[Speed] Over 1mbps upload normal?
I have someone on my buddy list in GA who uses comcast and always bragging about speed... He has been able to upload to me at nearly 200KB/s for the first 15~MB of a file (as if powerboost was working on his upload too). It has been like this for atleast 4 months, is he the only one or is there some issue down in GA with the powerboost?

Where in Georgia? I haven't done extensive testing, but on the (not-so-accurate) speed test sites I'm seeing 1-2Mb up as well.
--Later--
I just found a test site that uses a fairly large test file (10 MB) and the upload ran over 2 Mbps until about half way then dropped to the normal speed. So it definitely does appear Comcast is testing speed boost on the upload as well here.

nothing yet in the Atlanta area...up or down, but it would be very nice to see it on the upload side of things.
One thing I don't get is how they recognize what a "large" file is...I mean do they look at some headers or something to see what the size of the file is? Much the same way that browsers can tell (guess) how long the download you are starting will take?
I am curious because my primary use of this feature (if it makes it here) would be over a vpn where they couldn't see this info.

Re: [Speed] Over 1mbps upload normal?
I live in Reston, Virginia and my area is being used as a test market for Comcast. There is an enormous amount of pressure for Comcast where I live. Just about everyone around here has a bachelor's degree, works in a technical field, has to pay a minimum of over half a million dollars for a typical single family home, and FiOS is everywhere you look, except at my house it seems.
I was getting 16/1 service. I know we aren't supposed to trust speed test sites, and for the most part I completely agree; however, the Speakeasy test results have always been a very good indicator of my internet performance.
I used to see results of 16-18 mbps down with consistent low 900 kbps for an upload speed.
I noticed a significant increase in my upload speeds. I was uploading a large file to my corporate office through my company's VPN, as I often do, and I did a rough calculation of how long I expected the transfer to take based on my upload bandwidth. I found the time to complete the upload to be about half of what I had expected it to be for the size of the file.
I immediately went to test my speed at my usual speed test haunt, and lo and behold, the test results supported what I had seen in real world file transfers.
 Significant Increase?!? |

Those speeds look familiar to me as Adelphia's 16/2. I wonder with the transitions happening, if Comcast is testing 2000 up?
It would be interesting to see your provisioned rates.

This rented modem just won't do it. Any other method to get my provisioned rates, aside from calling Comcast?

Nah, I have a Terayon, and guess what, I can access the modem config file now.
Woo hoo!
Edit: DOCSIS 2.0 too? Interesting.

Very cool!
I didn't know your modem provided it.
This is a significant finding. So Comcast has upgraded to 16/2 in the 16/1 areas.
It's not Adelphia's config file which is Extreme: 16000/2000
Provisioned Rate: 19300/2410.

Had you notice the modem ever said DOCSIS 1.1 prior to this.
I just wonder if the DOCSIS info is reporting the software on the modem or what the CMTS is?

Yes, the increased upload speed definitely came packaged with the upgrade to DOCSIS 2.0. That is, if I really am setup with 2.0.

I would agree with your assessment about version 1.1. There really aren't that many people around here that are still using Comcast, since FiOS is here. I'm enjoying the speed increases.

This makes a lot of sense for the upgrade since a few Adelphia areas were transitioned today. My area being one of them that is 16/2.

Why is it that comcast seems to set the caps above the download speeds and always exactly on the upload speeds??
They know you want to actually achieve those speeds on one side...so why not the other?
It would certainly be nice to see those kinds of speeds offered outside a fios area soon, but I won't hold my breath for very long.

It seems to be about 360ish for the 384 folks and 700ish for the 768 folks.
I usually get about 710 when I have nothing else going on on my connection.
Looks like there are no people with the 16/1 or ?? tier taking tests on this website to log the results. At least not on the front page.

For another clue, I had some issue here and had a tech at my house in August. As he was leaving he informed me of some big changes comeing our way but wouldn't elaborate. Said he couldn't. I tried to pry it out of him but he held fast and just said you will love what is coming. He said they should be starting work in our area here in September. Well it's early Oct now and I haven't noticed anything although I've just returned from a weeklong trip.
Anyway perhaps some of you are now seeing what has been such a secret. Just a guess on my part though. It'd be nice if we could get some of our resident Comcast people to break! lol

For my upload speeds, I am seeing about the same level of overhead with a 16/2 connection as everyone else typically does at Comcast, about 80-85%. I posted the results of a much more accurate upload testing procedure at the following link.
»Unofficial Next Comcast Speed Upgrade Rumor Topic
I am able to upload files at nearly 12MB per minute. The math all works out. 12MB's is about 96 megabits. 96 megabits per minute divided by 60 seconds is about 1.6mbps, and that is what I am consistently seeing, about 80% of my provisioned upload rate.

The higher these numbers go...the more users will start to notice that they are not getting what they see advertised.
But honestly...if I could get the 16/2 tier you have today by calling up and saying so...I would.

From what I have seen from 2 ISPs I've had, they typically test upgrades in select areas before publicly announcing new advertised tiers. The time between testing and publicly announcing varies.

I would agree if Comcast had implemented DOCSIS 2.0 throughout most of their network, much like Adelphia has done. But considering that Comcast has stodgily remained at DOCSIS 1.1 at best, I might suggest that these speeds are more likely the result of a desperate attempt to hang on to customers being pulled away by FiOS. After all, once the customers get a taste of Verizon's internet performance, the next logical step is to give their television service a try.

The 16/1 or 16/2 is in response to Fios competition, but I think the question was in general towards any upgrades.

I just didn't want anyone to get the impression that the 16/? service was something that Comcast was testing for use throughout their network. I don't believe they could handle that capacity with their current resources.
It seems obvious to me that the boardroom decision has been to hold out until DOCSIS 3.0 technology can be employed. And when Comcast shows their hand, I think it will be more obvious.

I agree concerning resources.
It's going to be a sore subject with existing Comcast customers when they see select former Adelphia areas able to get 16/2(with higher provisioning) & DOCSIS 2.0 paying the same or less.
Edit: Comcast fixed that issue by taking our higher caps away.
Apparently I'm almost officially Comcastic.

well I am sure that they will try to standardize the systems that have just been absorbed or traded or whatever they were.
After that is done I would hope to see something with a higher upload in non fios areas.
I'm guessing after the first of the year before there is anything official.
It is promising however that there is a spot in GA (where Big_D is) where there is no verizon that does have the faster upload speeds.

Same "Silver" tier here. Good "Powerboost" download results but the upload usually tops out between 352 and 355 kbps.
Last Result:
Download Speed: 20831 kbps (2603.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 353 kbps (44.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
I used to see uploads of about 360 but not since Powerboost was introduced.

I actually did a few speed tests today and got as high as 362kbps on the upload, which I think is very good. The download speeds of course are inaccurate due to Comcast implementing the "Powerboost" technology. But in the end, I'm getting what I'm paying for.

I am also in GA (Augusta) and have noticed this behavior for quite a few months now. I also download shows from usenet which always makes me hit the caps. On a speed test site, me results come in at anywhere from 10 Mbps to 30 Mbps for the download, and the upload is consistent at just under 2 Mbps. When actually downloading large files, it will start very high, then eventually level off at my cap of 8 Mbps. The upload does the same. Starts off at 2 Mbps for a bit, then levels off at 768 Kbps.

Nope...read back on the first page of this thread.
We have already discussed that comcast gives zero allowance for overhead and that you will see about 80-85% of the caps in the best case scenario.
