Additional confirmation on Qwest's new VDSL2 effort...

The past few weeks have seen a flood of rumors that Qwest is about to migrate from ADSL2+ to VDSL2, which should allow the carrier to offer faster speeds to select customers with shorter loop lengths. While Qwest's current fastest ADSL2+ speed tops out at 20Mbps/896kbps, the new VDSL2 services will top out at around 40Mbps downstream and 20Mbps upstream. We've been running down some leads and have been able to confirm with several insiders that the project is underway.

"It will start with new VDSL2 remote terminals," says one Qwest insider who's familiar with the project. "Using a platform similar to one currently in use for FTTN -- which has been strictly RT-based -- as opposed to a card upgrade." According to the insider, you can expect the same approach with central-office (CO) based systems. "FTTN has traditionally been offered only from RTs," says the source. "But that is going to change."

On the official level, Qwest spokesperson Monica Martinez wouldn't confirm or deny a new product launch. "Qwest recently said that we were planning to trial infrastructure designed to deliver higher speeds through our FTTN build this year," says Martinez. "We are doing that, and as part of that process, VDSL2 is being evaluated in the lab and in the field," she says. "Beyond that, we have no additional details to share."

According to sources, the prices for the new services range from 12Mbps/5Mbps for $51.99 per month, to a new "Ultimate" tier at 40Mbps/20Mbps for $109.99 per month. Supporting a looming launch is the fact that Qwest's website already makes reference to the new Ultimate tier. Sources believe these prices may be accurate (plus $10 if not bundled with a Qwest landline), though as usual with pre-release information -- the prices could change:
Platinum+ 7Mbps/5Mbps - $41.99
Titanium+ 12Mbps/5Mbps -$51.99
Quantum+ 20Mbps/5Mbps - $64.99
Ultimate 40Mbps/5Mbps - $99.99
Ultimate+ 40Mbps/20Mbps - $109.99
The news, which is sure to make upgrade-resistent stock jocks like Craig Moffett cry, is a positive one -- given Qwest isn't in a great position to effectively compete with faster DOCSIS 3.0 cable speeds using ADSL2+. Indications are from multiple sources that the initial deployment of these faster speeds will be very limited in scope, centered largely around metro areas, starting in or around Denver later this month.

FTTN only offered from RT's

Fiber To The Neighborhood or Node

The RT IS the Node.

FTTN refers to the connection from the CO to the RT(Node) so when the local area around the CO is served there is no Fiber To The Anything, because that area is being serviced directly from the CO and not an RT.

Let's hope...

I'm in Parker, just south and east of Denver, and I still can't get the higher ADSL speeds. I'm at 7x896 which works great for $40 a month but I'd love higher upload speeds. If I could even get the 7x5 I'd be thrilled.

Qwest, if you're listening, light up your RT near Jordan and Main in Parker and I'll sign up now! Please, I need upload speeds and this would fit the bill.

This is good news.....

I like the fact that they are not trying to offer IPTV. They're just going to focus on the current product and offer a better version of it. I think that is what a lot of companies (AT&T) should do. Instead of trying to be everything all in one. Just focus on improving what you already sell and make it so that more will want to sign up for it.

Re: Let's hope...

I'm on Comcast because Qwest only does 5/896 at my location. I have friends who can get 7/896, but many choose Comcast because it's faster.

I'd switch in a heartbeat however if Qwest had VDSL2 in my area. Would probably jump for the 12/5 package...above about 15 Mbps it's just gravy and I cre more about upload speeds than smoking downloads. As long as I can watch HD video streams (my 8 Mbps Comcast does this just fine) I'm good.

Looking at those speeds, Makes me want to FF to the end of the year. as my cable provider is unleashing DOCSIS 3 and I'm surrounded by Qwest but in my particular town is another phone company but alas Mediacom should match Qwest for speeds.

This could be the upgrade I've been waiting for!

I've been a Qwest ADSL customer for 7 years on an RDSLAM that was upgraded last year to FTTN. The service has been reliable and the support has been responsive when occasionally needed.

I've ignored the recent ADSL2+ offers since I have no interest in subscribing to a service that reduces the upload speed when compared to my grandfathered 1.5MB/1.0MB ADSL service.

