Bill submitted to Congress to revamp USF

Some good things in there. But a lot of bad too. Better if they just killed it off altogether. The bill would also start collecting USF fees on VOIP & Wireless providers too.

»news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20091106/pl_···congress
U.S. lawmakers said on Friday they introduced a measure aimed at overhauling an annual fund intended to ensure nationwide telephone service in high-cost, rural areas by including money for high-speed Internet use.

The bill, introduced by U.S. Representatives Rick Boucher, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet, and Lee Terry, a Nebraska Republican, would establish a competitive bidding process and cap the fund.

Rural carriers such as CenturyTel Inc's Embarq and United States Cellular Corp have said funding should stay based on actual costs and said a cap would discourage investment and jeopardize coverage in hard-to-serve areas.

The bill would broaden the base of who pays into the fund to include companies that provide Internet calling services over wireless, cable and satellite networks, as well as the traditional telephone companies and local exchange service providers.

The bill, called the Universal Service Reform Act of 2009, would also direct the FCC, with the help of a federal-state joint board, to set policies including methodologies to determine access to the fund.

AT&T and Verizon lauded the measure, saying it also puts an end to traffic pumping, which is when third-party companies route adult chat and "free" conference calls through rural exchanges in order to generate fees.

Droid launched today; not an iPhone 1st day; but good for VZ

»news.cnet.com/8301-30686_3-10392128-266.html
Verizon Wireless spokesman David Samberg said he felt confident that Verizon would be able to meet customer demand for the new Droid in New York City. The 34th Street store alone had at least 500 Droids as well as some HTC Android Eris phones, and Samberg said he expects anyone wanting to buy a Droid on Friday in New York City will be able to get one.

"Five hundred phones is a lot of phones to sell in one day," he said.

Gabrielle Dahms admitted she had also been tempted to get the iPhone. But she had heard terrible things about AT&T's network and was leery about making the switch. Instead, she decided to wait for the Droid.

"It has all the features I like on the iPhone," she said. "Plus it has a real keyboard, which sold me."

We've decided to drop AT&T (and the iPhone) and go back to Verizon as a Christmas present to ourselves. My daughter and I will get Droids and my GF will get whatever, probably a cheapie. I agree with the girl they interviewed, the Droid has everything I need plus a real keyboard but most of all, it's not on AT&T's network.

Korea fears backlash from kimchi dispute

Worsening news on the Korean front:
»large.stanford.edu/history/kaist···ina/koo/

China halted exports of kimchi after the health authorities in South Korea said on Oct. 21 that they had found the parasite eggs in batches of the food from China. In response, the Beijing authorities on Tuesday arrested seven brands of Korean kimchi imports after they were found contaminated with parasites, Xinhua reported.

The Chinese ambassador, Ning Fukui, voiced his "concerns" over the matter on Oct. 25 while visiting Minister of Finance and Economy Han Duck Soo for the first time since taking up his Seoul posting the previous month.

I will not get an iPhone while it's on AT&T. I can't.

I'm due for a Verizon phone upgrade in a few months (April I think), and I'm going to check out this Droid thing then.

(I don't get that crazy about phones and super duper stuff, but I do get nuts when the phone doesn't make or hold phone calls properly.)

My wife has AT&T and she loves it. My Mom and Brother are recent iPhone converts (from Verizon) and they love it. Must be the area, but I say why mess with a good thing.

I'll be off every Friday starting today until the end of January. I'm looking forward to that :uhh:.

On a positive note, I went to the VZ store and played with the Droid for a few minutes (which is not a whole lot), but I noticed the feedback is almost instantaneous. I'm currently using the Krave and am beginning to hate it. Sometimes when I'm texting the damn thing locks up. On occasion when I touch on a menu item or something, it doesn't initiate immediately, I have to hit it a second time.

Well I have held, used and played with the iPhone and have an iPod Touch so I am familiar with that product line.

