Enormous ping time?
I'm wondering what's up with my connection tonight...
Download speed is fine (in fact, a little better than normal), but ping time is 172ms compared to the usual 30ms. And upload speed is a pokey 482 vs. the usual 667.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Are there known problems in Southern California?
Thanks...

Re: Enormous ping time?
Hey CCarson,
With my new loop I wasn't experiencing any bad latency - and as you know - we are both in Redlands. I was getting 28 - 30 ms to the first hop. I downloaded an 8 gig file last night before I went to bed (6 hours - I'm going to have to get used that coming from FIOS) and when I woke up it was completed. I realize that's not a latency thing - but it tells me my connection seems stable...
I was wondering if we could compare modem stats, though - I'm near the E. Highlands and Redlands BLVD intersection - how far is that away from you? Maybe we can do some comparisons to see if there isn't something we can do to milk out some better connectivity... ?
What modem you using?
I'm on the Dlink 2820b...

Re: Enormous ping time?
I'm near Olive and San Mateo streets. I'm using a trusty old SpeedStream 5360 (compliments of Earthlink in 2000). It's dead simple, completely unconfigurable, and has been utterly reliable through the years.
Whatever is going on wasn't just a temporary thing; I'm getting similar stats today.

Anybody know if there's an issue over at Verizon? I'm confident this isn't my inside wiring since I ran a brand-new cat5 drop straight from the NID to my modem with no detours in March. Since that time, the connection has been rock-solid until now.

Actually, I'm getting that now, too:

Re: Enormous ping time?
Hi,
Have either of you tried a different speed-test server then the LA one? Are you showing latency on anything other then the speed-test?
Do you have an example of what you're ping time to our gateway is?

Re: Enormous ping time?
yes, gateway pings are good - 28 ms average.
I really haven't had latency issues except for that one particular server...
