Insider: Time Warner DOCSIS 3.0 Hits Upstate NY Soon
Buffalo to see service in mid-November, Syracuse in December

Time Warner Cable and Verizon have already begun their next-generation broadband battle in New York City, where Time Warner Cable last month finally announced availability of faster 50 Mbps service (you can see new customer thoughts in our forums) for $99, albeit to a limited city footprint. Verizon has promised New York City they'll have the entire city wired by 2014, so Time Warner Cable had a little time to kill -- as Verizon techs cover the city with smaller ONTs and bendable fiber in hand.

In upstate New York, many markets are considerably more rural, less affluent and therefore see less competition. Cities like Binghamton, Utica and Watertown likely aren't on anybody's next-gen upgrade radar. Bigger cities like Syracuse this week are only this week starting to see FiOS TV, Verizon announcing the availability of FiOS TV to 50,000 homes in various Syracuse neighborhoods (those interested can check out the press release or watch Verizon play reporter, interviewing themselves on how awesome they are).

You can expect the battle to heat up further between Time Warner Cable and Verizon over the next few months. Time Warner Cable insiders tell Broadband Reports the cable company plans to launch faster DOCSIS 3.0 service in Buffalo in mid-November, Syracuse in December, and Albany in January. Interestingly omitted (at least from these earlier launch markets) is Rochester, New York -- where the local incumbent phone operator is Frontier, and there's no Verizon FiOS.

Time Warner

Time Warner Cable ignores one fact.
It will still be the same crappy Timer Warner Cable service, no matter the manner of delivery.
Until Time Warner changes their customer experience, they are a dying company.

And Rochester? ..... Never because all they compete with is DSL - no FIOS here.

So Doc.3 for LA in 2016?

I can't even imagine when TWC will get around to upgrading their LA market. I imagine is not really at the top of their "to do" list since competition here in non existent.

TWC

So far the only company I know of that did a software "upgrade" and actually downloaded an inferior product into all their customers cable TV boxes. Mystro. Sound dropping out. bluring of images, constant freezing. The biggest insult is when they attempt to raise cable prices this year as they always do. I suspect the calls to Consumer Complaints will set a new record. Everyone I know is awaiting Verizon FIOS. Imagine having to unplug your cable box on a regular basis to reboot the system. That's what it's like now trying to watch television....2009 and I am rebooting my box like I had to on my Windows 95 PC.

Hell i thought it was just me. That DVR reboots almost nightly and when trying to watch a recorded show sometimes it crashes a couple times before it gets going.

DOCSIS 3.0 in Buffalo

Well, this would certainly be nice to a lot of people. FiOS is in Buffalo and Time Warner has lost quite a few people from FiOS.

Not to worry, DOCSIS 3.0 is only available if you're willing to put up $99. Lower Tiers stays with 1.1. hehehehe

Re: TWC

I've had Mystro on my HDDVR for 2 years now and don't have any issues like that at all, at least not constantly.

I probably have to reboot it once every 3 months or more. But definitely nothing to freak out about. I can't imagine Verizon has a totally bug free set top box. Do you think they do?

Me Too...
I knew it was a problem when everyone on my street is complaining about the same issue, but when you call Time Warner, They tell you that you are the only one complaining...
"No problems here..must be your TV, Wiring, Etc"
Right!!!
Now the majority of my street is on DirectTV or Dish.
Now no more problems.
Wonder why ?

That is about the results I had before Mystro. Since then nothing but problems even tried swapping the unit out. It worked for about a week or so then same problems.

Hell, Rochester can't even get better upload out of this company. We are still at 384 kbps for standard service and 1 meg for Turbo. Would be awfully nice if Verizon were to take over Frontier, but that ain't about to happen.

Hello, U-verse!

With upload speeds no faster than 1.5 Mpbs, downstream no faster than 18 Mbps (for now), and my second TV failing to tune into a HDTV station if the livingroom TV has one on, and the DVR is recording another....

The 2 HD streams + 2 SD streams has got to be the weakest link in U-Verse. Although in some areas they can now do 3 HD streams and 3 SD streams, you can't have the 18 Mpbs at the same time, or so I am told.

Although I have my own pet peeves about Time Warner, U-Verse is way to limited, and pretty much has already hit the ceiling of that particular technology.

FIOS is the better competition, but Verizon only operates in about half the SoCal territory.

Hey, hey, hey, hey. I'm in Ogdensburg an hour up north.

Sad thing is I'm closer to the capital of another nation than I am the nearest Best Buy or *decent* mall in NY.

$65 for 18Mb down and painfully slow 1.5 upload...no thanks. I'll stick with 15 down n 2up but at least I pay $10 dollars less.

Hmm, so are they including the Middletown and Slate Hill area's by chance in that time frame? -_-

I second that. I'm in Goshen, NY and I'm currently on the Turbo plan which is 15/768 here. I could make some pretty legal use of that upload and due to the latest job I could probably afford shelling out some extra dough for it. :)

I am in Goshen too. TWC recently turned on Switched Digital Video with the conversion of the set top boxes from passport to navigator and added a few HD channels. With the extra bandwidth SDV can create I'm thinking we will see more goodies in the next 4 months or so.

I don't really know what kind of speeds they offer in DC, but here in SoCal Turbo package in most areas is 15Mb-2Mb. Other areas where they're still upgrading see 10Mb-1Mb for Turbo.

DOCSIS 3.0 in Buffalo....

That would be good to see, but they have to do something better than 50mb down for $99.00.....

I'm not interested in shelling out $99 / month for Internet only.....

Missing The Point

Of course the point is being missed. TW can ramp the speeds up as fast as they want but what they want is caps. What good are speed increases if all it means is it hits the caps faster which means you get to pay more and more faster for exceeding the cap. I could care less about the speed.

As far as the bitching about Watertown thankfully no one knows about it or Henderson Harbor or Sacketts Harbor. The less up here the better.

That doesn't make any sense. It doesn't matter how fast you hit the cap. You would get charged for going over the cap, whether you use it in one week or over a month period. You're not hitting the cap any faster then you would on a slower connection. 40GB cap is 40GB cap. Whether you download 40GB at 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps makes no difference. It's the data size not speed.
