[Services] transferring phone service and awaiting DSL problems
OK, after spending several hours on the phone with multiple AT&T representatives today, I'm more than a bit frustrated and confused. Maybe someone has some insight to offer with my situation.
I'm transferring phone service from my old apartment to my new home (new construction in an established neighborhood). Also signed up for DSL and DirecTV. Plan was for my service to be switched over on 6/1/09. No indications at first from AT&T that this would be a problem. After a couple of minor hiccups I had a working phone line in my new home and the old number had been successfully transferred over from my apartment. I could dial out, receive calls, etc.
DSL was going to be delayed though. The AT&T rep said my neighborhood was at capacity and a new terminal would have to be installed. In the meantime, they were temporarily patching my phone service through another location (I don't remember the exact terminology). Of course they have since postponed the projected installation date for the terminal 3 times now (currently out to 7/2/09), and I'm starting to wonder if they're just stringing me along. I can live without high speed internet for a while though, and they told me I could at least set up a backup dialup connection, BUT...
Today I come home and there's no dialtone. I call AT&T and they act as if there's no way I could have had any phone service at all until the new terminal is installed. I explain to them that this would make sense except that I DID have service for at least two weeks until today, so someone must have actively disconnected it somehow. They imply that I must be wrong, that either I never had phone service in my new home, or that I was never told by AT&T that I'd be getting a temporary connection. Toward the end, they tried to tell me that the lines were probably "crossed accidentally" resulting in my getting service that I wasn't supposed to. Then they "repaired" it, which is why I no longer have a dial tone. What!?!
Anyway, the AT&T reps today didn't really seem to understand what I was getting at. I can understand a delay in establishing service but can't undersand receiving service then having it removed. They put me on hold and apparently spoke with the engineers 3 times, but things didn't get any clearer. I asked to talk to the engineers directly, or the rep's supervisor. They didn't go for this though. Right now I'm left with no phone service, no DSL, no dialup backup, no way to set up my security system, a rapidly shrinking number of cell phone minutes, and a tentative installation date in almost 2 weeks that I have no confidence in at all.

I honestly don't know what to say about all of this. It's sad how screwed up things have gotten at companies like this over the years.
I don't doubt that all of this happened at all, when we were still living in our house a neighbor moved and the cable company turned off our cable instead of the neighbor's. They didn't even seem to care that they made the mistake and made us feel like there was something wrong with us being kinda mad at them for making the mistake.

They pretty much did the same thing to my daughter here. It only took one call to the SC Public Service Commission and she had service restored in 2 days. I suggest you call the Alabama PSC and let them handle it.

Well, I took your advice and e-mailed the Alabama PSC. I received a call from AT&T the next day saying everything would be installed tomorrow. Sure enough I am now up and running, fully a week before their projected date. Could be a coincidence... but I doubt it. Thanks for the advice!
