quality.
DirectTV and Dish are compressed to hell and don't even resemble cable HD quality. This is coming from someone who can flip back and forth, on the same TV on the same network program. No comparison. I'd love not to pay for both, but can't stand DirecTV's HD quality.

Wow... a tailgater. Was just wondering about comments made regarding some of the HD channels experiencing quality issues.
Anyway, thanks for the very fine analysis. I'll make note that one subscriber sees cable as superior to the dish(s).

Whether TWC just updated their guide for the new seasons, not sure if there was an actual SW or FW update, or whether they tweaked their own software, my box went into a forced reboot during House the other week, and ever since that forced reboot, the issues have been popping up. It was the first night of the new TV season.
Been told it's a software issue on their end.
I have the exact same issue with my DVRs. Any updated from TWC for when it will be fixed?
reply
Topperdog @ 3rd Nov 02:39PM:
Re: [Cable] Dallas/Ft Worth Metro Vol I -- Time Warner
My last communication with them was that there was NO time frame for a fix, though they did acknowlege that there was a problem on their end.
I would suggest people either call in, or email complaints to them regarding the issue. I am in the midst of probably not paying the DVR portion of my bill and see what they say.
It's been a big problem becuase every other week a series recording doesn't record, adn you constantly have to check every program every day to see if it will record.
I am going to write another complaint next monday and see what the response is. Last time I got a form letter response identical to teh first complaint. it took me three weeks to convince them it wasn't the DVR box, but their software that was the issue.

It has existed with all of combinations of DVR hardware they've had since May of 2005 (which is when I became a subscriber).
It doesn't matter which box you have, as the problems remain in the software.
It's nothing new, and isn't going to be fixed any time soon. 4.5 years now and counting.

TWC Dallas will use Motorola MTR700's for Tivo customer. This allows the Tivo HD/HD XL/Series3, Moxi HD-DVR, and Cable Card PC customer to view SDV channels. It's not compatible with CableCard TV's though. The Motorola TA can also support more than 2 streams making it ideal for considering the new Ceton multistream cablecard tuner for PC.

I wonder if we're going to have to pay more per month for that. That's an issue to me, as I have two TiVo's. One has a single CableCARD in it, and the other has two in there.

Re: [Cable] Dallas/Ft Worth Metro Vol I -- Time Warner
the reason maybe that they dont want to separate the 3:1 HD QAM that carries KDFI HD, KDAF HD, and KPXD HD.
the solution for LATV is add it to the same qam that has WFAA HD, KERA HD, WFAA 2. or add it to the same qam that KDFW HD, and KXAS HD and its sub channels.

I started up with TWC back in February. I canceled two months ago because I was going to be out of the country. I had no problem with any payments.
I restarted my service today with the same setup. Now they are demanding a $75 deposit for the DVR which I will get back after 12 months.

The only downside to U-Verse is the slow internet and only having 2 simultaneous HD streams to the whole house. I'd switch too, if it wasn't for these limitations.

Looked around on TWC Dallas for info on that. All I could find is this:
If you read that, it tells you to go to »www.timewarnercable.com/tuningadapter - which in turn forwards you to the following page, which is non existent (yet) on their site:
Some of the other TWC's have pages for SDV and a Tuning adapter, but Dallas doesn't - if you replace Dallas in the following link, you get a 404.

Well, the cable guy came out to reconnect my service. He saw my HDMI cable and said, "All we have are the old boxes that don't have HDMI".
Great Ceasar's Ghost, can Crime Warner get anything right?
I went over to the TWC Customer Service Center on Chenault street and they didn't have any DCX3400 boxes. At least I didn't get carjacked. They did have 1 box left - a DCT6412 with a HDMI port while I wait for a DCX3400. Unfortunately, the HDMI port isn't working.
Is there some trick to getting a DCX3400? Is there another Customer Service Center? Do I keep having to drive there over and over to see if they have them around? I asked if I could call and see if they have any in stock so I don't have to drive over there. They don't accept calls and the Customer Service phone line doesn't know what the Customer Service Center has in stock.

Re: [Cable] Dallas/Ft Worth Metro Vol I -- Time Warner
it's always easy to bash TWC, but I recently got a nice surprise. I noticed that my bill had gone up a few bucks (like $14 or so) so I called to ask why. They said that the deal I had ran 12 months and expired with no similar replacement. The customer service rep offered their Price Lock Guarantee deal. My basic service went down by about $5, the DVR went down by about $10, and the $3 HD tier fee went away, so it saved me about $18/mo or so. Not so bad. Yes I had to agree to stay for 24 months - which is a no brainer for me since I have no FIOS, but they also sent me a $25 off coupon. The downside is they have a $150 declining early termination fee. But, I only have to stay 6 months or so for a break even on the termination fee (if my math's right). At any rate not a bad deal. And if they are upping the HD content, makes it even better.

motorola870,
Yesterday I went to the Chenault, Garland, Mesquite, and Richardson centers and none of them had the new boxes. I have some questions for you or anyone else out there.
1. Why does it take so long for channel information to download when plugging in a box for the first time? 8 hours after hooking it up, most of the guide says "To Be Announced". Is there a way to manually force an update?
2. Why doesn't TWC remove analog channels to free up bandwidth? I'm looking at a document about Comcast's Digitial Upgrade and saw this:
"One analog channel consumes the same amount of bandwidth as 10 digital or three HD channels."
3. Is there any information on how many subscribers TWC and FIOS/UVERSE have in the DFW area, and how this has changed over time? I would love to see the numbers.

