[Availability] DSL/T-carrier in Charlotte without Placing Order?

Hello Folks,

Our CEO currently has a Road Runner Business Class connection that is on an awfully overloaded node so his VoIP phone quality is terrible. We've gone round and round and we're at the point where we're just going to investigate pulling a DSL line in to dedicate for his VoIP phone.

However, here's the sticking point. He has phone service through a company called ACN, but he is served out of a Bellsouth CO. (»/coinfo/clli/CHRLNCSH) I tried to input his phone number on AT&T's website, but it says, "Hey, that's not an AT&T phone number. We can only tell you if service is available if you actually place an order and move your phone service to us."

Would I have better luck calling in, or is the website saying that because they really would need a truck roll to find out if he's serviceable?

If I didn't want to go DSL or if it's not available, what would a 256Kbps or so fractional T go for these days? Should I call AT&T Business and see what solutions they can offer like perhaps some sort low-speed SDSL?

You might be able to place an order for Standalone DSL without phone service.

WTF? This is not customer service. "We can only tell you if service is available if you actually place an order and move your phone service to us" AT&T/Bellsouth have been merged now for quite a while. I think I'd quickly bypass that company and find another option. Vote with your money and find someone who actually cares about their customers. :)

The AT&T/BellSouth qualification tool only works with their own phone numbers- this should not be a real surprise. You're only dealing with a website.

You can use the phone number of a next door neighbor , as an example, to get an idea if the service is available in that neighborhood. But be aware that that is not a guarantee that service will be available for a variety of legitimate reasons.

We just got off the phone and it looks promising so far. Their pricing does not scale equally with the speed packages though does it?

768Kbps = $19.99
1.5Mbps = $37
3.0Mbps = $42
6.0Mbps = $47

The jump from 768Kbps to 1.5 surprised us. Wow.

I think it's skewed like that - steep going in minimal - to cover the cost of the line. Either that or you could say the value is higher up and the bottom is a rip off.

The lineshared dsl is the same way
768Kbps = $19.99
1.5Mbps = $32.95
3.0Mbps = $37.95
6.0Mbps = $42.95

I think the price you show for 768Kbps = $19.99 line shared is wrong. I think it's 5 dollars cheaper.

$19.95 is the price for 768 in all 22 states

So you are saying line shared and stand alone are the same price?

Well then, it really is a rip off.

I'm on the $10 line shared plan until January or whenever the $10 deal ends. At that point I will disconnect the phone - I don't need it.

I think the dsl lite price will rise to about $32

Well, I'm certainly not going to pay that for it.

Won't the direct price would be about the same as the lineshared cost
