Zer01 Mobile: $70 Unlimited Voice, SMS Data Sort of, MVNOs need to offer it -- and nobody knows if it works... 12:16PM Monday Jul 06 2009 by Karl Bode tags: prices · competition · business · alternatives · bandwidth · networking · consumers · wireless
A new carrier by the name of Zer01 Mobile went live last week, offering unlimited voice and data on smart phones for $69.95/month, without a contract. The catch? The service is using a VoIP application to route all calls, and you can only get the service once an MVNO starts offering it. The Zero1 service tunnels over GSM networks, but the the carrier has their own IP network -- and is using interconnect (roaming) agreements to make calls. Technically, that makes Zer01 a mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE). "We are the first mobile service to offer consumers a true national unlimited voice, data and Internet plan without any contracts or commitments that is priced affordably at only $69.95 per month with taxes and fees included," crows Zer01 Mobile CEO Ben Piilani. "We have licensed patent pending proprietary technology that allows each smart phone user to make voice calls or transmit data efficiently by bypassing carrier circuit-switched channels by sending voice communications through a VoIP system and onto a virtual private network that accesses the Internet," explains the CEO. The company goes on to claim they've got some kind of QOS software mojo to help deal with jitter, latency, or say -- being stuck on a poky EDGE connection. Additional details aren't being divulged. Whether that actually works won't be seen until customers can actually get their hands on it, and until that happens -- it's wise to remain skeptical. So far they've announced no MVNO partners, though they insist that there are announcements forthcoming. We asked AT&T what they thought about the idea (since it's their network they'll primarily be riding on), and were told "we cant comment on the business models of other carriers." If metropcs already offers smartphone capability for $50 dollars a month, what makes them different? is it nationwide capability?

kapil @ 6th Jul 11:51AM:
Interesting...
I'd like to see this in action. In particular, I'd like to see how they're dealing with latency and jitter if the voice is being packetized and sent over IP.
My guess is that it's vaporware. Or at the very least they're a little ahead of their time and don't have everything nailed down quite yet.
Either way...this sort of thing has a lot of potential on the carrier end of things rather than the customer facing side.
If providers could just run a mobile data network and pipe voice over it along with all other data apps then that's a much preferred way of doing things rather than running a separate voice network like all the mobile providers currently do.

UTGI is corporate parent - around since 2003
Sounds like the company driving this is UTGI, which acts like a consulting company in various industries, including communications.

And their previous involvement in communications doesn't sound very promising - it was in Broadband Over Power Line(BPL) support.

Checking on web sites and for news finds an organization with little info available. I wouldn't hold my breath on how many MVNO's will sign up for their services, if any.
One of their previous VOIP attempts:

Also this story indicates this is being run as a Multi-Level-Marketing (MLM) scheme. Check out the comments:

This service will be nationwide, right now one of the distribution channels, are ordering different kinds of smart phones,
with technology embedded into the handset.
About August 2 forms of products will be available
one will be the Sim card, that will be able to
work on unlocked phones, running Windows mobile six or above.
shortly after, you can use android, or other O/S
Or by six different models between $200 and $600
depending on what features you want.
The company found a way to tunnel through AT&T data network
by signing interconnecting contracts with them,
I also believe T-Mobile is part of the interconnecting contracts
but have not been able to verify this yet.
The bandwidth on the data network which is 99.9%
IP will have speeds starting at the EDGE technology
at about 300 to 500 kilobits per second nationwide.
In the area where there 3G it should be around 10 gigabits
or even 20 gigabits per second

I fear that word is going to be "NFW" from Apple after Verizon can't resist the temptation to start demanding that the device be wounded -- as every other lousy phone I've had from Verizon.
Seriously, I would love to see it, and given Verizon's awesome network, it would be ideal. But Verizon is a control freak.

"MVNO (like Boost Mobile or MetroPCS)"
Neither of those networks use GSM, MetroPCS has their own towers so they aren't a MVNO. Boost probably is technically but they are owned by Sprint and use the Sprint iden network.

VOIP Over EDGE? Puhleeze.
Once, awhile back I looked into VOIP over Mobile Internet.
Using G.711 u-law, 1GB of data transfer would give you just over 1,600 minutes of talking. So caps aren't an issue if it's strictly voice.
However, the latency is killer. From what I recall, latency is far too high to use VOIP, and that's on EDGE. With 3G or EVDO Rev. A, maybe the latency would be low enough. But, most areas don't have 3G or EVDO Rev. A. Some areas don't even have EDGE. I've been in areas where GPRS was all that was available.
OK, so maybe if the phone has sufficient processing power, some compression may be able to take place to reduce the amount of data transfer rate that's needed. But nothing can be done about latency short of upgrading the network. And somehow, I don't see 3G coming out to Dinkyville, WY pop. 200.
So nationwide coverage with VOIP on a mobile phone, with the current infrastructure, is impossible.

The problem I find with prepaid unlimited plans
Is your always being charged for things you don't know
why, or how it if you try to do a three-way conference call
they can terminate your service, their data network
is only unlimited for their network like peer-to-peer
With Zer01 it's truly unlimited, multiple callers, broadband Internet
videoconferencing, IP TV, download movies two hours long
in three minutes, you can transfer two DVD players
or your computer hard drives, these wireless blue tooth
or built-in Wi-fi and watch it on your television
There really isn't any comparison I'm using a prepaid
AT&T and I keep burning through my minutes
$.10 for this, $.20 for that, $.40 a can't account for
Just a lot of B.S.

Doing voice over our current pokey packet switched wireless networks won't work very well.. just imagine voice over EDGE.. should be pretty awful if it works at all. Which leaves you with an 'unlimited' data plan for $70/month.. but that sounds hardly revolutionary.

I use Skype over Alltel's EVDO Rev 0 network all the time. The only time it drops, of course, is when I drive from one system into another and my mobile IP changes, which is understandable. Skype automatically relinks to Skype, but you must recall your party.
I've used Skype on 1XATT data circuits. It's fine as long as nothing else, like email downloading, tries to share, which makes it skip, of course, as we run out of data.
Skype has worked for years over Alltel EVDO with great success. It DOES work much better if you USB tether your netbook/laptop to the modemphone, rather than use the balky Bluetooth DUN, especially in areas of high bluetooth usage by earphones, etc. Bluetooth drops thruput to half or less....

Being a bit of an expert on the topic...
Kyocera K126c and LG 300c are CDMA, on Verizon generally though if you look at Tracfone's coverage footprint it might be different depending on your area. The image filename usually has an SID in it...look up the SID and that's your home carrier.
All other phones currently sold (the nice ones) are GSM, on AT&T unless they don't have local numbers/service in your area.
If you want to order online and make sure you get an AT&T GSM phone, change your Tracfone store URL to read GSM4 if it say, for example, COGSM, CO or GSM5.
Hope this helps.
