Scam Alert: Juice Boost
The 2Mbps spam curing wonder technology
(old news - 10:27AM Friday Aug 06 2004)
tags: trouble · spam · scam
From the scam of a lifetime department: A spammer in our Broadband Tweaks forum is pushing a referral scam service called Juice Boost, which promises users 2Mbps speeds for free, anywhere there's a phone line, using "State-of-the-art data compression, byte stream and ultimate data burst technology". The service also promises you'll never see a blank page, a piece of spam, or a worm again, or the company will pay you.

While our users might smell a rat immediately, would your parents? Grandparents? According to the website, the technology, which is currently in beta, "Works with any PC or MAC of the lowest specification believable". So those of you still running a 133Mhz relic won't be excluded from the party.

Of course it's simply dial-up compression software with a coat of paint at the foundation of a pyramid scam, but the promises made by the technology include some of the most outlandish and amusing claims we've ever seen.

While users who visit the site won't see these claims, users who respond to a particular referral code - usually provided in e-mail or message board spam - will. We've omitted that code to keep the referrer from making any money for links. You can however buy their product on e-bay if getting ripped off was on your action-item list for today.

Here's some of the promises you'll see when you log in from a referrer:

"Speed up a dialup connection to over broadband speeds for FREE."

"Speed up a broadband connection to 2MB for FREE."

"Save money by disconnecting broadband and using JUICE for FREE."

"Make your Internet experience more pleasurable."

"You will never see another dead, blank or irrelevant page ever again and if you do, we will pay you £500 GBP*."

"You will NOT get another spam email EVER, but if you do we will pay you £100 GBP* in compensation."

"You are guaranteed to get a minimum connection speed of 2MB with 100% uptime. If we fail to meet either or both we will pay you £500 GBP* per failure."

"YOU will NEVER receive a virus or worm in your email inbox again as we operate up to the millisecond software to stop the same, but if you do get one we will pay you £500 GBP* compensation."

"JUICE is able to block every porn and adult site on the Internet if you choose to filter it and if we fail you we will pay you £200 GBP* per reported instance."

"That's how confident JUICE is," the site proclaims. "We can STOP your child from chatting to people who pretend to be children in chat rooms by using amazing breakthrough IP filtration and parenthesis technology."

Parenthesis technology! Where do we sign up?

The site reads

like it was written by a child. In another thread this site came up...this is my favorite line from the site.

said by Juice:
JUICE is a software download which utilises a unique 23 patent approved compression technology that increases your existing Internet connection speed to way past faster than broadband.

State-of-the-art data compression, byte stream and ultimate data burst technology now guarantees every Internet user an unbelievable lightening connection speed of 2MB.

Pyramid scheme

I just love this part (from the scammer's post in the Broadband Tweaks forum):

quote:
Faster than broadband and available worldwide without cost (yes completly FREE). Give it away and get $48 USD every time!

So not only don't I have to pay for it, but I'll get $48 for each friend I scam convince to sign up? Where are they getting the cash to pay me from since I'm guessing my friend's would be getting the service for free as well.

The sad thing is that some people will fall for this and not wonder just why the phone companies aren't providing 2Mbps over a normal phone line. If it was technically possible, you can bet that the phone companies would be raking in the cash from this.

I just sent in an abuse report to EBay (and referred them here for more information). Let's see how long until his auction is taken down.

:huh:I can understand scepticism, but remember when the internet first came out? The opposition was a whole lot bigger and more disbelieving.
:huh:I cannot see how they make anything from it if there is no truth in it, the website alone is a good piece of complex work and it has a membership database, it must have cost a fair bit to set up. They have a very strict anti-spam rule and one of my friends has already been kicked off for spamming.
:huh:If its a scam, why? It costs nothing to join, nothing to promote, and you earn money. :)Its no different from mobile companies paying emloyees a wage and commission, (comet customers get about £40 commision per big sell!) and this way Juice are getting straight through to their target audience as well as paying them (have you seen how much conventional promoting costs these companies?!). :DWhat a way of advertising!
I'm still slightly sceptic myself, but as long as its not costing more than a couple of pounds to promote, i'm sticking with the chance of getting the over £400 in my account.
Have a go, you might get something from it.
Good luck

How is it a scam? "You will never see another dead, blank or irrelevant page ever again and if you do, we will pay you £500 GBP*." ----- anyone with half a brain knows this would break them in a week.

"You are guaranteed to get a minimum connection speed of 2MB with 100% uptime. If we fail to meet either or both we will pay you £500 GBP* per failure." ----- 2MB... do you know how fast that is??? never happen. (anyone who knows the implications of the "MB" in this claim knows what I'm saying). This is not to mention the fact that connections go down, it's inevitable.

"YOU will NEVER receive a virus or worm in your email inbox again as we operate up to the millisecond software to stop the same, but if you do get one we will pay you £500 GBP* compensation." ----- Sure, if it blocks all message attachments. That's the only way you can make that claim.

Point is, anyone who asks such a question as "How do we know it's a scam?", doesn't have much knowledge and/or experience with the internet. I'm not putting anyone down by making this remark, just suggesting you do your homework before defending an obvious scumbag.

Re: Yeh, most probably a hoax but nothing to lose.

