Surfside Beach passes SC's first smoking ban at the beach
(old news - 08:00AM Sunday Jul 29 2007)
SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (AP) - South Carolina will get its first smoke-free beach come October.

Surfside Beach Town Council passed a smoking ban Tuesday that includes a ban on lighting up at the Horry County town's four miles of beach.

Councilwoman Judy Tuttle originally proposed an indoor smoking ban in public buildings, similar to bans passed by several other local governments in the state. But she says residents wanted the beach smoking ban too.

Get a life!

Whoever penned this one needs to be the target of a drive-by re-'butt'-al. And I don't even smoke. What is this place, one of those towns that started out as an HA? Truly truly sad.

It's becoming more common, I'm afraid

...The beach is a open area, that is well ventilated, even if someone was smoking at the beach you won't even smell it because it will blow away with the beach breeze quite rapidly.

I can understand in restaurants and buses, but the beach...that's just wrong and I am not even a smoker.

This is good, many areas in CA are smoke free, all public buildings are, as well as a certain distance around their doors. I wish they'd make tobacco a controlled substance and prosecute the tobacco execs as the murderers and liars they are, the pain, misery and cost in dollars to society that they cause is astronomical. In case you are thinking I'm just this way because I'm from California, well, yes, that does have some to do with it, but being a devout Mormon has much to do with it as well.

Edit-You think it doesn't affect you, a non-smoker? Look at Christopher Reeves' wife, she died of lung cancer, and she'd never touched a cigarette in her life. It was second hand smoke that took her life, if that's not a reason to keep smoke away from us healthy people, I don't know what is. You want to kill yourself on purpose? Fine, but don't bring me down with you. I am thankful NOBODY in my family (immediate and extended) smoke, some have in the past, but quit long ago. Many are Mormon, some are not.

Did the mortician state her cause of death as second hand tobacco smoke? Seems that there were many possible factors that could have been the cause of her cancer. Not that I'm a tobacco shill, but your statement does leap over tall buildings in a single bound.