I now need to leech off a friend and play with the Droid. One of the guys who got one today is a software developer and he is really excited about it.
After I have had a chance to use the Droid I will render my opinion however the physical keyboard is VERY tempting.
It its product life cycle, the iPhone will eventually get to be old hat and be in a decline phase.
Good question but a tough one.

Also from playing with the screens on the iPod Touch, the iPhone is not as "nifty" as it used to be in this child's mind...

The answer to this one is very easy. Do you have to have the App Store? Aside from the App Store, the Droid has the iPhone beat in many respects; expandable memory, twice the screen resolution at a higher dpi, qwerty keyboard, adobe flash support, can run background apps, better battery life, and a 5mp camera. Here's the official spec list: »www.motorola.com/Consumers/US-EN···S-EN.alt

Most people scoff and say not being able to background apps isn't a big deal (I was one of them), until I realized that if I'm doing ANYTHING and want to answer a txt or respond to an email, you have to close your app, respond, re-open your program. This is brutal for apps like Slacker Radio because you lose the song that was playing. And unless you Jailbreak, no backgrounding of any music app except the iPod, period.

don't think I have to have the App store. Frankly, I don't know. As I said, I'd like a nice "smart phone", but I hate phones in general. Which is why I've always gotten the el-cheapo (or close to it) from Verizon. All of my calls always go through, and never a problem. Yeah, I can't pinpoint the closest toilet in an emergency like some iPhone users, but whatever. Every time my brother is down to my place he shows me something cool on his iPhone. He showed me live video streaming of his apartment in Rhode Island (laptop webcam) on his iPhone as we sat in a restaurant on Long Island. I thought that was pretty damn cool, but would I use it?

I have an iPod Touch that I don't use nearly as much as I should, as when I'm in the car I listen to Sirius. When I was on my honeymoon, I regained an appreciation for the iTouch, and most recently, started buying an app or two for it.

With that said, I don't necessarily want my phone being my all in one device. I need my phone to make and receive phone calls properly nearly 100% of the time with regularity.

I think the most logical thing for me to do at this point is to wait it out and see about this Droid thing, and upgrade in February when I'm due. I can keep my iPod touch for all the apps and music, and let me phone be a phone.

A lot of the things the iPhone can do, you can do with any phone that has a decent browser, especially with flash support. That webcam "app" he showed you was nothing more than a run of the mill webcam server running on his PC and a pretty "app" interface wrapped around it. You can do that right now with just about any mobile phone on the market. :) I won't deny that some of the apps do make things a lot easier that doing the same task via the web however. The caveat is, if it's one you find yourself using a lot, there will probably be an Android version of it before too long.

My GF loves her iPhone, but when we sat down and thought about it, she realized that aside from a few simple games, she never uses data via 3G, so like you, she just wants an el cheapo phone and will use her iPhone as an iPod Touch via WiFi.

Ha ha, I don't think this will be the end of the iPhone, as there are people who really don't have trouble with AT&T and absolutely love their iPhone. I think you'll see a sharp sales decrease after the Droid has been out for a year or two however as people get sick of AT&T's network problems and realize the limitations of the iPhone platform.

Of course, Apple could have a phone that destroys the Droid just waiting in the wings. AAPL is in my IRA portfolio for that very reason, the sneaky bastids. :)

See that's what I don't realize, because I don't pay too much attention to the phone stuff. 90% because I dislike talking on the phone, so I dismiss the "fancy stuff" right away. Good to know that it's not exclusive to the iPhone.

I think I'm due for my first "smart phone", and looks like the Droid may be it. Not because I need it, but if I'm upgrading my phone anyway w/ Verizon, and I want to stay on Verizon, I might as well try and keep up with whats out there. I know I can't go to AT&T, so like you said, stick to my iTouch w/ Wifi and go from there. (I also want to stick w/ Verizon because when Fios comes here, I want to get the discount since I have V cell service.)

