Comcast Wireless Broadband Hits Atlanta - And completes San Francisco DOCSIS 3.0 deploymentAnd completes San Francisco DOCSIS 3.0 deployment 04:04PM Tuesday Jul 28 2009 by Karl Bode tags: prices · competition · business · alternatives · bandwidth · cable · consumers · wireless Comcast dropped two announcements on us this afternoon. First, the company says they're expanding their new Clearwire-powered Mobile WiMax service Comcast2go into the Atlanta market. As we discussed when the service premiered last month in Portland, Comcast is slowly following up behind existing Clearwire deployments, which so far exist in Portland, Atlanta, Las Vegas, and Baltimore, with nine launch markets planned for 2009. Comcast offers two pricing options for the new "up to 4Mbps" wireless broadband service:
• Comcast High-Speed 2go Nationwide service costs $69.99 ($92.95 thereafter) and also comes with Comcast 12Mbps home broadband service and a home Wi-Fi router. The service uses a dual-mode data card that allows users to float between Clearwire's Mobile WiMax network and Sprint's 3G EVDO network. Comcast tells us existing double and triple play customers can add Mobile WiMax service on to their current bundles for $30 more a month. Comcast of course invested roughly a billion dollars into the Sprint and Clearwire joint venture -- and is buying bandwidth wholesale from the new operator. Comcast also tells us they finished deploying DOCSIS 3.0 technology in the San Francisco market, giving all Bay Area customers access to the fast 22/5Mbps ($62.95) and 50/10Mbps ($99 per month) speeds. Just last week Comcast announced that with their deployment in Philadelphia, they'd now brought faster DOCSIS 3.0 speeds to 50% of their network footprint. The carrier says they'll reach 65% of their footprint by the end of this year, with all Comcast customers having access to the faster speeds by the end of 2010. |
