Edges closer as company strikes new deals

For some time now, the folks behind Bit Torrent have been working on plans to launch their own legit video store, pitching their technology as a legitimate distribution medium to major Hollywood studios. In order to gain the industry's trust, the company has been desperately trying to shed the "piracy tool" stigma.

This "legitimization push" has included embedding Bit Torrent in consumer-grade routers and pushing the idea of cached content to ISPs in order to prevent Bit Torrent traffic throttling. They've been so concerned with their image that they've even stopped using the term p2p, replacing it with "peer-assisted."

The video store push was delayed after all of this work netted just one Hollywood distribution deal. Things are looking up, however. The company is now announcing a slew of new deals with entertainment studios and TV networks. The Bit Torrent video store launch shouldn't be too far behind.

XBOX 360 Media Connect

Throw up 720p WMV-HD files that I can play on my XBOX-360 without needing transcoding and I'll gladly throw you $6 a movie.

I wouldnt touch that wmv hd movie in my 360. I cant support a codec with drm. Wont ever happen on this pc.

Yes... it's great for distribution.

The other question is what you can get on it, and on what terms.

On the mostly illegal side of the tracks you can get music, movies, TV and more, in standard, vendor-independent codecs and formats, with no DRM and no advertising. The downside is a low but non-zero probability of getting sued or prosecuted.

On the legit side - what's it going to be? If they offer the same thing except legally and for money, I'll gladly be their customer. Pay a few dollars, get an unrestricted XviD/mp3 file, burn it to a CD and enjoy on the TV. That would be perfect.

But I suspect that's not what they have in mind. I predict proprietary codecs/formats and DRM. Those things make it, not just inferior, but completely worthless to me and many others.

WMV-HD videos don't have to have DRM. I currently transcode divx/xvid from torrent sites to WMV-HD and then stream them to my XBOX-360 using media connect software.

I don't mind DRM on rentals, but if I'm `buying` it, I don't want DRM getting in the way of my fair use rights.

Like it or hate it, very little content will be legally released by the man without DRM.

Hopefully the next dashboard update will support divx/xvid codecs out of the box.

That's the crux of the problem. The "MAN" seems to think that they can charge MORE for something that is worth LESS just because it's 'new'. The RIAA did it when it was tapes vs. CD's. The tapes were about 4.00 cheaper than the CD.

If I'm going to PAY for a movie, I have very specific criteria the MAN needs to meet

#1: I want the same or better quality than the DVD.
#2: If I don't get the extras, why should I pay MORE for the same thing?
#3: If I have to pay for the media/storage to watch it, deduct it from the price.

So, to summarize the price I'm willing to pay.

Start @ 19.99 for a movie. Subtract 5.00 because I don't get any extras. Subtract 2.00 for the blank DVD. Subract 5.00 for the bandwidth cost. And give it to me in DVD or higher resolution.

Net Cost I'll pay for a downloaded movie : 19.99-5-5-2=7.99. Now subract 2.00 for the annoyance factor. And you get. ding ding 5.99 per movie!

I am not really sure how the Bit Torrent video store will really be successful.

I am no bit torrent expert on how it works but it seems to me that if a company is making money off of a video or whatever file they are selling why would the user do anything be set the torrent to leech mode. What is the incentive to the user to share their bandwidth for uploading to anyone else? If this is the same crap drm files that other online video stores sell why use the slower torrent model and tie up your own uploading ability while you get the file? Also will the download be faster then a regular torrent file? On any file I have ever gotten off of a torrent the speed I have gotten is between 80kb/sec to 120kb/sec down while I am uploading at around 100kb/sec. Granted I have only done a few torrents so maybe that is not a normal speed for the dl but if that is what you get from this why would you do it when you could dl direct from a site at, in my case, 1mb/sec or faster?

It seems to me a video store with non drm content at less then what I can buy it at a Best Buy or Wal-Mart and at good dl speeds would be the only model that would work for selling videos, and if it is for rentals it would need to be also at good speed and equal or less then price then you would pay at the local video store.

Otherwise it doesnt seem like a very good plan.

Time to blow my own trumpet again

Peer Impact is a commercial peer to peer network that gives it customers up to 5% in the way of a system credit every time they upload a piece of paid for content depending on how much they upload .

I'm assuming Bittorrent like Peer Impact will have its own multiple seed servers ,providing bandwidth when the torrent speeds are not up to par with the swarms maximum speed .I'm also sure that Bittorrents movies will be available in progressive download mode so you can watch the movie before its finished downloading .

I do. I stole the car I'm driving and the house I'm living in. I steal utilities, groceries, and even christmas presents for my family. The computer I'm typing this on and the wireless internet I'm using ---- Both Stolen. People who pay for anything are suckers.

Try lowering your upload rate some so you don't over saturate the connection and slow down your download acks. Uploading at full speed on BT isn't a good idea even with cable HSI, but if you're not d/l anything or surfing the web then it's ok to.

Give me a 100% uncapped, unblocked, unthrottled, and stable 100/100 meg symmetrical interweb connection with really low pings to my apartment for cheap and I'll go away! :)

Yes but the "Screw You" downloads have been remastered in genuine simulated stereo, and re-colorized in life like black and white. ;)