This is the plan. If they can collect USF fees on VOIP, Wireless, or other Internet based communications, they they can prop up the old Telco model forever. Basically, even if you're rendered obsolete and eclipsed, you still will be funded by taxes on your competitors.

Telcos will be all behind this. Cable and the like will come out against, methinks.

Listen up Dinks! Begin Hating Glenn Beck in 5...4...3...2..

I've mentioned elsewhere that I've listened to Beck since his first day as a local drivetime host in Tampa. His message hasn't substantively varied since that time.

He's been nationally syndicated since about Oct 2001, on cable TV since about May 2006.

He hasn't said anything more outrageous in the last year, than he did in the previous 10. Yet the Beck hatred appeared across all corners of the Leftist universe nearly instantaneously, a bit over a year ago. With some research, I could probably pick out the date.

No new message from him, no new delivery vehicle. But we have a new and sudden level of Leftist animosity toward Beck. Someone turned on the Hate Generator and it led the way.

Talk about hitting a political nerve, huh? Looks like someone made a decision that their hatred of Beck needed to be lots of other people's hatred of Beck.

And so it was.

Now one thing that may have helped it along, was that Bush was going to become less available, lots of folks needed to get their Hate-Fix elsewhere.

Replacing that was going to be tough. Bush Hatred was something prized and nurtured by the Left. They had most of a decade to cultivate it. Most of Pop Culture encouraged development and most of Big Media supported them in pushing disdain to ever deeper levels.

What could substitute for an emotional hook that was so carefully crafted? What could the Media and Leftist power brokers use to manipulate their personalized proletariat with the same fevered results that Bush Hatred produced?

In short answer, nothing. Bush Hatred was years in it's construction. With the nearly all of popular media in lock-step in thinking and message, Bush Haters could tactically be directed in mass.

The election of Barack O'Bama was an example. A vanishingly small percentage of O'Bama voters could elucidate ANY meaningfully positive qualifications of the man. That same group could universally parrot the anti-Bush messages that were spoon fed to them for years.

It is to remember that Hate is an addictive drug. People who are denied it are in danger of becoming free of it. What to do? Hatred has yielded some very desirable results for the Left; are they to just let it slip away?

Insert Glenn Beck into the equation. He isn't enough by himself to substitute for Bush. With Bush being President, the Left could blame Hurricanes on Bush and the Bush Haters would curse Bush for Hurricanes.

So Beck isn't the whole solution, but he can be an important part of it. So, all at once anti-Beck messages spring forth from all points of the Leftist Continuum. And Bush Haters have found a safe haven for a portion of their grinding animosity.

But, there will need to be more receptacles of Leftist Hatred. Rush isn't holding as much Leftist Hatred as he used to and using just commentators probably isn't a good strategy anyway.

Sarah Palin isn't quite visible enough for Those-Who-Are-Controlled to Hate effectively, though they will if they are instructed by the Media to do so.

So someone else is needed. I'm not sure which names are being batted around. But eventually a choice will be made and Millions of Americans will, all at once, have their Hatred Rekindled and Invested in someone whose behavior isn't any different than it was a year ago.

It occurs to me that Hatred is a way to tax the emotionally underdeveloped. Media and PACs alike reap billions from the manipulation that Leftist Hatred provides.

I should start a pool on who the next victim will be. Seems like there's a few bucks to be made by me as well.

Now, in place of evidence to the contrary, Leftists will begin Pointing Fingers at the Right. This is to redirect attention from the point of my post, instead of offering any substantive countering evidence.

Or maybe they'll just try not draw any attention to it, and hope no one notices it.

Telcos will be all behind this. Cable and the like will come out against, methinks.
Telcos like it because it caps taxes on their systems and spreads the costs to all their untaxed competitors. Why wouldn't they like it.

But I still think they should just kill off the USF altogether.

He hasn't said anything more outrageous in the last year, than he did in the previous 10. Yet the Beck hatred appeared across all corners of the Leftist universe nearly instantaneously, a bit over a year ago.
From my perspective, Beck criticism grew commensurate with the seeming popularity of his message.

