Michael Bay 'Awesomely' Blows Stuff Up For Verizon
Telco ramps up advertising, Time Warner Cable picks a fight...

Verizon has tapped Transformers director Michael Bay for a new suite of ads that should start showing up this weekend. Jam-packed with explosions and use of the word "awesome," Verizon writes us to note that the advertisements are already available here. The ad is first of several that will include higher profile personalities as the carrier continues to deploy their FTTH service.

"Michael Bay is a larger-than-life figure because he"s a powerful game-changer," said John Wimsatt, senior vice president of marketing for Verizon Telecom. "Verizon FiOS is the best and first choice for home entertainment because the power of our fiber-optic network delivers the best picture quality, fastest Internet and most-innovative interactive services."
In response, cable providers like Time Warner Cable have been pushing their own new ads that take a shot at the telco's bubbly enthusiasm for fiber. Verizon responds to the new Time Warner Cable ads over at their policy blog.

Optimus Prime?

What's that?

Reactionary Response

Verizon has already won in making fiber look like "a good thing."

Comcast does the same thing here. Their ads explain how your TV, voice and data all go through Comcast's "enhanced fiber optic network."

Cable lies

I love the Cable ad. Especially when they say they have their entire network on fiber. Gee, last time I looked my neighborhood have coax drop lines to every home.

Verizon is obviously on to something that is making cable companies a little nervous.

If Ma Bell completely merge back together, I would hope it is Verizon's technology leadership that is implemented and not AT&T's.

Downloaded the Ad - Why Distribute Via Skinney Pipe?

I've got FiOS, and I just tried to download the video (instead of streaming it). I filled out the brief form (no problem), and commenced the download. Why provide the file on a server/pipe that shows obvious bandwidth limitations? My transfer topped out at about 1 MB/sec. Not a smart method of distribution. IMHO.

Yeah, he's a game changer

I don't see how rehashing 80s cartoons into CGI-driven movies makes anyone a game changer, any more so than taking the name Knight Rider and changing everything else about it makes it new & fresh. It takes zero talent to redo what has already been done. The design of today's "retro" vehicles shows that too - no imagination, just regurgitation of what was new 30 years ago. One look at abomination that was called the Dukes of Hazzard movie is enough proof of how bad it is.

This guy can plan his entire career just by watching the Boomerang Network during the day. It won't be long until we see live-action Jabberjaw starring today's hottest comedians. They've already warned us CGI-animated Smurfs are coming, not to mention a sad take on the neglected Thundercats franchise. Need we remind Hollywood that nobody has done an A-Team movie yet? They could use a cast of unknowns, tie in the marketing with a GM SUV, and it's make millions.

Michael Bay is a disgrace to my avatar -- which I've used for far longer than the latest movie's craze.

Re: Yeah, he's a game changer

He is not stupid though. He observes that the majority of movie go-ers have no taste, imagination, or desire to think; then he devises a movie making model to encourage them to throw as much money at him as is humanly possible.

Or maybe Im being too optimistic and he just happens to *be* one of those movie go-ers that stepped onto the other side of the camera :D

Dude, where have you been? Hollywood loves to recycle stuff.

I Am Legend = The Omega Man

All the Marvel Comics characters are coming back to life.

Even Indiana Jones is coming out with another movie.

Yep. What a pathetic, mis-leading ad by TWC. Talk about playing on the ignorance of the average user.

Re: Yeah, he's a game changer

I think the movie industry in recent years is at the lowest point of all time. Rambo 7; Rocky 15; Mission Impossible 3; Die Hard whatever number; terrible Supermans; Batman. Is there a new Terminator coming? Im sure there will be soon.

I get excited over about three movies a year these days. And I end up at least mildly let down by one or two.

Terminator 4 is coming (with Christian Bale as John Connor) and an A-Team movie to boot.

Re: When you are doing something right, haters come out!

I just watched the TWC ad. ROFLMAO!!!! That is a sham. Yeah, they have been using fiber for years but not to your home. Last time I used a Road Runner internet connection (in Jan 2008), it was coaxial to the home. I prefer FTTH and not CTTH.

Dumb

Hmm, I recall Michael Bay professing how HD-DVD will be the ultimate delivery for movies, yet somehow Blu-Ray is winning out.

A movie-director is a bad choice for a role model. Matter of fact ANYONE from Hollywood is a bad choice. Well, except for James Earl Jones...that voice is perfect (for an empire).

Re: Can't get it

Yeah, it would be awesome.

If Verizon would get off their collective asses and string some fiber.

Two years ago, my town signed a franchise agreement with Verizon. Half the town is wired, the other half isn't.

It's bullshit. I see half the ghettos of Wilmington set up for Fios, and I can't get Fios surrounded by half million dollar houses.

I say Verizon is redlining us on time bill paying, nice home owning people.

Blatant discrimination....

Re: Cable lies

What the cable companies have is a miniature version of Vzn'z backbone (fiber). But they don't have fiber to the house nor do each customer get their own strand. Theirs is still a shared network and Vzn's is not. When Comcast or any other cable co puts a fiber drop in your house then they can claim they have a fiber network. LEC's have had fiber backbones for thirty years. Who's playing catch-up?
Fact is Vzn'z bandwidth can't be touch, their voice is superior and as soon as they build up their channel lineup some more (which they have plenty of bandwidth to do so) then cable co's will be going by way of MediaCom. But hey maybe they should've left "voice" to LEC's and everything would be as it was.
Au revoir cable co's....finally!

"Advanced Fiber Optic Network"

Time Warner says the same thing in their commercials as well and all I see here on Time Warner Roadrunner connections in this area is loads of lag. I have Verizon and I believe that even though Verizon is giving people insane speeds compared to the rest of the big ISPs in the US, my DSL has never slowed down one bit, and pings have always been low. This may not be a super accurate thing to do, but it seems as though Verizon has the better network, so yeah.

Though I haven't seen any Transformers commercials yet, I have been seeing LOADS of Verizon ads trying to load up (Firefox's adblock anyone?) advertising both FiOS and DSL saying that I just got that new computer and that I should switch to the network that the computer wants, and yet, according to that ad I already have it lol.

So is the fiber

640mbps of shared bandwidth

irsean @ 19th Feb 11:11AM:
Re: Cable lies

There's a difference between "shared" bandwidth and "segmented" bandwidth. Other users will not "take" bandwidth from another on fiber. Cable users will.
I.e.:
Cable: More users means a slow down of connectivity.
Fiber: More users means....nothing.
