TELUS Domain Reverse Lookup

Hello All!
I have the telus server 2.5 package which allows for personal domains. About 2 weeks ago i changed the personal domain from the standard sIPADDRESS.bc.hsia.telus.net to my own one NAME.mydomain.com when i do a reverse lookup on my ip address or domain name, is comes back with two answers, one being the correct one and the other ali#####y##vc.bc.hsia.telus.net (obviously replacing the # with a number). My guess is that Telus' DNS is not replicating correctly, but i am not sure which is why i am asking. My question is basically what the hell can i do? Thanks so much for your help. It is rather frustating when you want a domain to look professional (although you can always see that the ip goes back to telus. Oh Well). Thanks everyone.

Re: TELUS Domain Reverse Lookup

Hi clarkek, yeah mine is basically the same too....In effect what you have is 2 different ways to get to the same place. One is a "name" and the other is a "number".

Recently in the US it is now possible to keep the same Telco number no matter what you are on, cell, wire, sat etc. Generally we have had for many years a given name and a specific Telco number for our identity so others can contact us. The 'Net provides a fixed name for those that want one. Some folks have a fixed number (IP) others are Dynamic. Question is, do you really want/need a fixed "number" on the 'Net? Your current "number" can be found by yourself, others elsewhere on the 'Net generally focus on using the "name" provided.

I am still looking for a good answer to that in light of the "Identity Theft" that can occur these days.

Clarkek

The reverse lookup will always show up as Telus, as you don't 'own' the IP address - Telus does.

However, this should have minimal impact on your domain actually resolving correctly. It's very common to have multiple 'names' assigned to a single IP.

As long as you can do a lookup on your domain name, and get the right IP, it should work fine. If that isn't working right, then you need to look to your DNS provider (for the domain name, not for your surfing) and get them to fix it.

If you want to post your domain name, or IM it to me, I'll gladly take a look and see what I can see.

Re: TELUS Domain Reverse Lookup

With the static plans you can set your own reverse dns to whatever you like, however most services on the internet that would look at the reverse dns will not use it unless there is a matching forward record to the same IP (ie IRC)

Re: TELUS Domain Reverse Lookup

It should have only ONE PTR entry, not two.. somethings wrong with Telus DNS record somewhere..

For instance, mine reverses correctly:

peter@devil peter[0]$ host 207.6.25.211
211.25.6.207.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer hybrid.pfak.org.

So somewhere along the lines, they've screwed up somewhere.. phone them up and ask them.
