Wikileaks German Domain Suspended
As countries react poorly to leaked blacklists...
(old news - 11:50AM Monday Apr 13 2009)
tags: business · Politics · world · content
As a growing number of countries and ISPs attempt to filter the Internet of all its naughty bits, whistle-blowing and document sharing website Wikileaks has been ruining their party by posting a list of all the filtered URLs. Last month that resulted in German authorities raiding the home of the owner of the "wikileaks.de" domain. This month, German authorities managed to get Germany's registration authority DENIC to suspend the domain without notice, according to an alert posted to Wikileaks:
The action comes two weeks after the house of the German WikiLeaks domain sponsor, Theodor Reppe, was searched by German authorities. Police documentation shows that the March 24, 2009 raid was triggered by WikiLeaks' publication of Australia's proposed secret internet censorship list. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) told Australian journalists that they did not request the intervention of the German government.
The leaked blacklists show that in addition to child pornography and child "modeling" websites, the filters block legitimate and legal pornography sites -- as well as poker, euthanasia and abortion websites. In contrast, reports in the German Press have DENIC denying the government was involved, and arguing that the Wikileaks German domain owner screwed up.

There have been several attempts to purge Wikileaks from the Internets. Last year, Swiss bank Julius Baer managed to convince a California Judge to temporarily yank the Wikileaks domain offline for posting internal material exposing the bank for money laundering. Wikileaks certainly made more corporate and government enemies over the weekend by publishing a rough draft of the controversial Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement.

guess the list is for more then kiddie porn

because otherwise why try and keep it a secret, rather then use it a trophy of "hey we blocked and know the domains known for trafficking this stuff, and will also try and take actions against the owners".

How long?

The Internet, being the mostly free medium that it is, will simply migrate the information to another site. So what if you can get Wikileaks.de shut down, how are you going to manage that in a country with less stringent censorship laws? It only takes one site that is not censored to render this entire discussion meaningless.

Yep. The reason they want the list secret is so people won't know when they slip things onto the list that shouldn't be there---- websites critical of the Government or exposing powerful corporations; websites of political activists, etc etc

Ultimately what we're going to see is countries that don't sign to the censorship of the Internet being booted from the net all together, but the beauty of the net is that it is what we make it.

While we can all pretty much agree that things like child porn should be blocked, there is very little else that the majority of us would agree needs to be blocked. No mater what we decided needs to be blocked, the list of what is being blocked should ALWAYS be a matter of public record. Doing it in any other manner is begging for an abuse of power.

The list is Public i can't copy the list on Legal grounds which would get you in Trouble and the MODS here would delete that list in a heartbeat.

The list its Virus sites and kiddie porn which has no value.

Other than(and until) the wikileak article, where was the blacklist published? Post a link to the blacklist that was up before the wikileak article. The list at wikileaks lists a lot of sites that are not virus or kiddie porn related.

As far as the legal problems, several links to wikileaks have already been posted (in the larger thread), so the mods apparently have no issue with links to the material.

While I do not agree with the content on this page from the blacklist, show me where it has anything to do with child porn or virus software:

All of those links were to wikileaks. IF wikileaks had not posted it, we would not know that non kiddie porn, non virus sites (like the one I posted above) were on the list. When you have a "secret" list you can put whatever you want on it.

Can you give a good reason why the link I gave above should be blacklisted? It is not kiddie porn. It is not virus related. So why is it black listed?

What German laws did he break?

None.

Yet they still raided his house.

That is lawsuit material.

It is good we have people like this guy around.

Freedom of Information is a good thing in this day and age, where the powers that be still try to censor everything, and still try to dictate what we think and how we feel.

Then post a link to one that was posted BEFORE wikileaks did. I really doubt you will find one.

The point is that they were trying to keep it secret.

I agree with and have no issue with blocking kiddie porn. The problem is that if the list is not kept public they can put ANYTHING on their that they want. The link that I posted is just one (of many) sites on that list that were blocked for reasons other than kiddie porn.

"Or any other site that's at risk to their Government." This is an EXTREMELY dangerous statement. Basically this leads to the government being able to shut up anyone that criticizes the government. One name for such a condition would be tyranny.
