Hi Tmac23,

Do you know what plan you are signed up for? Have you tried doing a speed-test? I recommend doing a speed-test at »speedtest.net and providing the results here before we get into any in-depth troubleshooting. You may want to also send me a PM with your account info so I can check to see what speed the line is in sync at.

Before you can know if you are having a problem there are a few things you have to understand. One is the difference between Kilobytes and Kilobits:

»Optimum Online FAQ »Can you please explain kilobits vs. kilobytes?

The other is how TCP overhead affects your line:

»Ameritech - SBC FAQ »I never see the speed I ordered on speed tests. What a ripoff!!!!

Re: downloading movies/broadband speed

thanx for answering! i am signed up for the basic dsl package. i ran a speed test earlier today and rated 27.1 bps on the download [?]. i learned the difference between bits and bytes today- didn't really know that. i have alot of #s running thru my head, just really trying to find the optimal baud rate for downloading movies from watchmovies.net. 1 movie download is taking me all day. does that sound right?

Hi Tmac23,

Can you send me a PM with you're account info so I can look at the account and check for issues?

There is not optimal speed for "downloading" video's. The faster speed you have the faster the movie will download so the best plan would be whatever the fastest available plan is where you live.

For streaming video it is a little different. Typical you would want at least a 2mb sync rate (before overhead) to stream a regular movie and at least a 4mb sync rate (before overhead) to stream a HD movie. (Somebody that knows more about this please correct me if I am wrong).

Edit: I watch Netflix at home on my 1.5mb DSL but the video quality is very poor and I have to wait for buffering sometimes several times (especially if other people are using the internet)
