[General] Is it against the AUP to run a personal web server?

Is it a violation of the Acceptable Use Policy to run a web server to serve up a small site with a blog or something similar?

I found this here: »my.att.net/csbellsouth/s/editori···thorized

"Reselling Service without express written consent from BellSouth, or offering any information service using such accounts, such as running an e-mail server, Web server, FTP server, or proxy server is prohibited."

Does that only apply if you're providing web hosting for users besides yourself? I don't plan to use much traffic with this, and the maximum upload is only 50 KB/s anyway... Would they mind?

You have pointed to an old legacy BellSouth FastAccess AUP. If you have already migrated to the ATT/Yahoo platform, that AUP no longer applies. Also, after 06/30/2009 all legacy BellSouth FastAccess users will be automatically migrated to the ATT/Yahoo platform (some of them kicking and screaming). At that time the AT&T/Yahoo AUP at »www.att.com/aup will be the AUP in force.

I see no prohibition on running a public server in the ATT/Yahoo AUP other than the usual ISP boilerplate designed to allow the ISP to boot anyone off the network who does anything illegal or anything to degrade the service. If you are really worried about it ask your attorney to examine it.

FWIW, I operate public http, ftp and email servers on my two AT&T DSL connections.

How do I know if I've been migrated to the AT&T platform? Will my internet fill up with suck?

Do you have further information about this move to the "ATT/Yahoo platform"? Will those of us who have had the same static IP for years be affected? Price changes? Routing changes that will change performance?

I'm sure many of us want to know...

Re: [General] Is it against the AUP to run a personal web server

I will note that I've been running a small web server on my Bellsouth DSL since 2004 and no one has ever complained or said a thing.

I suspect they put this language in the AUP so they have a weapon to use again those who *do* engage in naughty activities using their servers.

Of course, YMMV, but all the people I know who have run servers on Bellsouth, myself included, have been trouble-free for years. Just use common sense.

If you mean such things as facebook, myspace, twitter, et al, it already has done so. :hmm:

All I know about the forced migration is what I have read in posts in this forum by someone claiming to work for AT&T and by some reporting to have received an email informing them of the scheduled forced migration on 06/30/2009.

I already migrated to the ATT/Yahoo platform shortly after the original announcement that it was available last year (partly because of the less restrictive AT&T TOS/AUP). I have experienced no ill effects from the migration. The only substantive change I had was to use pop.att.yahoo.com to receive email instead of the previous mail.bellsouth.net or fpostoffice.isp.att.net servers. Sending email can still be done using the legacy att.net and bellsouth.net servers, or you can use smtp.att.yahoo.com (I still use the legacy mail.bellsouth.net server because of some restrictions in using non matching "from" and "reply-to" addresses with smtp.att.yahoo.com). Some have reported problems with using the att.yahoo.com email servers, but and all the problems I saw posted were because the individual did not follow instructions, not with the service itself.

Here is a link to one such thread discussing the forced migration: »[Services] FYI: BELLSOUTH AND ATT DOMAIN USERS USING MAIL.BELLSO

Here is a link to an AT&T help file describing the migration: »support.att.net/newhome

Disclaimer: YMMV
