Problems under load

Hi,
I've been experiencing since I've got my line installed around 6 months ago some strange problems when my line is under load.
This happens with different symptoms but at the end they all lead to lose internet connection in some form, for at least some seconds.
In the beginning I had my DSL-modem connected to an airport extreme n, and whenever I had some youtube video, or it could be some heavy download, I noticed that I got disconnected from the PPoE.
I thought the problem was with the airport and I moved to a WRT54G. This time I don't have disconnects but I notice that I still have internet disruption every time I watched a youtube video.
Symptoms are: pings start increasing, until packets get lost. I measured that around 15-20 packets are lost, after around 30". But this changes all the time.
My speed test work and give me good, even though not the promised bandwidth.
I tried different plugs and the behavior is always the same.

Re: Problems under load

Hi giubeppe -

Have you tried to remove the routers all together and connect the computer directly to the DSL modem to see if you still see if the issue persists?

Thanks

Re: Problems under load

Hi,
thanks for replying. I've done that test long ago, but I'm going to repeat it again later tonight and add to this thread, just to be sure. I'm just very surprised because with my former internet provider I didn't have any problems with the same configuration.

Re: Problems under load

Hi George,
I connected directly to the dsl modem and I ran some more tests.
Things are even weirder.

When I go to youtube and stream a video I lose connection every around 30 seconds. Note that the PPoE connection is stable, I just lose packets and cannot go anywhere. This is the final report

>--- 4.2.2.1 ping statistics ---
>162 packets transmitted, 129 packets received, 20% packet loss
>round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 12.050/15.803/66.372/8.199 ms

If I then download a large file (I'm using the new java from Apple, around 80 Megs)... everything is fine

>--- 4.2.2.1 ping statistics ---
>104 packets transmitted, 104 packets received, 0% packet loss
>round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 12.862/66.821/75.078/15.465 ms

Same, with another large file:

> 136 packets transmitted, 136 packets received, 0% packet loss
>round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 12.955/182.917/927.546/267.694 ms

And if I watch a video with a flash player, from another site, still ok:

> 167 packets transmitted, 167 packets received, 0% packet loss
> round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 12.764/70.642/76.519/10.126 ms

To make the test more relevant I ran the test again on youtube. Packets lost again.

> 51 packets transmitted, 47 packets received, 7% packet loss
> round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 12.296/15.074/36.354/4.308 ms

It looks to me that it's not router relevant, and that it seems to affect youtube more than other sites.
I also note during load that pings get to around 70-80ms instead of the usual 15ms.
All the same happens if I ping other places. I'm using 4.2.2.1 as I found it reliable from work.
I measured speed and I have 7.2 Downstream and 800 kbps upstream (my contract if for 8/1)

What can I do?

Thanks
Giuseppe

Re: Problems under load

Thanks for the update. Can you run a continuous ping to your gateway IP address without the router connected and see if you drop any packets to the gateway itself?

What type of DSL modem are you using? Have you tried replacing the Ethernet cable and the phone cable that the modem are connected to?

Thanks

Re: Problems under load

which one is the gateway? This is my traceroute to 4.2.2.1. I guess is 66.134.167.1, correct?

> 1 h-66-134-167-1-static.lsanca54.covad.net (66.134.167.1) 14.880 ms 14.280 ms 13.762 ms
> 2 192.168.33.113 (192.168.33.113) 13.511 ms 14.785 ms 14.420 ms
> 3 unknown.Level3.net (63.215.86.253) 14.563 ms 18.916 ms 14.065 ms
> 4 vnsc-pri.sys.gtei.net (4.2.2.1) 14.668 ms 15.197 ms 14.324 ms

I've also tried replacing Ethernet cable, phone cable, different phone plugs etc...

I'll run the continuous ping once I know the gateway address.
By the way, how come I have a private address 192.168.33.113 in the middle of my traceroute?

Re: Problems under load

I checked and DSL Modem is BritePort 8012-G1.
The lost packets in ping affect both the gateway (66.134.67.1) and the remote ip.
Thanks

Can you please send over your DSL Extreme account information via PM? I would like to take a look from this end.

Thanks

Re: Problems under load

Thanks for sending over your account information. I took a look on the line see great line readings and that traffic is passing normally. Here are your line readings for your reference.

Actual Port Speed: 8000 kbps Downstream / 1024 kbps Upstream
Margin: 23.5 dB Downstream / 13.0 dB Upstream

Can you do a continuous ping to 66.134.67.1 and let me know the results.

Thanks

Re: Problems under load

I noticed that my gateway should be 66.134.167.1 instead of 66.34.67.1.
So I ran the ping test (playing a youtube video) with both... same results. The ping starts dropping packets after around 35 packets.
I start wondering if this has to do with the PPoE or the DSL modem, as connecting with the airport extreme caused a connection dropped, while with the wrt54g and the direct connection just a ping drop. I'm also wondering why it affects youtube (and other google sites) more than others.

Re: Problems under load

If you run a continuous ping to the gateway without having anything else running in the background do you see any dropped packets?

Thanks
