Can browse, but not D/L , I need tech help please!
I have A speedstream 5100b modem on Windows XP Pro. I just got DSL last week and from the beginning I have been having major problems. I can browse OK usually, as long as they are small, easy to load pages. But anytime I try to download, no matter what browser or program I use, It will freeze my connection for a minute or so, then release it. This is very frustrating and SBC tech support will not help me on the phone. They say it is not their problem. Also the guys I have talked to can't speak English and it's very frustrating. I have tried everything I know to do, including formatting my HDD and starting from scratch. I am desperate, Please help. :(:mad:
All my lights on the modem stay green, and reboot/power cycle does not help. I have a updated telco box outside, and I have no noise on my phone, also I have tried different computers, LAN cards, and cables to no avail.:(:mad:

Thanks, but I tried that already, all it did was make my computer take forever to boot. It did not fix my problem.

It must be something in the 5100b then. Look thru the setup and see if anything catches your eye.
I have never seen that fix make a computer take longer to boot up. That's interesting.

Rare but and old problem. You don't need to bother ADSL Guy because the problem is actually on your side. The solution may look strange but it works.

Did you try a second NIC? Move either NIC to a different slot?

They are right, its your computer that is acting up.. You must find out what the problem is step by step or hire a technician which will not come cheap. Since I do this as a hobby, i can pretty much fix anything from defective component to software problem. Are you sure that you have enough space to download the files? also empty your temporary internet file onces in a while to save some space as well which can also make your computer very slow if you don't clean it out. It is very possible there is a virus infection if you did not update all the patches from microsoft, which even firewall alone cannot stop the worms from crawling into your pc namely msblast.f that I have gotten recently and it did exactly as you described.

This could be anything so it won't be an easy picnic for you, my computer would freeze up alot too just a week ago and it took me 3 days to figure it out by replacing memory, cpu, video card, formatted hd, and even lan card, only to find out later that it was the motherboard gone bad due to my suspicion. It does not reboot anymore, i have to poweroff the powersupply for it to come back on.
Being a tech is no fun job especially when you do not know exactly what the problem is and its like guessing all the time.

Yes I have tried different NIC's and slots, I even tried a different motherboard, hard drive and memory. I scanned for viruses with the latest norton and found nothing.

Well there is a very rare instance if the problem being on the DSLAM, but it is very rare. It is normally on the user side. The problem now is convenciencing SBC side to change that card. If anyone can do it it is the techs here. This would be the first case in the SWBell region where the problem would be on the SBC side. I have seen it before in the PacBell region though.

Not entirely accurate. I have had one client in San Antonio
a few years back in a very similar situation and that
one turned out to be the DSLAM.
It took over 4 months of head slamming to convince
SBC to actually send a tech out there and fix it.
I'd say 97% of the time, freezing problems like this
are on the customer's side but there is still that
"other 3%" sometimes.

Now that you have that out of the way, your last resort is to RMA the modem that you are using or use any spare modem if you have any to test to see if it still does the same thing..after that, the next thing would be your router/switch/hub acting up. btw there are uplink and 1x on port 1 of your switch/hub, never use both as they are shared.

Is your connection freezing or just unable to download? I'm reading it as only unable to download files.
Is the virus scan you ran on your PC or an online scan? Some of the newer viruses will stealth itself from the updates once your already infected. Online scans will help.
To prove or disprove your PC I would try to get another PC, borrow one if necessary, to test your connection.

I agree with CCCMTech, the best thing to do right now is find another PC to test your dsl on. If you are still having the same problems, then we can move on to troubleshooting other devices.

Are their any best online virus scan that you would recommend? i use microtrend exclusively but am willing to try out others as well if they are better at detecting newer viruses.

i just used panda and I was infected again, what gives? this is getting crazier all the time as I had just cleaned out yesterday plus updated all patches from MS

just remember, there is a time between when a virus comes out and when there is an update for it...not all updates come out before their exploited...
in other words, virus scan and windows updates are only good for known viruii/exploits.
Stinger is a nice utility too for the w32 variants.

I keep getting new viruses every single day, with different variation..firewall doesn't seem to help much either since I am getting it anyway.
Usually I am too lazy to scan it or don't think its worth the time but now i do :)

This is a known problem, been there done that several times, the virus thing is a very far outside chance. But best checked at some point anyway if the original poster doesn't already scan for viruses.
CCCMTech, I have never seen it on this board is what I meant, I don't work for SBC so don't have access to other problems reports. ;)

Viruses do more than most people realize and more are infected than realize...

I tried an online scan, but that requires downloading and therefore froze up. I did run NAV from a backup cd and came out clean though.

I would still recomment trying to get another PC, as I would almost guarantee it is SOMETHING in that PC preventing it.

OMG!!! Bad modem? Even the tech here was doubting about it, lol. I say its just pure luck. RMA is not hard, just call SBC tech dept. and tell them your modem is bad and will give you RMA# so you can then have it shipped back at any local store that ships UPS like office depot, the one I find most convenient. Sorry if it took you this long to nail it, if somebody would just tell you the modem to begin with, would have saved you quite a bit of headaches and frustration.
Every time somebody has a problem with connection they always think its their computer or their lines gone bad, Hmmm its not that easy if you don't have a second modem to test and confirm that it really isn't the modem acting up.;)

Modems don't go bad that often, but when they do a spare is indispensable! Either that or a good friend who uses SBC DSL and has a working modem. :D ;)

Don't just call them and tell them it's bad; make sure that you explain the overall problem and what you've tried, THEN say that you had a friend bring over another modem, and then it works fine. Be patient, as they still have to go through some steps before sending in a request, but the part about replacing with another modem and it now works fine should help expedite a replacement.
That was almost like a 678 error....ugh!!!!
Now you have a better idea of ALL the possibilities when there is a problem, and why techs have to ask the questions that they do....

Before you call and try and get the modem replaced, I would be interested in seeing if you can dl if you setup PPPoE on the computer instead of the modem. This change is pretty easy, just go to the mdm GUI, 192.168.0.1 then Advanced>PPP Location. After changing to "PPP is on the computer", make a PPPoE connection in XP.

I've been through it before and I am telling him exactly as it is, no need to give too much details. Its not like they need all the unnecessary info anyway, RMA cost you nothing to ship back and if it still bad after he gets it back then he will know its something not set right on the modem. 5100b is basically just a router/firewall built in with advanced statistics. Because of this, they are more likely to have defect then a 5100a, which is what I am using and no problem so far. rma'ing is as easy as 1-2-3, hell I may even find it enjoyable if I do it often enough. :):):)

BTW the old 5100 (with 4 lights) is the one I am using now and it works superbly. I have to give it back soon tho :(