All this means is that TWC's contract to carry the channels is nearing expiration, and TWC is obligated to notify its customers when that may occur. TWC has played hardball with other content providers before, most notably Disney, over carriage terms, so anything is possible.

To my knowledge, the "hardball" gets worked out at the last second - the only one to ever be really dropped in recent memory is HDNet, and that's TWC system wide. AND there was a lot of stink in the press before it happened.
I have no fear about Food staying on.

Well, well, well - it looks like they are dropping analog channels to make room for the new SD and HD Channels after all. Good job, TWC.
I don't see anything being deleted there...?????

The analog version of those channels are being dropped. Just the digital version will remain. That's what I see.
Currently those channels are being sent twice. One channel on analog basic/extended basic and the other on digital cable.
ABC Family on channels 61 and 105
Oxygen on channels 73 and 156
CMT on channels 63 and 287
TruTV on channels 47 and 266
The wording of the change to the Style channel [channels 50 and 150] is different from the others for some reason.

I don't understand the notifications on Sundance and NBA TV. My September 2009 Channel lineup already shows them at their respective channel numbers.
They're moving from a higher tier down to Digital Basic.
Weren't they always on Digital Basic? My September 2009 Channel Lineup shows that they are on Digital Basic.

We were both half right :D according to my 03/27/08 lineup. Sundance was Digital Basic, but NBA was Digital Sport (and blocked on my boxes right now because I don't subscribe to that package). I had Sundance lumped in with Encore in Digital Plus in my mind, but the fact that it was already basic does raise the question of why it was in the notice.

Bravo and USA HD should be useful comes Winter Olympics, NBC usually broadcast the events live on those channels if memory serves me right.
That's a short list of nothing but switch-around, and i hope that's not the end of it. My most wanted HD channel -- AMC HD is not there.

Has anyone noticed any changes to their on-demand menu? After you have watch your selection, it goes into the "Saved Movie" menu. When you select your saved movie, you do not have a choice to delete it anymore. Apparently you have to wait for the 24 hrs for it to automaticely delete.

Re: [Cable] Dallas/Ft Worth Metro Vol I -- Time Warner
Just noticed something about the 4 HD adds (SyFy, CNBC, Bravo, USA)... They're NBC Universal properties. All of 'em. I wonder if this (their add here) has anything to do with the possible sale of NBC. Some of these have been available on other TWC's for a little while now.
Anyway, the channel change page on the TWC Dallas site still lists only the additional sub channels - that change image from the last page in this thread still hasn't been picked up there. Just FYI...

the changes are not related. Twc just waited a while to add them. They were planning to make the changes. They had to make agreements with those 5 channels to move them to digital.
They are most likely adding the HD channels to coincide with the 2010 winter olympics.
TWC austin is adding MSNBC HD at the same time that dallas is adding the 7 NBC universal channels in dallas.

I just don't understand why the HD lineup is so bad for the 5th largest DMA in the country. Look up Rochester, NY and see all the HD the 80th ranked DMA has compared to DFW.

What does A28 allow you to do?
My biggest gripe is that you record a program and you can't select the "Find more episodes" option. I have to keep doing manual searches over and over again.
My ReplayTV had this ability in 1998.
EDIT: from »www.multichannel.com/article/339···_Web.php
With the new i-Guide A28, Comcast is offering myDVR Manager, which lets subscribers schedule recordings on one or more DVRs from the Web at www.comcast.net/mydvr.
Comcast and other cable operators have trailed DirecTV, Verizon, AT&T, TiVo and others in providing the ability to remotely manage DVRs, and it's a feature competitors have touted as part of recent marketing campaigns.
Other new features in the i-Guide A28 include "skip ahead/skip back" to fast-forward or rewind DVR recordings in five-minute increments; a new on-screen keyboard designed to make typing in searches faster; DVR folders that automatically group shows together; the ability to search and set recordings by actor, director or keyword, similar to TiVo's WishList; and bulk deletion of recordings.
Interactive TV features being launched with the IPG are shop-by-remote to make HSN purchases; "request for information" triggers for advertisers; and the ability to set program reminders or recordings directly from certain TV show and movie promos.
The A28 guide also shows viewers who tune to a standard-definition channel an on-screen prompt that lets them switch to an HD version if it's available.
"The enhancements bring customers more choice and convenience by allowing customers to easily skip forward or back during their favorite programs, watch their favorite programs in HD without having to scroll to a higher channel to see if it is available and search for programs by title, director, keyword and more," Comcast said.
Comcast is launching the A28 i-Guide market-by-market, with Chattanooga, Tenn., one of the first systems to receive the upgrade. The MSO expects to continue to roll out the enhanced IPG throughout 2009 and into early 2010.