As you note, he's been around awhile, and nothing's changed in his comedic performance. But, "a bit over a year ago" the Hard Right (teabaggers, birthers, truthers, purgers within their own party) grew into a louder (and perhaps more numerous) force. Beck epitomizes that brand of conservativism.

The fact that he always did isn't the point. It's simply because what he epitomizes has become the dominant brand of extremist rightist conservativism that we hear about today. Naturally he would receive more attention.

BTW: Will Glenn Beck ever deny the growing rumors that he raped and murdered a young girl? Does he have something to hide? I don't think he does, but the silence is deafening.

You have illustrated the point perfectly. Lacking any substantive response, you pass along fabricated lies to discredit Beck. Do you not see why people are starting to realize the rabid left has no credibility?

If you read the link, it's a parody of Beck's style of "news" analysis.

Which gets back to "Noah's" claim that the Left just suddenly decided to hate Beck. Beck's style of "news" analysis has never changed. The only difference (from my perspective) is that that style is popular among a growing (in loudness or numbers) group of extreme conservatives (teabaggers, birthers, truthers, and those who want to purge the Republican party of moderates). They go for Beck's comedic commentary like it's serious. Thus, the greater emphasis on him.

BTW: Why won't Glenn Beck deny the rumors that he raped and murdered a young girl in 1990? I'm not saying the rumors are true, but why does he remain silent when it would be so easy for Glenn Beck to set the record straight by denying that he raped and murdered a young girl in 1990? I doubt that he did it. And, even if he did, I'm sure he's paid his debt to society. But, there are credible sources who say the rumor is true, that Glenn Beck raped and murdered a young girl in 1990. And, it's a fact that 82% of Americans polled believe Glenn Beck raped and murdered a young girl in 1990.

That sounds about right. And it illustrates how condemnation of Beck's message has nothing to do with Beck's message.

Notice that it's condemnation of Beck's message, not refutation of the message.

As Bush Hatred became less sustainable,
the Left News Media,
Left Social Media,
Left Popular Media
and Leftist power brokers
took a look at what Conservative audiences were paying attention to.

That's where the efforts to transplant Bush Hatred were focused.

The attacks on Beck are one mechanism to replant and nurture the waning Bush Hatred.

The openly fabricated Beck rape story is one avenue of attack.

The equally fabricated accusation behind it, that Beck fully invents his editorials, is another.

Nobody has "fabricated a story" (rolling my eyes, throwing my hands wildly around my head) that Glenn Beck raped and murdered a girl in 1990.

Quite the contrary (smug look). Evidence has been presented that Glenn Beck raped and murdered a girl in 1990.

In fact, a growing number of people have questioned if it could be true that Glenn Beck raped and murdered a girl in 1990, and how Mr. Beck himself has refused to deny that he did it. (Serious look, hands neatly folded.).

I for one, have said numerous times that I don't believe he did it. Or, if he did, there may have been extenuating circumstances which could explain why Glenn Beck raped and murdered a girl in 1990. (Feigned look of pleading and sincerity).

But, there is no denying that 82% of polled Americans said they believe the allegations could be true, that Glenn Beck raped and murdered a young girl in 1990. (Lower lip pushed out, nodding my head up and down.).

What better way to put this very real story to bed, than for Mr. Beck to come out and address it openly and honestly? To clearly deny that Glenn Beck raped and murdered a young girl in 1990. Isn't Mr. Beck acting just as a guilty person would act? (Eyes bulging, hands extended, palms up, shrugging shoulders.).

I can only hope that we will eventually know the truth, and that his supporters won't silence those of us who are merely asking, whether Glenn Beck raped and murdered a young girl in 1990. Justice deserves nothing less. (Head cocked sideways, the hint of a wink.).

(It's just not as much fun when Beck gets a dose of his own medicine, is it?).

