[Modem] Atlanta area, losing DNS resolution randomly

Westel modem, 6.0 service. Had been stable up until about a month ago. LQ test at »/linequality/3···/2527255

Primary DNS 205.152.37.23
Secondary DNS 205.152.144.23
Primary DNS Name dns.asm.bellsouth.net
Secondary DNS Name dns.mia.bellsouth.net

When playing WOW (yes this is why I notice it more often than not) I lose my connection to the game (but it recovers in 10 to 20 seconds)

From launchmodem when I have a problem I immediate try to traceroute or ping. Traceroute fails. However I can ping if I want to do that! Easy Login will also fail if I try it.

Are there better DNS servers I am allowed to use? How fast does the modem switch to the backup if the primary is scooters?

FRI JUN 05 22:47:43 2009 DNS Reverse Lookup failed in traceroute for '66.21.240.205'

FRI JUN 05 22:47:43 2009 Modem unable to communicate with DNS Server.(error = 'connection timed out')

FRI JUN 05 22:47:43 2009 DNS Reverse Lookup failed in traceroute for '205.152.152.102'

FRI JUN 05 22:47:43 2009 Modem unable to communicate with DNS Server.(error = 'connection timed out')

FRI JUN 05 22:47:42 2009 DNS Reverse Lookup failed in traceroute for '205.152.152.19'

None of the IPs you gave have reverse names assigned to them. That's why reverse lookups on them failed.

You can use any servers that are open and working for you. Here are a few that have been available for ages:

4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
4.2.2.4

It can take as long as two seconds for a stack to try an alternate DNS server if the primary is down.

DNS Benchmark program can be found here. »www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm

[att=6]

The file above named customdns.zip contains the DNS servers in the picture below. These are the most commonly discussed DNS servers in the AT&T Southeast forum.

1-6 = Level3 DNS servers
7-8 = AT&T Anycast DNS servers
9-12 = BellSouth DNS servers
13-14 = OpenDNS DNS servers

[att=7]

My BellSouth DNS servers acted up on me about a month ago. I switched to the AT&T Anycast DNS servers and have not looked back. I have not had a single problem with the AT&T Anycast DNS servers. The problems I had with the BellSouth DNS servers last month were the straw that broke the camel's back. I don't intend to ever use the BellSouth DNS servers again.

You can run the DNS Benchmark to find the DNS servers that seem the best for you. I recommend the AT&T Anycast DNS servers.

OK.

I have switched to the two anycast servers. I will report back if I still have problems losing DNS.

If it continues, how would I determine if its a problem with the line; even though I can ping during outages; or the modem?

If its the modem, what are good alternatives I can seek out either from AT&T or just buy? I use a wireless setup in house and connect with two different Macs

Of course, you realize that AT&T assimilated the legacy BellSouth DNS servers into their Anycast server farm don't you?

I do my own local DNS resolution, but I forward unresolved external queries to the AT&T Anycast servers. The results from the GRC DNS Nameserver Spoofability Test show that all my external DNS requests currently actually go to legacy BellSouth DNS servers even though my local DNS server explicitly forwards external unresolved DNS queries to the AT&T/SBC Anycast servers 68.94.156.1 and 68.94.157.1.

Here is the list from a recent GRC DNS Nameserver Spoofability Test of the actual servers used in my location when querying the AT&T Anycast servers.

Here are screen captures showing my DNS configuration. You will note that there is no reference anywhere to the legacy BellSouth 205.152.x.y servers, but nonetheless those are the servers that actually do the work when a DNS query is sent to the AT&T Anycast servers. The DNS server at IP address 192.168.10.2 is my local dcs-srv DNS server.

I run my own benchmarks, and I chose the AT&T Anycast servers because my own tests also indicated that they were consistently faster than other DNS servers I tested.

New modem, one the the white AT&T wireless jobs.

This modem reports loss of dsl signal. Whereas the last one never lost its DSL light (perhaps it was wrong and it really was the the line) the new one reports connection lost.

Considering my line test I am not sure where the problem would be. I have fiber to the curb * ono?

So next time I call AT&T what should I ask them to look at? The tech they sent was very good but he isn't a magician. They don't hire them to be experts on everything. (better yet, he read this thread before coming out)

I thought that the old Bellsouth implementation of FTTC did not require a modem at all.

Ah. No wonder integration of AT&T Southeast with the rest is such a pain. I don't think anybody else, inside the family, or outside (Covad, Embarq, Qwest, SBC, Verizon) did things quite like Bellsouth. It's as if Bellsouth was on another planet! :p

Not sure about the compatibility of CDV, or VOIP with alarm systems.

I don't think the Comcast installer will want to re-use the installed RG-6 while satellite is active; he should want to install his own run of RG-6 on the premises. That will avoid interference with satellite. (There are devices to combine satellite feed and cable on a single run of RG-6, but I wouldn't try it. Neither Comcast, nor your satellite provider will support it.)

OK, I am currently using the 2-wire modem with wireless.

I am really trying to avoid ditching DSL and switching to Cable.

So I am looking for configuration advice. Should I assign it DNS servers as I did the Westell?

It currently uses automatic DSL line selection with ATM circut id of blank and 35. Bridged LLC and ATM search enabled.