I see you guys are running into the same problems we have at scam.com forum. Some ppl still don’t see why this is 100% scam no other realistic options. Granted there is nothing you can do about some of them. I would like to post this black and white list we have made just to make it all to clear. The technical issues have been compressed to just two points since many users at scam.com don’t understand the issues anyway.

The complete list so far:

pro
1.

con
1. Tech compression is unreasonable.
2. Sideline techs equally unreasonable. (Blocking spam, 404, etc...)
3. MLM (Some think there are legit MLM companies but regardless it can not be argued that most of them are not legit.)
4. Lots of $$$$$$$ on the page.
5. Signing affiliates is bigger then the actual product.
6. The money they would have to pay out.
7. Theft of a website and implied relation to a known company.
8. That known company stating they are not related and stating they are taking legal action.
9. Lack of security on the website.
10. Amateur website code.
11. Cheap web server, not even their own.
12. Vapourware.
13. Lack of contact. (E-mail, and telephone)
14. Fake business address.
15. Constant drilling that there is “no risk” or is “free” every 4th or 5th line.
16. Lack of legalese such as fine print and language like “up to 2mb.”
17. Lack of hard information about the site.
18. A business model that would require the ability to stay profitable with 80 million free for life accounts.
19. No registration with Dunn & Bradstreet.
20. No evidence of incorporation.
21. No evidence of 23 patents. (Though technically even if they did, patents are not a pro)
22. SKBi programming group doesn’t seem to exist. (Mind control site has wrong caps on abbreviation, google doesn't list any other likely candidates.)

For details or clarification on any of these, feel free to ask.

Second, if you seriously thought this was a scam would you not have been better trying to educate this person and the rest of us instead of just slagging them off without any facts.

If it's a scam we want facts not a gun put to our heads, we are not all as clued up as you superior beings! Next, why is it some of you have now begun to sign up under the pretence you want to see if the checks are real, and if they are real will you retract your statements? Of course if they are'nt you will be right AGAIN.

In fact you can't loose, you'll either be paid for something you said was crap, or you can say I told you so.

Sorry but ADSL doesn't actually use "Dial up" it uses the same wiring, but it operates at a different frequency to the standard phone network, and is a Digital signal as the name implies. A "Dial up" connection uses the standard telephone network sending Analogue signals using a modem (MOdulator DEModulator) to convert the digital data to an analogue signal and convert it back to digital data at the other end. Telephone calls are Analogue signals. This Juice Boost is a total scam, there are no two ways about it.

One way of ensuring you never receive SPAM under the SPAM acts, is to sign you up to a service that makes you agree in fine print, to allow all kinds of riff-raff to send you email as a "associate" of the service, and not be able to cry SPAM anymore.

Re: Broadband on dialup IS possible, it's called ADSL!

Broadband is ADSL. Broadband is the marketing term used because it was realised that most people could not cope with asymmetric digital subscriber line. This scam just proves they were right. As Barnum said "There's one born every minute." I guess he underestimated the numbers.

There are other variations of broadband sdsl, vdsl ad infinitum but they are all variations on the technology.

A thought occurs. If this had been launched to go live on 1st April everyone would have smelled it immediately. Therefore move it 6 months and you have the world's biggest gotcha! Let's hope it is no more malicious than this. However it has still been a very successful human generated virus with all the emails it has created.

What do you need? A PC, webspace and some technical knowhow to create a site which most 10 year olds and up have these days.

Oh, come on look at it. It's identical to the Juiceboosted site except it's green instead of yellow. If it ain't the same guys, it's someone else that's nicked their idea, their website layout, their graphics, their terminology . . . .

It's just the more believable version of JuiceBoosted. They finally cottoned on that people realised JB really was too good to be true. This is the not-quite-so-good version to catch the slightly more wary.

Re: old 9600 kgps

JuiceBoosted got their layout from Onspeed.

Onspeed and JuiceB are not related at all except that they both claim to boost your speed.

Onspeeds claims are a lot different then JuiceB, Notice:

Onspeed claims up to 5x faster. Thus your speed is your modem speed x5 for mostly text pages. They state that they do not compress pictures, exe's, etc...

JuiceB claims 40x, and a minimum speed of 2000kbps. If you have a 9600 baud modem, (the minimum) that is 215x some odd compression. This site implies that the compression works the same regardless of content. (IE: Even a JPG will compress 215x)

And it doesn' end there. JuiceB operates from a kind of PO box. JuiceB has re-directed phone numbers. JuiceB doesn't even have their own server. In short, JuiceB and Onspeed are totally different animals.

Re: Yeh, most probably a hoax but nothing to lose.

PLEEEEEASE ! Anyone else who says "I've nothing to lose" ignores the fact that you will be giving personal details, which anyone from Marketing to Fraud Detection will tell you is a valuable commodity in itself, and if you can't verify the legitimacy of a company like this you will find it difficult to judge how much personal information they will obtain from your computer, either legally or illegally, or indeed be able to control the way in which they use your information.

Somewhere along the line, I missed this.
This post was previous to my revelation of the Amsterdam address, and from an anonymous source it appears.
I struggle to comprehend. Is anyone wiser than me as to where Smiler48 originated from?