If the new VDSL2 plans are offered in my area and the TOS still allows similar unrestricted use (e.g. servers, inbound connections, VPNs, 3rd party VoIP) then I'll be calling to upgrade to the 7MB/5MB VDSL2 service as soon as it's available.

Re: FTTN only offered from RT's

I think they just made up a bunch of stuff to make it sound more technical.
Some carriers are running VDSL2 from the ONT in large apartment buildings and calling that FTTH even though in actuality it's FTTN

It would be nice if they rolled this out to the people stuck with the older 1.5MBps service, but I suspect backhaul is the greater problem.

I completely agree. It seems useless to waste money on a third or fourth best TV offering. The market is already saturated with satellite and cable. IPTV would not garner many subs, but the cost outlay would be tremendous.

Exactly. Even though a bundle package is a nice cost saver, I'm more concerned with better HSI and telephone service. Stick to what you do best and just focus on making it better.

A node is a node whether it's in the CO or a remote; there's little difference between a DSLAM in a CO and an RT. FTTN (as in Fiber to the Node) refers to how it's fed- by fiber instead of coax or copper.

40/20? Dsl got no game...

40/20 should be Entry level (and 100% deployable across the footprint) for DSL in 2009.
However, this is Qwest we're talking about, nevermind.

Re: 40/20? Dsl got no game...

Uh, the only copper so far that supports those types of speeds is VDSL/VDSL2, which need nodes every 3k feet for that kind of speed.

ADSL2+ maxes out at 24/3.5 or 24/1 depending on which equipment is used.

Personally, 40/20 are pretty good speeds; FiOS tops out at 5020.

VDSL requires a new DSL modem/router as well so factor that in.

This is not fiber
This is copper based technology that is gonna give you faster download but same upload as ADSL
who cares about upload right?
100/1 is awesome :)
1000/1 is even better
/sarcasm
I doubt most surewest user are going to see anything faster then what their currently have now... its a last attempt to keep dsl technology above water
fiber is the future not copper based on inferior technology
by the time i have 50mbps in a year or two most ppl would be happy that they are surfing at 12/2 on comcast or att, rr, cox with similar speed

@rr.com good luck with your speed upgrade and your usage cap coming to a town near you

Re: Legacy Replacement

I concur. And for some reason, almost everyone around me can get the higher speeds but my little chunk of the Urbandale area. There are upgraded boxes everywhere I look but here, and every time I check the system I'm still stuck at 1.5. Until then, I stay with Mediacom. 10/1 beats 500/896 (which is the last train speed I have on record).

By that definition, 768kbitps ADSL, even 128kbitps ISDN, will be FTTN if its fed from a fiber RT.

You can rationalize the IPTV as being free with the VDSL Internet offering. The IPTV costs are a few AAA servers and the programing costs, and loans for the set top boxes.

Too Little, Too Late

It's a step in the right direction, there's no doubt about it.

But, they are just now releasing that? And even then, only a small number of customers will actually be able to get it?

So they may be having money problems. But what they really should do is roll out as much FTTH as possible, and offer FIOS like speeds. I'm not saying Verizon is a perfectly wonderful company, but in that respect, they are doing things right.

If Qwest rolled out FTTH, then in the areas they do, I sincerely believe that they would snap up customers very quickly.

So I don't live in a Qwest area, but I feel bad for anyone who does.

so..

I Moved into the Apt I am in early last april & When I moved in my Choices were a 3mb down ?? up from CableOne (who throttles & Caps) or a 1.5mb down & 1mb up from Qwest.. Needsless to say I Took qwest & it worked, But was unimpressive.. Within about 3 weeks after moving though the roll out of the FTTN happened & I not have 20mb available.. I For one am psyched to see faster uploads coming & I Will probably only change from the Titanium to the titanium+ or at most the quantum+.. But one thing I Can tell you for sure whatever its gonna be it will have the+ at the end..

As far as I am concearned Both ISP's here are crap.. Neither know what an upload is (cableone now offers a 10 down 1 up, but its still capped) so to see the posibility of anything with a better upload is awesome news.. Also I heard some hearsay that boise will be rolling out with the VDSL soon as well (CO techs are being trained)..