PPPOE and forced upstream mtu of 1492 are all that are set on the config page.

Re: [Modem] Atlanta area, losing DNS resolution randomly

To begin with, the problem you describe of losing your connection for 10-20 seconds does not sound like a DNS problem. If you are basing that diagnosis on the reverse lookup failures in your modem logs, I get the same failure for those IP addresses.

Check your modem stats when normal and while the problem is happening to see if there is any change in the circuit stats. You might also want to do some testing at the NID to see if the problem persists there (and/or if the stats improve at the NID).

However, if you want to force using something other than the automatically assigned DNS servers, my suggestion would be to use the AT&T/SBC Anycast servers at 68.94.156.1 and 68.94.157.1. I have been using those servers as my primary forwarders for about a year, and I have had no problems with them (they are also the fastest for my location based on my own benchmark tests).

One configuration change I would suggest is to use a VPI/VCI setting of 8/35 instead of _/35.

This sounds like there is an adapter somewhere configured to obtain an IP automatically via DHCP and it is failing to obtain an IP because there is no DHCP server reachable.

This can "lock up the network" while it is hunting and failing, then things return to normal, then the process repeats itself periodically.

The presence of any 169.254.x.y IPs indicates a failure to obtain an IP assignment via DHCP.

I'd verify the absence of such IPs to rule this out.

Possibly, but it also sounds very much like a DSL modem doing a retrain/sync cycle.

This might sound odd, but my connectivity problem got worse Saturday, it was regularly dropping, sometimes every 10 minutes and only seconds.

Yet on Sunday, I tried something someone hinted about on another page... I put a weather site up, one that refreshes every 3 minutes or so automatically. Well, I had only a handful of disconnects on Sunday.

On Tuesday bellsout will be changing the account to 1.5/256 from (6/384) and I hope that a lower speed solves the problem until I can get comcast out to see what it takes to install their stuff.

Re: [Modem] Atlanta area, losing DNS resolution randomly

Just an update.

I am still getting lots of errors on the line. The tech came out and tested the line to the house and it shows good. Inside there was a dsl filter not used right. However that affected throughput only and not connection.

Here is what I am seeing. If I don't use the line it is without errors. In other words, I left my systems offline, no mail or webpages. The 15 minute interval column was clean on system statistics.

Soon as I start using the line I get errors. I get uncorrected dsl errors and many ATM header errors. I also start accumulating dsl seconds in error.

Should I expect 15 minutes to pass without any errors? Why only under load?

If you are not passing any traffic, there will be no errors. There can only data errors if you are actually passing traffic over the connection. The presence of errors on a DSL connection does not necessarily indicate a problem because despite the "D" in DSL standing for "digital", the actual transmission is analog, and data corruption is unavoidable unless you have an extremely clean line. Are you still having problems that impact your use of the circuit, or are you just seeing errors in the modem stats?

Here are the brief stats from my two connections which I consider to be working normally. The errors shown are about a week's accumulation.

I am not sure if that question is directed to me since you replied to yourself, but just in case it was to me, the answer is that I did not format the stats display at all, that is the way it is displayed when I telnet into my Netopia devices and issue the show dsl all command. I do however use the html code shown below to preserve that formatting when posted to this forum:

The horizontal line separating the sections of the stats display is done by using the html code statement <hr>.

It would appear from the above statements that you are still losing you connection rather than just seeing errors in your modem stats.

Have you ever tested at the NID to see if that helps with your problem as I previously suggested?

Have you changed your VPI/VCI setting to 8/35 instead of Auto/35 as I previously suggested? I don't have much experience with the 2wire modem, but I have seen other modems that had problems using automatic VPI/VCI settings.

As for your WoW problems, I will leave that to others to diagnose since I don't do WoW.

I don't think I have much choice, been at this with Bellsouth since the 5th everyday. I am going to hunt down a Motorola cable/wireless router and get Comcast out next week.

Re: [Modem] Atlanta area, losing DNS resolution randomly

I figure its toast. While my connection improved Sunday; Saturday was nearly unusable, it appears Monday it doesn't want to stay stable again.

Going to keep trying Comcast to see if they will come out and install a cable modem. I did stop using the wireless feature of the 2Wire and that seemed to help a bit.

You not having DNS problems. Your modem is losing sync.

Did you connect the 2Wire modem directly to the "Test Jack" located inside of the NID to check things out?

If you did not are you just going to take their word for it when you can test things for yourself?

Re: You not having DNS problems. Your modem is losing sync.

Thank you for the formatting... I need to learn to do it better.

Yeah, I was outside with the tech who came out. We also tested inside and had the same results. He did a rip/replace of the stuff in the box across the street but figured that the problem is most likely at the dslam down the street.

My connection is horrid still. Telephone support is a big no go. Hence I am converting to Comcast on the 3rd of July for both phone and voice. I don't have a real choice here. Bellsouth has proven they cannot or will not fix it. I can't even get refunds!

It dies when I first use it each day and then after 30 seconds or so it recovers and randomly drops.

I appreciate all the help I have received. It helped me realize the best solution is to switch providers. When I found out my three nearest neighbors were not on Bellsouth because of issues it sealed the deal.