According to Isaac Eiland-Hall, the creator of the site, it was a fabricated story.

said by Issac Eiland-Hall :

Dear Mr. Beck,...My Criticism of you has been amply made--I had my lawyer fight this battle only to help preserve the First Amendment... it is safe, at least from you (for the time being)
Writes Mr. Eiland-Hall in a self important letter where he applauds himself for single-handedly saving the First Amendment.

Mr. Eiland-Hall condemns Beck for observing First Amendment privileges in a manner not pleasing to Mr. Eiland-Hall. This after he creates and publishes a fantasy child rape and murder and goes as far as the law will allow to tie it to Beck.

(A good friend of mine just had a preteen girl raped and murdered that they were close to. I imagine Mr. Eiland-Hall wouldn't mind spending some quality time with her family so they could properly appreciate his style of communication.)

It's not too difficult to locate site after site where Isaac Eiland-Hall shares his disdain for Bush. Once Bush was became a less efficient container for his contempt he transferred it to Glenn Beck. The site was created as a purposefully fraudulent effort to spread his own hatred.

That hatred might help explain Mr. Eiland-Hall using child rape and child murder as a communication device, without any regard to families who have undergone such a brutal tragedy.

I'm sorry to hear that the site doesn't fail your standards for credibility, even though the author openly admits it was a fabrication.

Could it be that he's been cowed into submission by Fox News? (Palms flat down on the table, arms straight, eyes wide open, shaking my head sarcastically.).

Let the record show that a search of Lexus Nexus produces not a single statement from Glen Beck, denying reports that Glenn Beck raped and murdered a young girl in 1990. (Squinting my eyes, throwing my hands in the air.).

Even more damning, a Google search does not disprove the allegation that Glenn Beck raped and murdered a young girl in 1990. (Holding my head in my hands, shaking it back and forth.).

I have no knowledge of any plausible alibi Glenn Beck has that would prove he didn’t rape and murder that girl in 1990. (Juvenile look of shock.).

You'll note that Glenn Beck is trying to draw attention away from himself a LOT lately. He's been claiming that everyone from John Rockefeller to everyone in the Obama Administration is a puppet of ACORN/Hitler/Karl Marx. Why is Beck trying to draw the spotlight off of himself and onto others? What is he hiding? That's just the kind of behavior -- textbook behavior, in fact -- that you would expect from a man who raped and murdered a young girl in 1990, which is something Beck has refused to deny ever doing. (Throwing my hands wildly around, with a feigned angry scowl.).

What, indeed, does Glenn Beck have to hide? Why hasn't he spoken out and set the record straight? (Eyes rolling).

Why is the MSM not reporting that Glenn Beck might have raped and murdered a girl in 1990? Are they covering for his rape and murder of that girl? (Looking wildly offstage, to the left and right.).

Of course, I'm not saying Glenn Beck raped and murdered a young girl in 1990. In fact, he may have murdered her first, then raped her. Or, as I have suggested many times, he may be entirely innocent despite his silence.

(It's not as much fun when Glenn Beck's tactics are used against him, is it?).

Probably the most entertaining legal briefs I've ever read. And perfectly illustrative of Beck's hypocrisy and the manner in which the gb1990.net site is a vehicle for hoisting Beck on his own petard, as it were:

quote:
A poignant example of Beck using the Gottfried Technique is this Glenn
Beck interview with Congressman Keith Ellison, a Muslim. Beck famously
said:
"No offense and I know Muslims, I like Muslims, I've been to
mosques, I really don't think Islam is a religion of evil. I think it's
being hijacked, quite frankly. With that being said, you are a
Democrat. You are saying let's cut and run. And I have to tell
you, I have been nervous about this interview because what I
feel like saying is, sir, prove to me that you are not working
with our enemies. And I know you're not. I'm not accusing you
of being an enemy. But that's the way I feel, and I think a lot
of Americans will feel that way."
